HAPPY NEW YEAR! A new year is upon us with a fresh chance to make and reach new goals. When it comes to flying, what goals would you like to conquer this year? Here are some options for you. Pick a goal and make it happen!

• Finish a licence or rating that is in progress. • Complete a night rating, and extend the

available hours that you can fly.• Go for a Seaplane Discovery Flight and

explore a whole new dimension of aviation. • Challenge yourself with an IFR or MIFR

rating.• Join the IMC Round Table.• Sign up at the VFC Mentor board behind

Dispatch and connect with other pilots that will inspire and inform you.

• Fly often enough to stay current.

• If you are not current, make this year the year you get back in the game! Book an annual checkride and brush up on critical skills.

• Get involved. Join the fly-outs, attend the AGM, reserve your tickets to the Wings Banquet on January 27th.

• Make a career plan and set a timeline to keep you on track.

• Buckle down and get that written exam out of the way.

• If it has been a while, book a lesson with your instructor and get back in the seat!

• Tell others about your goals. You may find a partner to join you or help keep you going!

We know that earning your licence and launching a career in aviation are incredible accomplishments. We know that you can do it!

WINGS BANQUET, JANUARY 27Tickets are available for Saturday, January 27, 2018 for the annual Wings Banquet, in celebration of 2017 accomplishments by VFC students and pilots. The Wings Banquet is a long-standing tradition at the Victoria Flying Club. Along with recognizing our graduates, a number of flight training bursaries are awarded (due date, January 15th - see the application on page 13). It is a great opportunity to connect with other VFC members and congratulate students on their successes over 2017! Come for an inspiring and encouraging evening for members and their friends and family.

Join us at the Wardroom (1586 Esquimalt Rd) at 6:00 for cocktails before a delicious dinner and the awards ceremony. Dress is semi-formal. Tickets are $40 and are available to VFC members and guests from the VFC office. PPL and CPL graduates receive one complimentary ticket. Please RSVP by January 15th.

IT ALL STARTED HERE, IN VICTORIA...Do you know what happened on September 8, 1910? William Wallace Gibson put Victoria and Canada in the annals of aviation history with his first successful flight of a Canadian-made airplane! Gibson designed and put together his plane at his home on 146 Clarence Street, with a motor manufactured by local company Hutchinson Bros. & Co. The first flight took place from Lansdowne Field,

and on December 20th, 2017, a Province of British Columbia 'Stop of Interest' sign was unveiled to mark this momentous occasion. Lansdowne Field later became the site of Victoria's first land aerodrome and also the Victoria Aero Club, VFC's progenitor.

We are proud to have such deep roots in our city's growth and entrepreneurial culture!

WAS IT SANTA?Nope, but NAV Canada has had a hand in the rocket launch last Friday that made waves in the media. NAV Canada has been involved in installing and carrying out flight tests of a new satellite-based ADS-B system, expected to replace the terrestrial-based ADS-B system during 2018 onward. SpaceX has been contracted to carry out rocket launches of satellites (Iridium NEXT low earth orbit communication satellites) which carry the ADS-B technology. All this in addition to NAV Canada's radar replacement program at major airports across Canada. Change is afoot for aircraft communications!

Regarding ADS-B, NAV Canada has on their website: "Using ADS-B, we have extended our air traffic surveillance to cover 4 million square kilometres of airspace. This expansion of surveillance coverage will save airline customers an estimated $374 million in fuel costs by 2020

by enabling more fuel efficient routings, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by about 982,000 metric tons." The technology will also have an impact on general aviation.

IFR / IMC ROUND TABLE UPDATESince March 2016, the IFR / IMC Round Table group have been working through simulator scenarios and accident reports together. The goals

VFC's New Standby FeatureVFC has acquired five new airplanes! Well, not quite; however, the Victoria Flying Club has adopted a new procedure that will better enable you to fly more often in the time slot that you want. You can now get on a standby list for aircraft or instructors!

Now, when you book your plane online and the time slot you want to fly in is fully booked, you don't need to give up on that time slot. You can now call Dispatch and ask to be put on a standby list for a particular day and time. This means that if that time slot opens up, we will call you and offer

you the opportunity to fly at that time. To take advantage of this, you will need to answer your phone as soon as we call and arrive on time for your flight. The first person to answer their phone and accept the offer will get the booking.

