On 26 Aug 11, an Indo-American team ofountaineers was braving the

    The team requested for an

    limits as the mission involved

    ying into unknown territory and

landing at a density altitude of

    approximately 23000 ft over an

    inhospitable glacier.

    In snow laden terrain and

    narrow connes of the valley,

    manoeuvering a helicopter is very

    challenging. High temperatures

    in the afternoon hours further

    increase difculty level as air

    density reduces. All planned

    missions at such altitudes are

undertaken at early hours of the

    day, when ambient temperatures

    are the lowest.

    The Siachen Pioneers

    ~Tales of Ganesh

Lord Ganesha has many tales woaround him. One of them goesthus. In the snow-capped mountainKailash, lived Lord Shiva and GoddParvathi, along with their two childGanesh and his brother Karthik. Gthe elder son, had patience and wisHe also had a big belly and an elephhead (the why of it is altogether anstory). Karthik, on the other hand,to play. He had strong limbs and waattractive.

But the Devas (deities) alwayswondered who was the wiser of the

two brothers--Ganesh or Karthik?ey called on Lord Brahma to solvthe question. But even he was puzzand nally decided to turn to his so-Narada--who was known to playmischief even with the demi Gods.Narada arrived at Kailash and presthe couple with a mango, claiming it had magical powers. Both Lord Sand his consort decided that one ofchildren should have the mango. Bwho should it be, and how should tdecide it?

It was, then, that Narada came uwith a solution. Lets have a contessaid, addressing Ganesh and KarthBoth of you have to go around theworld three times. Whoever returncan eat the mango. Kartikh lost noin mouting his vehicle- the peacockwas certain that Ganesh could not

up with him. Besides, Ganeshs vehwas a mouse. Karthik ew around world, but when he returned he fouGanesh eating the mango. How coyou do this? Youre not as fast as mhe asked Ganesh. To which, Ganeshreplied: Our parents represent theuniverse. I simply circled them thriNarada chuckled. e Devas foundanswer to the question, and all werpleased.

    Indias nancial capital,

    Mumbai, is always chaotic

    on weekdays. People jostle

for space which is a precious

    commodity. Sundays,

    however, typically oer a

    breather and the citys roads

    wear a leaner look. But

    the Sunday of August 29

this year was one of those

    exceptions. Hundreds of

    devotees of Lord Ganesha

took part in a k alash yatra

    before the installation of the

statue at a temple on P Road.

    ey were chanting bhajans,

    playing with colours, and

    throwing owers even as

    they distributed modak (a

    prasad or sweet oering)

    to passers-by. Tradition

    mandates that the statue of

    Lord Ganesha has to make

    the rounds of nearby areas

    of the temple before being

    installated.

    ese hundreds will now

    swell into thousands, lakhs

    and even millions as many

    countries around the world,

    especially Maharashtra state

    of India, perpare themselves

    to celebrate Ganesh Chaturti-

    -the festival of Lord Ganesha

whose birthday is observedduring the Hindu month of

    Bhadra (mid-August to mid-

    September).

    While celebrated all over

    India, it is most elaborate

    in western and southern

    India. e grandest and most

    elaborate of the celebrations,

    especially in the western India

    state of Maharashtra, lasts for

10 days, ending on the day of

    Ananta Chaturdashi.

    Indeed! even as global

    markets are reeling under

    bad economic news, and the

rains act as a spoiler, Ganesh

    Chaturti festivities are on in

    full swing in India, especially

    Maharashtra. Gold prices,

    for instance, maybe hovering

around Rs 27,000 per 10 gram,

    but ardent Ganpati devotees

have begun making oeringsof the yellow metal to their

    elephant-headed god.

    Also known as Vinayaka

    Chaturthi, it is the Hindu

    festival of Ganesha, who is

    widely worshipped as the

    god of wisdom, prosperity

    and good fortune. Ganesha

is the rst god for getting

puja in all yagas. In Hindu

    temples, Ganesha is depicted

    in various ways--as an acolyte

    or subordinate deity (prsva-

devat); as a deity related to

    the principal deity (parivara-

    devat); or as the principal

    deity of the temple (pradhana),

    treated similarly as the highest

    gods of the Hindu pantheon.

    As the god of transitions,

he is placed at the doorway of

    many Hindu temples to keep

    out the unworthy, similar

to his role as (his mother)

    Parvatis doorkeeper. In

    addition, several shrines are

    dedicated to Ganesha himself,

    of which the Ashtavinayaka

    (eight Ganesha shrines) in

    Maharashtra are particularly well-

    known.

A life-like clay model of Lord

Ganesha is made 2-3 months prior

to the day of Ganesh Chaturthi.

e size of this idol may vary from

3/4th of an inch to over 25 feet.

    To celebrate the festival, splendid

    pandals (tents) are erected to

    accommodate the thousands of

    people who gather to worship

    their beloved god. In Maharashtra,

Lord Ganesha is considered to be

the patron deity of the state.

    e preparations for the festival

    begin much earlier with the

creation of Ganesh Idols. As the

    festival comes nearer these idols

are put up for sale and devotees

shop for them. e festival begins

    with the installation of clay

idols of Ganesha. Aer this, the

    ceremony of pranapratishtha

comes, in which the vital breath

is infused into the idol by priest

    amidst the chanting of mantras.

