EDITORIAL

The International Council for Coordinating Cancer Research

Sponsorship of Cancer Causes and Control (CCC) by the International Council for Cordinating Cancer Research (ICCCR) begins with this issue of the jour- nal. CCC and ICCCR share more than the few letters common to their abbreviations. The goal of ICCCR, summarized on our back cover, is to be "a catalyst in collaboration between cancer research scientists world-wide to accelerate methods for the prevention and control of cancer." ICCCR's activities include increasing the opportunities for scientific exchange through international symposia and workshops, pro- moting international joint research projects, gener- ation of resources for research on cancer prevention, and addressing the impact of global public health policy on cancer research. CCC addresses the same broad goals by rapid publication and dissemination of sound research findings.

The co-founders of ICCCR are Jacques Croze- marie, President of the French Association for Cancer Research (ARC), Villejuif, France and Vincent T. Devita, Jr, MD, Physician-in-Chief, Memorial Sloan- Kettering Cancer Center, New York, USA. Other members of ICCCR's Board of Directors include Richard K. Bernstein, George A. Brakeley Jr, Nancy Brinker, Peter J. Fischinger, MD, PhD, Alice Fordyce, C. Everett Koop, MD, Terry Lierman and Takashi Sugimura, MD. The Directors are supported by an International Scientific Advisory Board of 40 dis-

tinguished physicians and scientists. In 1990, ICCCR established the European Council on Coordinating Cancer Research (ECCCR), under the Presidency of Professor Umberto Veronesi of Milan, Italy to work with the European Community and take advantage of the activities associated with the move towards the integration of European economies and markets by 1992.

Since 1986, ICCCR has co-sponsored six inter- national conferences throughout the world, including the First International Cancer Prevention Conference held in Washington, DC in February 1991, a report on which appeared in our May issue. Numerous sym- posia and workshops have been held in Africa, the Caribbean, North and South America, and Europe. Fellowship programs stimulate the exchange of scien- tists and information.

With the 1991 Conference, ICCCR announced that it will focus exclusively on cancer prevention, at least for the immediate future. It is this orientation which brings the objectives of ICCCR particularly close to those of CCC. The editors and publishers of CCC are pleased to carry the name of ICCCR on the journal's mast-head. We look forward to developing the syn- ergies we believe our common goals will facilitate.