We continue to make operational improvements to better serve the needs of our members! These initiatives are part of what enable us to have some of the lowest aircraft rental rates in Canada and have great availability. We look forward to seeing you out flying and meeting your 2018 dreams!

The Victoria Flying Club Annual General Meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, March 8th, 2018 in the VFC pilot’s lounge. The meeting will begin, as it always does, at 6:00pm with wine and cheese. The business portion of the evening gets under way at 7:00 pm.

What Happens at the AGM?

As a not-for-profit organization in Canada, the Victoria Flying Club holds the Annual General Meeting to provide an opportunity for discussion and decision making amongst club members. The discussion will include a review of the previous year's results, plans for the current year, and the establishment of the Board of Directors for the upcoming year. The Board of Directors are selected by a process of election.

Who is Eligible to Vote at the AGM?

While attendance at the AGM is open to all members, voting priviliges are extended to those with Sustaining Memberships and Life Memberships only. If you have been a member in good standing of the Victoria Flying Club for 24 consecutive months, then you are eligible to apply to become a Sustaining or Life Member. Sustaining Members and Life Members recieve a discount

on aircraft rentals, fuel, etc. If you have been a member for 24 consecutive months, please pick up a Sustaining Member or Life Member application from the VFC office and plan to attend the AGM.

How Can You Get Involved?

The Board of Directors consists of a group of Victoria Flying Club members who use their collective knowledge and skills to conduct club business on behalf of all members. They are governed by a set of by-laws and make decisions regarding aircraft and equipment, facilities, staffing, and various other areas of club business. Sustaining and Life Members are eligible to be nominated for a director position.

Nomination forms are available at the VFC office and nominations will also be accepted from the floor at the AGM. Directors must be nominated by two other Sustaining or Life Members. Being involved with the VFC Board of Directors is a great opportunity to contribute to the future of the Victoria Flying Club, and to the local aviation community.

of the meetings are to have an open and relaxed forum to discuss and practice instrument flying and to have fun!

For simulator scenarios, pilots are teamed up to use the Redbird to improve their skills. They discuss a specific airport to airport route, emergencies that would be expected, and suggested weather settings. The pilots alternate between the left and right seat; the left seat flies the route as per the scenario, while the right seat acts as ATC, sets weather, and implements the emergency scenario.

Afterwards, they switch seats and repeat the exercise.

When Dr. Seuss penned one of his most famous lines, he may well have been referring to Power Familiarization Flying at 89 (Pacific) Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron.

Much like the Victoria Flying Club’s Discovery Flights, Power Familiarization Flying offers unique opportunities to experience the magic of aviation by taking flight in a Cessna 172 with an experienced pilot. Power Familiarization Flying, though, is exclusive to Air Cadets and is free of charge to the cadet. As you can imagine, the spaces fill up quickly!

Power Familiarization Flying seems to be a lesser known Air Cadet activity, often eclipsed

in marketing presence by the Air Cadet Gliding Program (ACGP). Power Familiarization Flying can also be contrasted to the ACGP in aircraft ownership; ACGP aircraft ownership resides within the Air Cadet Program (the aircraft are owned by each respective Air Cadet League of Canada Provincial Committee, and painted in Air Cadet Colours), whereas aircraft used for Power Familiarization Flying are generally owned by and rented from local aviation organizations such as the Victoria Flying Club.

In order to encourage our cadets to partake in both glider and powered flight at 89 (Pacific) RCACS, we tend to schedule a sizeable chunk of our Power Familiarization Flying in the wintertime (gliding

is scheduled during the early fall and late spring). While this may lead to a higher-than-average flight cancellation rate, it does allow us to capture some stunning photos! Without fail, we are always able to show the cadets some snowy places to highlight interesting meteorological phenomena such as lapse rate (the decrease in temperature associated with increasing in altitude), or the relative warming effect of the sea.

I’ll never forget my first Power Familiarization flight when I was a young 89 (Pacific) Squadron Air Cadet. I even remember the pilot, Luc Arsenault, who is a flight instructor at VFC today! It was a sunny morning and the three of us cadets had arrived well ahead of schedule at the Victoria Flying Club. The plan had been to fly up to Nanaimo and back. Given our 30-odd minutes of extra time, however, Luc got on the phone to see if he could get our routing changed. I was thrilled to learn that we’d get to spend even longer in the air; we were approved to fly up to Qualicum Beach!

