Scurry Johnson introdu-ced our speaker today, Dr. Fred-erick Cerise, CEO of the Parkland Health and Hospital System. He started by saying that Parkland sees over a million outpatients a

year, of which 300,000 are unique patients. Parkland is the primary source of care for the poor without insurance. The core insurance policy is $16,000 a year, which is out of reach for many people. Ill-nesses get worse when peop-

le are uninsured; they are not diagnosed as early. There must be a service approach and a community-based effort to care for the unin-sured. Most of the people who voted to build a new Parkland hospital will never step into it. The new Parkland hospital has 862 patient rooms and they are full. There is an Urgent Care Center which relieves the Emergency Room from having to treat people who do not have true emergencies. They are still working on streamlining; the nurses have iphones, and the patients ring the phone. The phones can also scan the medicines, so reminders appear on the phone to monitor them. Parkland has expanded into clinics around the city to pro-vide a lot of outpatient care. Today they are doing a lot of work to change the delivery system to improve care. He gave the exam-ple of patients who can administer their own intravenous medications and can use a smart phone to scan the bag to assist them. They want to improve care so it is better for the patients and the doctors, and it saves costs.

THOUGHTS ON . . .

Flying may not be all plain sailing, but the fun of it is worth the price.

~ Amelia EarhartI have found adventure in flying, in world travel, in business, and even close at hand... Adventure is a state of mind - and spirit.

~ Jacqueline CochranA man should not leave this earth with unfinished business. He should live each day as if it was a pre-flight check. He should ask each morning, am I prepared to lift-off? ~ Diane Frolov and

An old penny pincher had no friends. Just before he died he asked his doctor, lawyer, and pastor to gather around him at bedside.

"I have always heard that you can't take it with you, but I want to disprove that theory," he said. "I have $90,000 under my mattress; I want you each to toss in an envelope with $30,000." The three attended the funeral and each threw his envelope in the grave. On the way back the pastor said, "I must confess. I needed $10,000 for my church, so I only threw in $20,000.”

The doctor then said, "I must confess too. I needed $20,000 for a new hospital I was opening, so I only threw in $10,000."

The lawyer looked at them and shook his head. He said, "Gentlemen, I'm surprised and shocked, I don't see how you could dare to go against that man's final wish. I threw in my personal check for the full amount."

The H2OpenDoors project has been deliver-ing safe drinking water to communities in Central and South America since 2012. A project of the Rotary Club of Peninsula Sunrise, CA, and other clubs in District 5150, the initiative sends teams of volunteers to remote villages to install high-tech solar powered water purification systems.