    Aer this Shodashopachara puja

    takes place.

    Oerings of coconut, jaggery,

21 modaks, 21 blades of durva

    grass and red owers are

oered to the deity. e idol

is worshipped for 10 days. On

the 11th day the idol is taken

to the nearby river or sea to be

    immersed in the water.

It is believed that Ganesha goes

back to his celestial abode taking

with him all the suerings of

    his devotees. e atmosphere of

    visarjan ceremony is enchanting.

    It appears as though entire

    population of Maharashtra has

    descended on the streets. Loud

    cries of Ganpati Bappa Morya,

    Pudhchya Varshi Laukar Ya

echo in the air that captivates

everyone with its energy and sheer

    atmosphere.

In the national capital of India

-- Delhi -- too, the enthusiasm

    of celebrating Ganesh festival

    is no less than Maharashtra.

The festivities have a history too. HistorianShri Rajwade records that the earliest Ganesh

Chaturthi celebrations can be traced back to thetimes of the reigns of dynasties as Satavahana,Rashtrakuta and Chalukya. Historical records revealthat Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations were initiatedin Maharashtra by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja, the great Maratha ruler, to promote culture andnationalism. And it had continued ever since.

ere are also references in history to similarcelebrations during Peshwa times. It is believed thatLord Ganapati was the family deity of the Peshwas.Aer the end of Peshwa rule, Ganesh Chaturthiremained a family aair in Maharashtra from the

period of 1818 to 1892.In 1893, Indian freedom ghter and social

reformer Lokmanya Tilak transformed the annualdomestic festival into a large, well-organised publicevent. Tilak recognised the wide appeal of the deityGanesh as the god for everybody, and popularised

Ganesh Chaturthi as a national festival in ordto bridge the gap between Brahmins and nonBrahmins and nd a context in which to buildnew grassroots unity between them, and genenationalistic fervor among people in Maharashagainst the British colonial rule.

Tilak encouraged installation of large publicimages of Ganesh in pavilions, and also establithe practice of submerging in rivers, sea, or othpools of water all public images of the deity ontenth day aer Ganesh Chaturthi.

Under Tilaks encouragement, the festivalfacilitated community participation andinvolvement in the form of intellectual discour

poetry recitals, performances of plays, musicalconcerts, and folk dances. It served as a meetinground for people of all castes and communitiin times when, in order to exercise control ovethe population, the British discouraged social apolitical gatherings.

    Another popular sweet dish is

    the karanji (karjikaiin Kannada)

which is similar to the modak in

composition and taste but has a

    semicircular shape.

    Public celebrations of the

    festival are hugely popular, with

    local communities (mandalas)

vying with each other to put

up the biggest statue & the best

e festival is also the time

    for cultural activities like singing

    and theater performances,

    orchestra and community

    activities like free medical

    checkup, blood donation camps,

    charity for the poor, etc.

    Today, the Ganesh Festival is

not only a popular festival, it

has become a very critical and

    important economic activity

    for Maharashtra. Many artists,

    industries, and businesses

    survive on this mega-event.

    Ganesh Festival also provides

    a stage for budding artists

to present their art to the

public. e same holds true for

    Hyderabad and Chennai too.

Legend has it that Parvati created Ganesha out ofthe sandalwood dough that she used for her bathand breathed life into him. Letting him stand guardat the door she went to have her bath. When herhusband, Shiva returned, the child who had neverseen him stopped him. Shiva severed the head of thechild and entered his house.

Parvati, learning that her son was dead, wasdistraught and asked Shiva to revive him. Shivacut o the head of an elephant and xed it on thebody of Ganesha. Hence his name Ganapati. Shivaalso bestowed a boon that people would worshiphim and invoke his name before undertaking anyventure.

Another story of his origin is found in the

Brahma Vaivarta Purana. According to this story, when Shani looked at the new born Ganesh, thechilds head was severed instantly. All the godsstarted to bemoan, whereupon Vishnu hurried tothe bank of river Pushpabhadra and brought backthe head of a young elephant, and joined it to thebabys body, thus reviving it.

Ganeshas head symbolises the Atman or thesoul, which is the ultimate supreme reality of human

existence, and his human body signies Maya orthe earthly existence of human beings. e elephanthead denotes wisdom and its trunk represents Om,the sound symbol of cosmic reality.

In his upper right hand Ganesha holds a goad, which helps him propel mankind forward on theeternal path and remove obstacles from the way. enoose in Ganeshas le hand is a gentle implementto capture all diculties.

e broken tusk that Ganesha holds like a penin his lower right hand is a symbol of sacrice, which he broke for writing the Mahabharata. erosary in his other hand suggests that the pursuitof knowledge should be continuous. e l addoo(sweet) he holds in his trunk indicates that one must

discover the sweetness of the Atman.

His fan-like ears convey that he is all earsto our petition. e snake that runs round hiswaist represents energy in all forms. And he ishumble enough to ride the lowest of creatures, amouse. Ganesha is also the destroyer of vanity, selshness and pride. He is the personicationof material universe in all its various magnicentmanifestations.
