Preface This was formerly included in my Jesse Richard Smith book, titled then Jesse Richard Smith and Associated Families. It contained the genealogies of three related families—those of Jesse Richard Smith, Elijah P. Gorman, and John Malone Harrison. I formally severed that book into three books, one for each family, on 30 Jan. 2013.

FIRST GENERATION

1. JOHN MALONE1 HARRISON was born about 1785, Warren Co., Kentucky, married 17 Apr. 1802, Bowling Green, Warren Co., Ken-tucky,[1] PHERIBA CHISM, born 15 May 1787, Warren Co., Kentucky, daughter of John Chism. Pheriba died 10 July 1852, Huntsville, Walker Co., Tex., and was buried in the Huntsville Cem., Walker Co.[2] “Phereby” Chism Harrison’s will was probated “Prob. 5th Apr. 1838,” Dallas Co., Ala.[3] John Malone Harrison died before 2 Feb. 1822, Dallas Co., Ala., when Ewel, Pheriba, and Daniel are listed in Dallas Co., Ala., Orphans Court Book as guardians.[4]

The 1866 state census for Alabama includes “Pherobee” Chism, in Bibb Co., Ala.[5] This does not fit with her supposed death in 1852, nor with a probate of 1838. Something is wrong here. Probably a woman of the same name (after all Pheriba should be Harrison by then).

Pheriba was married a second time to John Tubbs. It is not known if he is the same John Tubbs for whom Elijah Gorman witnessed a deed in South Carolina in 1799.

From the entry for John M. Harrison in the Sons of the Republic of Tex-as:

Various sources cite “Warren County, Ky (Book A Pg. 103) & Sect II Ch 4, Bibb County, AL” for the marriage of John and Pheriba Harrison. Presumably the FamilySearch record comes from the first of these. 2. WFT, volume 5, tree 2416; WFT, volume 12, tree 1679. 3. WFT, volume 12, tree 1679, cites “Will Probate Dallas County, Ala. John M. Harrison, my great-grandfather, was born in Alabama, Sept. 17, 1822, to Ewel S. Harrison and wife Artemecy Gorman, who were mar-ried Sept. 11, 1820, in Perry County Alabama. His grandparents were #1 John M. Harrison and Phebery [sic] Chism, married in Warren County, Kentucky, in 1802. Phebery; [sic] Harrison Tubbs died in Texas 1853, and is at rest in Huntsville Cemetery where Gen. Sam Houston is bur-ied.[6]

The Chisum family would appear, some say, to be an old one, going back several generations to William Cheesome born about 1631 in Lan-caster Co., Virginia. One source claims a part of this lineage to be as fol-lows: Phoebe Chisum was daughter to John Chisum III born about 1732, St. Margaret’s Parish, Caroline Co., Virginia, died before 1789 White Co., Tennessee, married (1) (—) Gaines, married (2) about 1772 Margaret Chisum, born about 1750, Elizabeth City Co., Virginia, daugh-ter of William and Deborah (Cook) Chisum. Phoebe was one of ten children. John Chisum III was son of John Chisum II, born about 1704, died 9 Oct. 1792, Amelia Co., Virginia, married about 1730 Ellender Gillentine. John III was one of 13 children.[7] Unfortunately, it appears that John Chisum III’s daughter Phoebe was born about 1783 and died before 24 Nov. 1792. Therefore Pheriba Chism/Chisum born 1787 could not be this Phoebe, and the old Chisum lineage has to be doubted for the family treated here.

Children of John Malone and Pheriba (Chism) Harrison:[8]

THE JOHN MALONE HARRISON FAMILY

SECOND GENERATION

4. EWEL SEXTON2 HARRISON (1John Malone1) was born 1790–1800, died before 1847, was married 12 Sept. 1820, Perry Co., Ala.[17] ARTE-MECY GORMAN, born about 1800,[18] South Carolina, daughter of Eli-jah P. and Mary (—) Gorman. See my companion book to this one on the Gorman family, for details.[19]

On 28 Dec. 1828 Ewel S. Harrison witnessed a deed of Elijah Gor-man of Perry Co., Ala., selling for $280 to Robert Iverson 160 acres of land in Perry Co.[20]

In 1830 Ewell S. Harrison, 30–40 appears in the 1830 census for Dal-las Co., Ala., with one woman 20–30, one boy and two girls under 5, and one boy 5–10.[21] This implies there was another daughter who died young.

