SEPTEMBER 2017

Most important issue as I write this, is the upcoming meeting in Cocoa Beach at the International Palms and Resort, 15 – 17 September. Rooms are still available, but I must have you dinner choices not later than Sept 11. The hotel needs to order the food. So, let’s get those checks in the mail.

Tom “Doc” Norwood has offered to take any willing participants on boat rides in the Intercoastal waterway, on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Let us know your intention.

We will have elections for Chapter officers at the meeting. It will be a voice vote as there is only one person running for each office. Installation will be at the December meeting.

John Erskine is the President of the Texas A&M club in The Villages. The club is collecting donations to assist with hurricane Harvey rescue efforts. If you would like to donate to this cause, send your checks to John Erskine, 17620 SE 86th Briarcliffe Ct, The Villages, FL 32162. Make the check payable to the Salvation Army and notate it is for Hurricane Harvey Relief.

For those of you who have not heard, we lost our Brother Chris Billingsley on August 3, 2017. A memorial service was held on August 13 and was attended by many. Rest in Peace Chris, you will be missed. Ginny and her daughter will be at the September meeting.

We will have a special event at the meeting. As you know, we are planning on starting an Educational Grant. Phil Devon has spent many hours looking into how to go about setting up this endeavor. To fund this grant, I will be selling Wine. See the sample label. The Varieties and quantities available are: Chardonnay (32), Cabernet Sauvignon (14), Pinot Noir (5), Zinfandel (9), and Sauvignon Blanc (6). There will be sign up sheets at the meeting and the wines will be distributed at the Christmas meeting, just in time for the holidays. If you cannot be at the meeting in September, but plan on being at the Christmas meeting, let me know what you want and I will sign you up. As I cannot mail the wine, this is restricted to those coming to the meeting. The wine was donated to the chapter. As this is a fund raiser, the price will be set at $30 per bottle.

If you haven’t heard, Speedy Gaspard broke his leg in early August and unfortunately, won’t be at the meeting. Speedy, we hope you are mending and we look forward to seeing you in December.Mauri Price has notified me he will not be at the meeting either. He has suffered a heart attack. Was in the hospital for five days and is now home resting. Mauri, take it easy and get better. Hope to see you soon.

Please keep Natalie Vines in your thoughts and prayers. She and her husband, Brian have been in Atlanta, GA since April while she receives treatment from the Shepherd Center for her Traumatic Brain Injury. She will be discharged on 14 September and they both look forward to returning home to Florida.

HEALTH & WELFARE

1. Al and Toni Boman - Toni is now receiving physical therapy from a top notch facility and she says that in only a few treatments they have her walking (with walker) and beginning to use her left arm/hand quite a bit. She is very happy to receive this type of therapy and looks forward to each session. Way to go Toni, hang in there and it will work out great for you.

2. John Foley - John says he is doing well for the circumstances and that he is still able to move around and make some medical appointments.

3. Dave Soucie - I spoke with Dave: he is now receiving chemotherapy for Lymphoma. He hada large mass strangulating his aorta, kidneys, and other organs. They treated him with a very large dose of chemo (too large, sent him back to the hospital) and are now determining the proper dosage that he will receive once every 3-4 weeks. He is doing pretty good however the chemo tires him out quite a bit. He goes back in for another treatment on 8 Sep. and told me he will be at the meeting. Glad to hear you are doing better Dave.

4. 'Speedy' Gaspard - Suzie reports that Speedy is now back in a rehab facility and receiving physical therapy to strengthen his broken leg. Speedy, you sure picked an unusual way to celebrate your birthday. Hang in there. We are all pulling for you and hope to see you up and around before long.

5. Sharon Hoagland/Dan Young - Sharon reports that Dan is now in rehab, receiving treatment on his right foot/lower leg. The medics have removed quite a bit of fluid and now giving therapy along with the treatments. Dan, we all wish you the very best of recovery. Sharon still has problems with her stability and takes an unscheduled fall every now and then. Her son is now visiting and helping her. Sharon, we will order a large roll of 'bubble wrap' for you and maybe the landings won't be so bad. Both of you hurry up and get well; we miss you at the meetings.
