Green Shoots

The other day, barely one day into 2017, I was outside clearing some leaves away from a corner of our garden, and there they were... blunt and determined... green shoots, lying exposed by my efforts to ‘tidy things up’. I stopped and looked, unable for a moment to believe what I was seeing. What were those babies doing under there already? I wondered if I should cover them up again, reflecting as I did so, that I wasn’t over last Harvest yet, let alone Christmas!....but there in front of me was the first sign of ‘Spring’...completely uninvited.... irrepressible. Frankly, it felt like seeing tinsel and Christmas decorations in October - just a bit uncomfortable, and ‘out of control’.

...And that got me thinking, about the experience of ‘Christmas just passed’, and how I always feel a bit ‘out of control’ all the way through it. The ‘Feast’ seems to gestate for weeks, piling on the pressure, before the big day, and then when it comes, the shear amount of ‘stuff’ makes me feel very uneasy. Who makes it all? What will happen to it? The cardboard mountain at the recycling bins is, if you stand-back, and caste your memory back to 1995, simply incredible! In the run up to Christmas this year one local person jokingly called me ‘The Grinch’. Perhaps I am!

I suppose that the real problem for me, is that I have not discovered how to relate to the ‘Feast’ that Christmas has become. I sort of struggle with the whole idea that the chief protagonists are us, instead of the fragile simplicity of Jesus, a figure to be uncovered like a ‘green shoot’ under a pile of leaves. It is such a simple picture. I don’t really know how to be a Vicar at Christmas. It should be so simple.

Many of you will know Alison Snaith. Today she sent me this lovely poem, by Howard Thurman. It was, literally an answer to a prayer, because it explains so much better than I possibly could, what I think I feel about Christmas these days.

When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone,

when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with the flocks,

then the work of Christmas begins: to find the lost, to heal those broken in spirit, to feed the hungry, to release the oppressed,

to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among all peoples, to make a little music with the heart…

And to radiate the Light of Christ, every day, in every way,

in all that we do and in all that we say. Then the work of Christmas begins.

...You see, just as the Grinch discovered, there’s more to Christmas than tinsel and toys. We all know that. But the real work of Christmas is too precious to forget. It happens in January and February.... and every day.... wherever life is uncovered, and cherished as it should be. I know that the New Year will be well under-way by the time you read this... but have a good one! May God keep us as the apple of his eye, and may he hide us all under the shadow of his almighty wing as we look forward to 2017!.........Philip

SUPPORT OUR SURGERIESSee a play and Support Our Surgeries

Court Thorn and Kirkoswald GP surgeries host Patient Participation Groups whose role is to liaise with patients and the practice to improve services for the health and wellbeing of patients.

The PPGs also work behind the scenes to raise funds for the surgeries thereby providing, for example, additional equipment for the surgeries.

In association with the PPGs local author Lawrence Nelson will present a special performance of his play ‘The Ghost of Tommy Atkins’ in Armathwaite village hall at 7.30pm on Friday the 24th February.

The play, which Lawrence has presented on numerous occasions to raise funds for The Royal British Legion tells the story of two Lancashire lads who volunteer to fight for their country at the First Battle of The Somme. Only one returns home but they still meet again once a year.

With `The Ghost of Tommy Atkins` you are not so much watching a searing play about friendship, loyalty that lasts beyond the grave and the futility of war as eavesdropping on an old man reminiscing with his boyhood friend. During the play you will become Tommy Atkins.Lawrence will be available for any questions about the play following the performance.

Tickets are £5.00 for adults, £2.50 for 16 – 18yrs old. This event is not suitable for those under 16yrs.

Proceeds from the event will be shared between Court Thorn and Kirkoswald PPGs so,

why not Support Our Surgeries and see a play?

O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,

The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

The term `Tommy Atkins`, or more often just `Tommy`, has been used to describe a British soldier since at least the 1740s, perhaps earlier. The surname Atkins is thought to be old English for `red earth` and it is said that this name was chosen because of the red coats worn by British Infantry.

Others say that there actually was a Tommy Atkins, or several in fact, who served as private soldiers down the years. For example there is mention of a Private Tommy Atkins who, dur-ing the Indian Sepoy Rebellion of 1845 remained at his post as a rearguard to allow his com-rades to escape. He was killed at his position. An Army Chaplain, the Reverend E. J. Hardy (Who is buried near Hornby, Lancashire), wrote of the incident in his diary and recorded the name. During the remainder of the Rebellion any soldier who displayed courage beyond what is normally expected of a British soldier was said to be “doing a Tommy Atkins”.

There is yet another explanation in that the name was chosen at random and inserted into the private soldier’s pay book as an example of how to fill in his personal details although this example only originates roughly from the early 1900s when soldiers were first issued with pay books.

Tommy is also of course immortalised in the poem by Rudyard Kipling, part of which is re-produced on this programme. Whatever the source, Tommy is universally recognised as the nickname of any British soldier.

There is a macabre footnote in the history of `Tommy`. In 1852 the troopship HMS Birken-head was transporting British soldiers and officers with their wives and children to South Africa when it was wrecked 140 kilometres from Cape Town. There were insufficient life-