There are three Alabama land records, one dated 20 Mar. 1837 and two 5 Aug. 1837, listing Ewel S. Harrison as patentee.[22] Ewel S. Harri-son is recorded in a deed record as the recipient of a note from Amos

Elliot and Nancy, his wife, 31 Dec. 1840, Shelby Co., Ala., next to Tal-ladega Co.[23]

In 1840 Ewel S. Harrison, 40–50, and his family containing one woman 30–40, and nine children, resided in Talladega Co., Ala. There were two boys and one girl under 5, one girl 5–10, two boys and one girl 10–15, and one boy and one girl 15–20.[24]

“By 1847 Artemecy Gorman Harrison is buying and selling property in Texas usually with John Malone Harrison.” So Ewel must have died before this. “The story is that John M. went home to get the Family. Ew-el became sick on the way. They spent one year around what is now Madisonville [Madison Co., Tex.], time for one crop.”[25] This is con-sistent with another story that has Ewel and Artemecy crossing the Red River in 1845.[26] In 1847 Artemecy Harrison and John Malone Harrison are listed together on the Walker Co., Tex,. tax records: Artmecy Harri-son, 320 acres of the original Whitley land grant valued at $320, no poll tax; John M. Harrison, 320 acres of the original Whitley grant, poll tax $1. In 1847, the following three are listed together on the Walker Co. tax records: Mary Harrison, 50 acres of the original Stette land grant,

Harrison, WFT, volume 24, tree 1095, quotes from extensive notes. Another family story relat-ed here has, “John Malone Harrison returned to Alabama to bring his parents to Texas. They re-turned after the Civil War and crossed the Mississippi River on horseback and wagon and when they reached the Brazos River, they settled down and planted corn. However, his father and another brother took sick and died with malaria and were buried on the Brazos River bottom.” Madisonville is not on the Brazos, however. 26. Mary McKenzie Moore, Harrison/Alabama to Texas 1845, posting 10 Jan. 1999, GenForum.Genealogy.com, “Ewel S. Harrison b. 1803 m. Artemacy Gorman Sept 1820 in Perry Cy Ala. The[y] crossed the Red River in 1845 settled near current Madison Cy Texas. Ewel dies[.] Wid-ow goes on to Washington Cy where they miss 1850 census. value $100; J. M. Harrison, 100 acres of the Whitley grant, value $200; and Artimecy Harrison, 320 acres of the Whitley grant, value $320.[27]

Artemecy Harrison and J. M. Harrison on 31 May 1848 received full payment of $320 for an 8-year-old Negro boy named George, from C. Harrison.[28]

A. M. Harrison purchased 320 acres in Walker Co., Tex., from John C. Harrison for $320. The deed was signed 31 Mar. 1847 and recorded 5 May 1847. A notary public apparently wrote Artemcia M. Harrison on it, 11 Dec. 1848. Artemecy Harrison sold this 320 acres to Isaiah Vick for $335, deed filed 22 Feb. 1854, Walker Co., Tex.[29]

Artemecy Harrison purchased 100 acres from Pleasant and Amanda Wimverly (or Wilverly) for $100, deed signed 28 Mar. 1848 and record-ed 13 Apr. 1850, Brenham, Washington Co., Tex.[30] She deeded this 100 acres to O’Bryan and Wright for $700, signing on 30 Nov. 1852 “in the presence of J. R. Smith (her son-in-law) in the State of Texas, Wash-ington County. Filed for record Jan 9, 1853.” Artemecy Gorman Harri-son “is not on the census by 1860. She moves to Bexar County and Me-dina County where she is again buying and selling property with John M. and Jessie Smith.”[31]

of Alabama, his place of residence was Atascosa County, Texas, and that he had been in Texas 22 years. His brother James C. Harrison signed also, and their father-in-law, James Jolly, stated that he was a native of South Carolina, had been in Texas 28 years and in Atascosa County, Texas for 13 years.[46]

