While in Thailand…Professor Karen Polon, Professor Selena Kohel, and seventeen Cottey College students engaged in four service-learning projects.

The group united with members of Mae Jo University and the surrounding community to return wild orchids to the forest. They learned the importance of wild orchids to biodiversity and of orchids in general to Thai economy and identity. Everyone partnered with villagers of Baan Mae Kampong to produce baskets and tea pillows and to teach English. They learned about Community Based Tourism,

in which villagers share ownership of how tourism will be welcomed in their village, including use of the proceeds to better the village as a whole. Villagers develop valuable skills, such as communicating, planning, organizing, and managing.

They also participated with volunteers and mahouts at the Elephant Nature Park to feed and bathe rescued elephants. They learned about the “training crush” used to domesticate young elephants and abuses elephants have incurred at the hands of individuals, groups, and the tourism industry. Last but not least, Cottey joined with experts in marine life to plant coral in the

Gulf of Thailand. They learned about the importance of coral to biodiversity, food, jobs, and tourism. The service-learning projects were part of a larger initiative for the students to learn about and reflect upon Thai culture, sustainable and unsustainable tourism.

Just a reminder that the City of Nevada has created No Parking Areas on the east side of College Street and the north side of Sycamore Street. These areas are posted with no parking signs and you may be ticketed if you park with in these areas. Thanks, Neal Swarnes, director of physical plant
