employee spotlightMeet Cathy Perez. Cathy is the HR Services Manager for the Antioxidants and Phenolics businesses in North America. (Note: this includes facilities and services previously owned by

Merisol in the US). She has been with the company for more than seven years and her office is located in the administration building of the Greens Bayou Plant.

Prior to her current position with Sasol, Cathy’s Human Resources experience included working for companies in the oil and gas and building industries.Cathy and her husband, Alfonso, have four grown children and two “grand cats.” The cats, named Luna and Humphrey, not only keep her busy at home, but images of them seem to have taken up residence in her office. “Anonymously employees will often leave little cat statues at my door. I have a number of shelves decorated with these cute little trinkets and they’re very good for lifting the spirits,” says Cathy. When not at work, Cathy enjoys traveling. Even when she and Alfonso can’t just “get up and go,” they like planning the next trip. Her favorite destination is the Island of Oahu, where they have visited many times. Part of the attraction to the island may be related to the fact that Cathy and Alfonso lived in Oahu when they were stationed there during Alfonso’s tenure in the Navy.Cathy’s travel opportunities have been limited this past year due to recent family events which have required her time, but Cathy believes in family first and has gladly focused her attention where it was needed. As a result, the next trip is not yet well defined, but according to Cathy, “It will be on a beach somewhere.” Many thanks to Cathy for her service to Sasol and best wishes for her future travels.

new processes at lcccThe ECHO project is nearing completion. ECHO stands for Ethylene Conversion to Hexene and Octene and is the name for the construction project building the co-monomer unit, which will use the proprietary tetramerization process. Unit commissioning is already beginning and we hope to celebrate beneficial operations in early 2014. ECHO-2 (construction for the second co-monomer unit), is already being planned. LASER is an acronym for another construction project at the Lake Charles Chemical Complex in our Ethoxylation (ETO) unit. It stands for Louisiana Specialty Ethoxylation Reactor. This project will allow us to use a broader range of alcohols as feedstock and will manufacture a specialty ethoxylate with significantly higher water solubility. This construction project is also wrapping up with beneficial operations expected from this new project in January of 2014.

workforce development resource guideA step-by-step guide to prepare you for a job in support of area industry.New jobs are coming to Southwest Louisiana and it is important that residents who want to succeed in today’s workforce get the required training and credentials NOW. To assist along the way, a resource guide has been developed for job seekers to get from point A to point B on their workforce preparation journey. It includes information to help individuals choose a career, get the training and certifications required, prepare a resume, acquire basic life skills and ultimately, land a job. The resource guide provides valuable information but also seeks to connect job seekers with the right people to help guide them in the right direction. The focus of this resource guide is on craft and skill positions, not four-year bachelor degree programs. Craft and skill positions listed in the resource guide are for industrial manufacturing facilities as well as the contracting companies that provide construction and maintenance support to those facilities.A cornerstone of the SWLA Workforce Resource Guide framework is the Calcasieu Business and Career Solutions Center, a one-stop shop for residents looking to apply for jobs with area industry. Companies looking to hire in the area will access the Center’s applicant database for local, qualified workers.Copies of the resource guide are available at libraries throughout Calcasieu Parish or you can get yours online at www.swlaresourcesguide.com.

one young world summitSasol was a major sponsor for this year’s One Young World Summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa in October. Sasol provided the transportation for participants from around the globe where the company does business, including a representative from the United States. The One Young World Summit is an organization that gathers young people from around the world,

helping them make lasting connections to create positive change. At the annual Summit young delegates, backed by One Young World Counselors, debate and formulate solutions for the pressing issues the world faces. No youth-dominated event outside the Olympic Games brings together more countries than One Young World.Kristin Duquette is the US delegate who was sponsored by Sasol. Kristin is a 22 year-old graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut with a degree in human rights. In

addition to being an excellent student and engaged volunteer, Kristin brought a unique perspective to the Summit as she deals with the challenges of muscular dystrophy. “It was life-changing,” said Kristin as she described her experience. “Due to my diagnosis, I am easily fatigued and that often limits my mobility causing me to use a scooter to get around. This limitation can be very frustrating and has driven me to create the “a day in a wheelchair” program to help increase awareness of the issues faced by people with disabilities.” Kristin’s program situates ambulatory people in wheelchairs and allows them to experience an entire workday with the constraints of this limitation. “During the One Young World Summit I was able to bring this project forward for discussion, and it really energized me to deliver it to a larger audience. I am now looking for opportunities to partner with organizations to get this message out,” said Kristin.During her time in South Africa, Kristin also learned a good deal about the country, the people and Sasol. Although she’s travelled extensively while training and preparing for the Paralympic Games, in swimming competition, she has a special place in her heart for South Africa. “It’s a beautiful place and the people are so genuine,” she said. “I was particularly impressed with all the social investment work that Sasol does – especially sponsoring the men’s Paralympic wheelchair basketball team. I definitely hope to learn more about Sasol and their growth activities in the United States,” said Kristin.

winnie plant updateA major turnaround was recently completed at the Sasol Phenolics Winnie Plant in November. The objectives of the T/A were to perform statutory maintenance, implement several capital projects and replace the sieve, which is integral to one of the units.

The maintenance cost of the outage is expected to come in at just under $500,000, while the capital projects portion will be near $3 MM. Key projects implemented included debottlenecking the separation unit throughput, transition from panel mounted controllers to PLC controls and cooling water supply increase, which will remove condensing limitations. Over 80 Sasol and contractor personnel were involved during the 28-day shutdown at any given time. In addition to in-house maintenance contractor, Mundy, CAT-SPEC, Bay Ltd, CPL Services, Matrix, Empire Scaffold and ETS contractors were also involved. In addition to achieving on spec production within the targeted time, there were no process safety incidents, only 2 first aid incidents and no environmental events during the outage or startup process. Much recognition is due to our dedicated turnaround team comprised of Maintenance, Operations, Engineering, R&D, Procurement and Safety staff from both the Greens Bayou and Winnie Plants.