John Malone Harrison enlisted 6 Sept. 1849 in Capt. McCown’s company of the Texas Mounted Rangers, serving in the Indian Wars, and was discharged 13 Mar. 1850. In his pension declaration of 9 Aug. 1902, he states that he lived in Washington Co., Tex. and got his mail at Brenham. He said that he road horseback in 1849 to Huntsville, Texas, to sign up with Capt. McCown. He was 27 at enlistment, 5 feet 10 inch-es tall, gray eyes, black hair, fair complexion, born in Talladega Co., Ala., had resided in Atascosa Co., Tex., for 52 years, and married Marian Jol-ly.[47] [48]

In 1860 “Jno” M. In 1870 J. M. Harrison 47, a farmer born in Alabama with $74 in real and $1,000 in personal estate, resided in Pleasanton, Atascosa Co., with Marian 33, born Missouri, James C., 10, Benton, 4, Ewell S., 3, Atta-delle, 6/12, all born in Texas, and James C., 38, a stockraiser born in Alabama, who was probably John’s brother, James Clinton Harrison.[50]

Possibly it was this John Harrison who partook in a cattle drive of 100 two-year-old steers to Abilene, Kansas, in 1878.[51]

In 1880 John “S.” Harrison, 57, a farmer born in Alabama with fa-ther born in Tennessee and mother in Kentucky, resided in Atascosa Co., Tex., with his wife, Marian N., 43, born in “Misuria,” children James, 20, John B., 14, Ewel S., 12, Axidella, 10, “Wm” R., 8, Thomas D., 6, Vaughan M., 4, Walter S., 3, and Ora Ann, 2/12 Apr, all nine born in Texas, and brother, James C., 49, a stock raiser born in Ala-bama.[52] This family is listed next to that of Hugh L. Harrison, another brother of John’s. The nativities of John’s parents do not appear to be correct, nor his middle initial.

In 1900 John M. Harrison, 77, born Sept. 1822 in Alabama of par-ents of unknown nativities, resided in Atascosa Co., Tex., with his wife of 42 years, Marian “M.,” 62, born Dec. 1837 in Missouri of parents of unknown natitivites, and with his sons, Thomas D., 26, born Jan. 1874, and Vaughn M., 24, born July 1875, daughter, Ora A., 20, born Mar. 1880, and son, Robert H., 16, born Dec. 1883, all four born in Texas. Marian had had 14 children, with 10 surviving.[53]

The “old home place” for John Malone Harrison was in the Verdi Community, Atascosas Co. The probate appraisal made 26 Dec. 1906 valued it at $3600.[54]

THE JOHN MALONE HARRISON FAMILY

In 1910 Marian Harrison, 72, a widow born in Missouri of Tennessee natives, resided in Atascosa Co., Tex., with her daughter, Ora, 30, a sin-gle woman born in Texas of a father born in Tennessee and a mother in “Masura,” and her granddaughter, “Hellen” Harrison, 6, born in Texas of Texas natives. Marian had had 14 children, with 10 surviving.[55] Hel-en was probably the daughter of Vaughn Mill Harrison by his first wife, Julia Mathis, who died in 1905 after which he remarried and had a sec-ond family.

In 1920 Marian Harrison, 82, a widow born in Missouri of Tennessee natives, resided in Atascosa Co., Tex., with her daughter, Ora A., 39, a single woman born in Texas with father born in Kentucky and mother in Missouri, and her (Ora’s) niece, Helen Harrison, 16, born in Texas of Texas natives. THE JOHN MALONE HARRISON FAMILY

was born about 1827,[62] Alabama, who was living in Texas, age 20, and married to Elijah Harrison in 1852 (see appendix A deposition). Martha had married earlier — Reynolds [Runnals]. She died 22 Feb. 1864, as pre-viously mentioned.[63] See my companion book to this one on the Gorman family, for details on Martha.[64]

Elijah Harrison 24, born in Alabama, resided in 1850 in Grimes Co., Tex., with Martha 23, born in Alabama, and daughter Parlee 8/12, born in Texas.[65] Parlee must be the same child as Justina, so perhaps her name is Justina Paralee.