The flight was terrific, smooth, and the perfect length. I distinctly remember turning onto final approach for runway 29. We seemed high, but this was in order to clear the trees short of the large gully before the runway. We cleared the gully, and within a few seconds of deploying flaps, our approach resumed a more intuitive feeling angle. A number of seconds later, we gently touched the ground and rolled down the runway, eventually coming to a full stop on the main apron.

Since becoming a Power Familiarization Pilot myself, it has been my goal to create the kind of positive experiences that leave lasting memories in the cadets that I get to fly with. I strive to create the kind of experiences that I got to enjoy when I was a cadet! Over the last few years, I’ve had the pleasure of conducting Power Familiarization Flying with some extraordinarily experienced pilots who have added to our ability to provide positive experiences to our cadets at 89. I’ll never forget the fun times we’ve had flying with Globemaster Captain Sebastien "Sebas" Lemire. (cont. page 9)

It was February 2017, last winter, and Sebastien and I were given some uncharacteristically good weather to fly in. We decided to give the cadets something special — a route that would surely exhilarate even the most seasoned of pilots. We plotted a route that led us northwest along Lake Cowichan, up the central island mountains to Mount Arrowsmith, and down the sloping terrain towards our first stop at Qualicum Beach. Next, we’d take off out of Qualicum and navigate back to Victoria International Airport via the shoreline. It was a master plan, and I was excited to fly a few young cadets along it — a route I’ve never heard of any Power Familiarization Pilots flying before.

Familiarization Flying is an immersive experience, and I like to include the parents as much as possible. When we showed them what route we’d be flying, it quickly became apparent that they were as excited as I was. Without hesitation, we completed our walkaround inspections and took to the skies.

Once we left Victoria’s busy control zone, the atmosphere in the cockpit suddenly became more relaxed and conversational. We checked in quickly on the radio with Sebas, who was in the other aircraft a few miles back from us. The terrain was slowly rising and becoming more snowy. At that point, I began showing the cadets our whereabouts on the VNC. Before long, we were immersed in snowy mountain peaks and rays of sunshine being reflected off of the vast lake waters that flowed beneath us. The cadets had smiles on their faces, and we were only just getting started!

30 degrees angle of bank, we made a turn northward. Arrowsmith’s peak was visible on the horizon, with various other smaller peaks like Moriarty and Hooper. After a scenic few miles of flying northbound, we arrived at our feature destination — Mount Arrowsmith. Arrowsmith’s peaks are dramatic, and their photogenic magnificence is particularly amplified by the position of the sun. The lighting made for fairytale-like westerly photos during the morning, and

elegant easterly photos in the afternoon. In either case, dancing about the snowy peaks thousands of feet in the sky was a feeling that I doubt any of the cadets will soon forget.

After spending 10 or so minutes on our main attraction, it was time for Sebas and I to descend into Qualicum Beach Airport. This was an excellent opportunity to have the cadets participate actively in maintaining visual contact with the other aircraft. It also allowed for highly engaging demonstrations of aerodrome traffic procedures, as well as radio communication. It was always fun to point out: “Hey, that’s Sebas on the radio right now! See him? He’s in that little white airplane in the distance talking right now!”

We rounded up for a bathroom stop, both crews interacting with one another. Unsurprisingly, the consensus of both groups of cadets was the same: everybody enjoyed the first leg of the flight. Unfortunately, we were slightly behind schedule and needed to hurry to make it back on time. This was somewhat accomplished by spending

slightly less time circling downtown Nanaimo and executing a rather prompt passenger seat-swap on the ground in CYCD. Despite our efforts, we arrived back at the Victoria Flying Club about 15 minutes late. It was no trouble though, the bright smiles exchanged between the cadets and their parents allowed Sebas and I to breathe a sigh of relief. It was clear that we had succeeded in delivering the experience that we had intended.

Ever since completing that first Arrowsmith trip, we have tried to follow similar routes in order to continue delivering the same magical experiences. Though the weather doesn’t always cooperate for such a journey, the goal for every Power Familiarization Flight is the still the same. It seems to be working, as our efforts consistently pass the "post-flight smile test." The photos you are seeing are a collection from various fam flights we have conducted over the past year, many of which are from winter flying. We look forward to capturing many amazing snowy photos in our next round of Power Familiarization Flying!

