SPIRITUALITY Bible Study will continue this summer with Leigh Anne Ring, who will take us on an 8-week Journey
with the Early Church using the Book of Acts. This is a continuation of the story of the Gospel of Luke. Sometimes categorized as a theological narrative, this important book tells of the early church
after Jesus returns to heaven. It’s the story of the beginning of the gathered community that grows in-
to the church. Peter gets another chance after denying Jesus, early disciples face brutal consequences.
Saul is introduced and Paul is launched into ministry.
The Gentiles find their place in the narrative as the Holy Spirit breathes life into the community of
faith and guides them in their witness.
This study begins Tuesday, July 7
New Content uploaded weekly in the Spirituality Folder of MyCedarfield App.
Leigh Anne Ring is a Certified Christian Educator in the Presbyterian Church
(PCUSA) and is currently serving as the Moderator for the Presbytery of the James.
She is a member of Salisbury Presbyterian Church. Last year took a leap of faith and
entered seminary to pursue the Master of Divinity Degree. As an educator, Leigh
Anne is a storyteller - and this is the best story!

Susanna’s Midnight Ride: The Girl Who Won the Revolutionary War
Presented by Libby McNamee
We’ve all heard of Paul Revere, but have you heard of Susanna
Bolling? Five years after the Declaration of Independence, the
American Revolution hung in the balance. In May 1781, General
Cornwallis invaded Hopewell, VA. As 16-year-old Susanna Bolling
served the British general and his officers dinner, she overheard their
plans to capture General Lafayette and crush the American rebellion.
Her midnight ride changed history. In 2019, the Virginia General
Assembly declared December 5 "Susanna Bolling Day."
Come learn more about this true story of revolutionary
courage and conviction.

EMOTIONAL BALANCE Getting Started with Mindfulness
Mindfulness helps us put some space between ourselves and our reactions, breaking down our conditioned responses. Here’s how to tune into mindfulness throughout the day:
1. Set aside some time. You don’t need a meditation cushion or bench, or any sort of special equipment to access your mindfulness skills, but you do need to set aside some time and space.
2. Observe the present moment as it is. The aim of mindfulness is not quieting the mind, or attempting to achieve a state of eternal calm. The goal is simple: we’re aiming to pay attention to the present moment, without judgment. Easier said than done, we know.
3. Let your judgments roll by. When we notice judgments arise during our practice, we can make a mental note of them, and let them pass.
4. Return to observing the present moment as it is. Our minds often get carried away in thought. That’s why mindfulness is the practice of returning, again and again, to the present moment.
5. Be kind to your wandering mind. Don’t judge yourself for whatever thoughts crop up, just practice recognizing when your mind has wandered off, and gently bring it back. That’s the practice. It’s often been said that it’s very simple, but it’s not necessarily easy. The work is to just keep doing it. Results will accrue.

Benefits of Mindfulness
The cultivation of mindfulness has roots in Buddhism, but most religions include some type of prayer or meditation technique that helps shift your thoughts away from your usual preoccupations toward an appreciation of the moment and a larger perspective on life. Professor emeritus Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder and former director of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, helped to bring the practice of mindfulness meditation into mainstream medicine and demonstrated that practicing mindfulness can bring improvements in both physical and psychological symptoms as well as positive changes in health, attitudes, and behaviors. Mindfulness improves well-being. Increasing your capacity for mindfulness supports many atti-tudes that contribute to a satisfied life. Being mindful makes it easier to savor the pleasures in life as they occur, helps you become fully engaged in activities, and creates a greater capacity to deal with adverse events. By focusing on the here and now, many people who practice mindfulness find that they are less likely to get caught up in worries about the future or regrets over the past, are less preoccupied with concerns about success and self-esteem, and are better able to form deep connections with others. Mindfulness improves physical health. If greater well-being isn’t enough of an incentive, scientists have discovered that mindfulness techniques help improve physical health in a number of ways. Mindfulness can: help relieve stress, treat heart disease, lower blood pressure, reduce chronic pain, improve sleep, and alleviate gastrointestinal difficulties. Mindfulness improves mental health. In recent years, psychotherapists have turned to mindfulness meditation as an important element in the treatment of a number of problems, including: depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, couples’ conflicts, anxiety disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