In 1860, E. B. Harrison 33, a stockraiser native to Alabama with $500 and $1,700 real and personal estate valuations, resided in Pleasanton, Atascosa Co., Tex., with Martha 33, born Alabama, Justina 10, Melissa E. 9, Mary A. 6, Laura 3, and James A. 9/12, all born in Texas. Next door is James Harrison, probably brother James Clinton Harrison 27, living with the Jesse and Elizabeth (Harrison) Smith family.[66]

Children:[67]

40 i CHRISTINA [CALLISTA] JUSTINA PARALEE4 HARRISON, born 3 Oct. 1849, Texas, married 28 Feb. 1867, Atascosa Co., Tex.,[68] JAMES E. PETTY, born about 1844, Arkansas, and had at least six children, assuming the following census information is about the correct family.[69]

62. Martha’s birthdate estimate here matches the following Texas census data but slightly mis-matches the 1832 estimate of Gorman family researchers. Nevertheless, this does appear to be the same Martha. 63. Email from Evelyn D. (Harrison) Pugh, 28 June 2002, “Re: Harrision, Chism, Smith, Gor-man.” 64. Smith, Elijah P. Gorman Family. 65. In 1880, James E. Petty 36, born in Arkansas with father born in Tennessee and mother born in Alabama, resided in Atascosa Co., Tex., with Christina 31, born in Texas with both parents born in Mississippi (which contradicts other evidence), Elizabeth J.5 1[1?], Wm B.5 12, Calodonia5 7, James E.5 4, Elijah J.5 2, Guy W.5 5/12, all born in Texas, James Harrison 19, born in Texas with father born in Mississippi and mother born in Missouri, probably Christina’s brother (although his parents’ nativities don’t match hers or other evidence), and J. K. Dale 50, born in Texas.[70]

They moved to Pomona, California, and took her younger brother James with them, which matches the census information.[71]

41 ii MELISSA ELIZABETH4 HARRISON, born 21 July 1851, Texas, married WILLIAM WESLEY COUGHRAN, and had children Luther5, Edward5, Lillian5, Elmer5, and Stella5 Coughran.[72]

Malisa Harrison 18, and Laura Harrison 13, both born in Texas, orphaned by their parents, live in 1870 in Pleasanton, Atascosa Co., Tex., with the precinct constable [J. E. Petty?] 27, born in Arkansas, [Fynie?] 23, William B. 3, and Elizabeth 1, all born in Texas.[73] This might be the James E. Petty mentioned above who perhaps married Melissa’s sister Justina, but the census record is difficult to read exactly (it might say T. E. Petty, or even T. C. Jolly). The two children William B. and Elizabeth match, but the woman [Fynie?] is a problem.

kansas, with daughter Harriet Armesa Tumlinson, born 30 Dec. 1858, Atascosa Co., Tex. This would perhaps explain the “Justenia Tomlinson and her husband” in the published list of heirs of Elijah Gorman, in the Macon Beacon, 1857 (see Smith, Elijah P. Gorman Family). However, the 1870 census for Atascosa Co. gives A. T. Tumlinson’s wife as Cynthia J. 34, born Mississippi, implying her birth about 1836. Furthermore, the daughter Harriet was born in 1858 when Justina Harrison was only about 8 years old. 70. U.S. census, 1880, Atascosa Co., Tex., r. 1289, p. 303, ED 3, dw. 54, fam. 54. 71. KNOX POLK DUPREE.. They had children Thomas5, Martha5, Effie5, Arthur5, Mary Lou5, Alice5, and Alphra Earl5 Dupree.[75]

Minnie Harrison 17, born in Texas, is probably orphan Mary, living in 1870 in Pleasanton, Atascosa Co., in the home of Marshall [Nickle?] 30, a grocer born in Alabama, Sallie 15, born in Illinois, James Bowyer 30, grocer (retired), born Virginia, and Georgiana Love 11, born Texas.[76] Minnie thus lives next to the Johnson family where here sister Caledona resided and two doors from her uncle Hugh Lawson Harrison and his family.