Victoria Flying Club 2017 Income Tax Procedure

Please Note: Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) has recently been requiring proof of enrollment in the Commercial Pilot Program before allowing a deduction for the hours under the Private Pilot Licence. A letter from the Club confirming enrollment in the CPL is available to students actively pursuing a CPL (i.e., a Category 1 Medical, enrollment in Commercial Ground School, working towards a Night Rating or actively completing the dual requirements of the CPL). Members are reminded that all deductions taken are the responsibility of the person claiming the deduction on their tax return.

Instructions: Complete all areas of this form. There is no need to complete the form if you reached the maximum deductible hours per course in 2016. Mail/fax/or drop off this form to Dispatch.

The Butler Flying Award

Claude Butler served as president of the Victoria Flying Club several times over the years. He was a successful businessman, inventor, and a man with many visions. His compassion and generosity knew no bounds. Claude always referred affectionately to his loving wife Jean, who was the Mayor of Central Saanich for several years, as “Her Warship.” He asked “Her Warship,” in his last moments, to do something memorable and worthwhile on his behalf for the Victoria Flying Club and this is how the Butler Flying Award was born.

Betty Wadsworth Scholarship

Betty Wadsworth joined the Victoria Flying Club in 1958 and was active in the support of general aviation all her life. As a director of COPA and a member of such organizations as BC Aviation Council and the Western Canada Aviation Museum of Flight and Transportation, her contributions have been recognized by numerous awards and citations. Betty Wadsworth maintained her connection with the Victoria Flying Club where she learned to fly, and when she died in April 1986 she left a portion of her estate to the Club. Since 1991, the interest from this grant has been awarded each year to further a member’s training, qualifications, or skills at the Victoria Flying Club.

Michael Cooper-Slipper Award

Michael Cooper-Slipper was born in England January 11th 1921 and he joined the AF Squadron 605 equipped with Hurricanes, at the tender age of 17. At 19 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for valour during the Battle of Britain. After the war he joined AVRO Canada and test few the CF-100, CF-102, and Orenda powered F-86. He also flew a modified B-47 as a test bed for the AVRO Arrow Iroquois engine. After his career as a test pilot he embarked on a career in aviation sales, first with de Havilland and then with Field Aviation. Mike is survived by his wife Rita who resides in Victoria.

Brian Smedley Award

Brian began his aviation career as an Aviation Mechanic for the Flying Fireman. This led him to become a pilot for the Flying Fireman followed by the BC Government Air Services. After 24 years with the BC Government, Brian flew for Ainsworth Lumber in 100 Mile House, BC. After retirement from flying, Brian was able to follow his lifelong dream to become a cowboy. He worked for many ranches in the Cariboo his last one being the 112 Mile Ranch.

The December COPA Flight 6 meeting took place at Mary’s Bleue Moon Café. This might become a COPA Flight 6 annual event to kick off the busy festive season and wrap up of the year’s events for our group. It was an evening of camaraderie amongst GA pilots and friends.

Surprisingly, a few in attendance had never been to Mary’s. A total of 16 members, guests and spouses attended the dinner, and as one member commented, we had a better turn out than our Annual General Meeting in November. Another member commented that 'that was because there was no election happening.' Thanks Rob P.

The evening started at 6:15 PM with drinks and general conversation and then into a selection of Mary’s fine dinner offerings. Many stories were recited about this past year's fly-in or fly-out destinations and how many hours everyone logged. Quite a few members in attendance are aircraft owners and

shared stories about their planes and why they fly the types they do. As the evening progressed we were entertained by “The Cliffes” who played a great selection of 60’s & 70’s classic rock tunes. After conversing for over 2.5 hours, festive greetings were exchanged and we disbanded. Thank you to those who were able to join us in what was a fun evening talking about what we all are passionate about, airplanes and flying.

Please note the January COPA Flight 6 meeting will be Tuesday, January 9th. We normally meet the second Tuesday of the month, but being right after New Year’s, it was decided to move a week following. At press time we are still securing a guest speaker and more details will follow. As always you neither need to be a member of the Victoria Flying Club nor COPA Flight 6 to attend. All pilots and aircraft owners are encouraged to attend COPA Flight 6 meetings as we are the voice of General Aviation in Canada.