43 iv LAURA4 HARRISON, born about 1857, Texas, married —

KEISTER.[77] As mentioned above, orphan Laura Harrison, 13, lives with the

Jolly family in Pleasanton, Texas, in 1870. 44 v JAMES A.4 HARRISON, born about 1859, Texas.

As mentioned previously, in 1870, J. A. Harrison, 10, born in Texas, orphaned by his parents, lives with the Jesse Richard and Elizabeth (Harrison) Smith family.[78] This is probably the James Harrison, 19, living with James E. and Christina (Harrison?) Petty, already mentioned.[79] See my companion book to this one on the Smith family, for details.[80]

45 vi CALEDONA [CALLA DONNA]4 HARRISON, born about 1862, Texas,[81] married SOLON HENDERSON, and had children William5, Robert5, and Mina5 Henderson.

Caledona Harrison 8, born in Texas, resided with W J. Johnson, 37, a saddler born in Alabama, and Margaret W. Johnson, 24, born in Tennessee.[82]

26 July 1860, Atascosa Co.,[88] ELIZABETH MINERVA JOLLY, born 29 May 1839, Missouri, daughter of James and Margaret (Renfro) Jolly,[89] and sister of Marion Nivel (Jolly) Harrison, wife of John Malone3 Harri-son. Elizabeth died 24 Mar. 1924, Bexar Co., Tex.[90]

As already mentioned, H. L. Harrison 24, born Alabama, resided with his brother Jno. M. Harrison and family in the 1860 census of Pleasantown, Atascosa Co., Tex.[91]

In 1870 H. L. Harrison, 34, Justice of the Peace born in Alabama, re-al estate $250 and personal estate $1,000, resided in Pleasanton, Atasco-sa Co., Tex., with Eliza M., 30, born Missouri, Elizabeth, 8, and Mary L., 3, both born Texas.[92]

In 1880 Hugh L. Harrison, 44, a farmer born in Alabama with father born in Tennessee and mother born in Kentucky, resided in Atascosa Co., with his wife, Eliza M., 40, born in “Mosuri,” daughters, Elizabeth, 18, and Mary L., 13, born in Texas, and son, Charles H., 4, born in Tex-as. With them were the family of Andrew McMains, 63, born in Ken-tucky, his wife, Caroline, 36, born in Kentucky, daughters, Rebecca, 21, and Amanda, 18, born in Texas, also with the Harrisons were stepsons, Henry McKney, 19, and Wm J. Importantly, daughter Eliza, born about 1839, Missouri, is listed in 1850 and 1860. There is a problem with the 1860 listing, however, since the enumeration date was 2 Aug. 1860, at which time Eliza should have been married to Hugh. 90. Ellen had had two children, both surviving, but Abb. C. was probably John’s son from his first wife, since his name is Absolom Clinton. It is not known if Rainbolt is Ellen’s maiden surname. John’s father is listed a native of Tennessee and his mother of Alabama, neither of which matches other information.[105]

In 1910 J. M. Harrison, 73, resided in Spanish Fort, Montague Co., with his second wife of 21 years, N. E., 58. He was born in Alabama with father born in Tennessee and mother in Alabama, again, and she was born in Texas of Alabama native parents.[106]

Elizabeth G. Blythe Sworn to and subscribed before me this 6th day of Oct. AD 1852 Elisha [Dismukes] [seal]. Justice of the Peace

[The date of this document appears to read 1854, with the 4 being very small and written as if it were a superscript. I deduced the year of this docu-ment to be 1852 by the following argument:

There is a petition in the estate papers of Elijah Gorman by petitioners Jesse and Elizabeth G. Blythe, dated 5 Oct. 1852, a photocopy of which was provid-ed to me by Sue Gorman, that contains a list of heirs that matches the list above (except for the omission of either Melissa Uldrick or Martha Harrison—the name is unreadable but her age is 24 which matches neither), given by Eliz-abeth G. Blythe on 6 Oct. 185[]. In particular, the ages are identical. So appar-ently both documents were executed in the same year 1852.]
