Lafarge Project Three Lafarge have completed the testing of “Project Three” which saw the burning of the following Low Carbon Fuel (LCF) materials. Non-recyclable rubber (not including used tires) and rubber recycling by-products (e.g. polyester/nylon fiber from tire recycling facilities); Non-recyclable plastics from Material Recovery Facilities and the ICI sector Non-odorous oversized and/or unused compost materials (e.g. twigs, plastic bags).

There will be a public meeting at the clubhouse on the 24th October between 7.00 and 9.00pm to present the findings. Lafarge has now completed testing of the following materials. Construction waste. Railway ties Asphalt shingles Paper fibre/wood/plastic composite materials, Manufacturing rejects and trimmings of un-used off-spec personal hygiene products, Non-recyclable rubber (not including used tires) and rubber recycling by-products (e.g. polyester/nylon fiber from tire recycling facilities); Non-recyclable plastics from Material Recovery Facilities and the ICI sector Non-odorous oversized and/or unused compost materials (e.g. twigs, plastic bags). Household goods, packaging labels and tape; non-recyclable paper fibre packaging (and related similar products), Rejects and trimmings from paper recycling facilities (i.e. ragger tails); textiles, carpet cuttings, manufacturing end rolls and cores; Disposable beverage cups and lids (e.g. K-cups).

Lessons Learned. (A very significant change is coming) One of the lessons learned from Project One and two was that securing a consistent, quality supply of processed LCF material is a critical path issue. The outside suppliers were not producing the required quality or a consistent supply to the Bath facility. To combat this Lafarge will take control of the supply chain. Lafarge will be installing bulk storage facilities as well as sorting, shredding, grinding and bulk material handling equipment on the Bath site. Lafarge are planning to burn 91,250 Tons of processed LCF material a year and will process the majority of this material at the Bath facility. They are going to store almost 20,000 tons of processed LCF material on site. (Including unprocessed material) In addition to the needs of the Bath facility (250 tons a day) they will be processing as much as 125 tons a day of additional material for shipment to other sites.Although Lafarge are considering only non‐odorous materials for use in the facility such items a paper cups, plastic lids, plastic bags etc. from “Material Recovery Facilities” (Garbage dumps?) could potentially contain residual odorous bio materials. In order for Lafarge to take full control of the supply chain there will be a considerable investment to install processing equipment, sorters, shredders, grinders, a runoff pond and large scale storage and handling equipment. They are proposing to dedicate 10 Hectares to the east of the facility for storing unprocessed material. There will be a large enclosed storage building to the north west of the main plant and a large storage area for unprocessed material adjacent that. The staging/processing building will be to the north east of the plant and will include a runoff collection pond. Processing 130,000 tons of LCF a year is not a small operation, it could easily bring noise, dust, additional traffic, odours and the potential for ground water contamination into our back yard. Lafarge are aware of this and are taking remedial actions. They are building indoor storage for processed LCF, a runoff pond and are proposing to store excess processed LCFs under tarpaulins.

There is no set date for the installation of this processing equipment. Lafarge are not planning any more public consultations after the one being held on the 24th October in the clubhouse. Bath Canada Day 2018

I am happy to report that the brainstorming session for next year's celebrations produced many excellent suggestions. Residents who were unable to attend are invited to submit suggestions to [email protected] by October 31st.

We are particularly looking for input on the following:• What did you like most about Canada Day 2017?• What things do we need to improve, modify or eliminate?• What new activities would you like to see - consider all age groups

from little ones to seniors. Suggestions for resources, help, volunteers, etc always appreciated.

• Suggestions for a theme for next years parade. The Committee will meet in early November to follow up on the ideas presented and begin to develop the budget.

BATH PICKLEBALL CLUBwww.bathpickleball.ca

BATH PICKLEBALL CLUB UPDATE

A little history first: The Bath Pickleball Club, was initially organized in the fall of 2013 by “Ted Custance”, with the support of the Loyalist Township Recreation Department and their Director of Recreation Services, Andree Ferris. Play commenced in the Bath Public School gymnasium with approximately 8 players and 2 net sets. This sport immediately caught on, with new players showing up almost nightly.

Once the 2014 spring rolled around outdoor play commenced in the tennis courts, with pickleball (PB) court lines painted over top of one of the existing tennis court lines. Since then the tennis court / pickleball courts have undergone a complete rebuild and the Bath courts, including the 4 dedicated PB courts, have since that time become known as the best outdoor courts in the Township, and beyond.

New Club Executive: After the August 2016 resignation of the previous club outdoor coordinators, a new club executive was elected and since September 2016, the Bath Pickleball Club has been under the very capable management of Don Sinkinson (Pres.), Noel O’Niel (V.P.), and Noella Leclerc (Treas.), who are supported by 4 directors which help manage the day to day activities.

2017 Summer Outdoor Season: This past summer season saw the membership climb to 130 plus members, with the courts at or near full use on most occasions. The PB outdoor summer season plays 6 days per week, 4 mornings and 2 evenings, using 7 PB courts (when there are no tennis players). The PB play includes both recreational and competitive action, with many highly spirited matches in both categories. The PB club

Page 8: The Honking Goose - lccra.calccra.ca/wp-content/uploads/Oct-2017-Honking-Goose-PDF.pdf · Deanna Hanes / Annie Belcourt – Bronze in 3.5 level (19+ category). Well done to all Bath

sponsored both a noontime lunch and evening dinner prepared by a local community vendor, and in partnership with Loyalist Township and our local community members, participated in a Canada Day fund raising PB tournament event. The summer season “officially” ends October 6th, but outdoor play will continue as long as there is decent weather.

Bath PB Club Medal Winners: In a recent Pickleball Association of Ontario (PAO) Championship tournament, held Sept 15 – 17 in Markham, Ontario, where there were 324 registered players in 35 divisions, there were a number of Bath PB Club players representing our club. Outdoor Season Ending Dinner & Dance: The outdoor season ending PB Club dinner & dance will be held at the Loyalist Golf Club with a local DJ providing 60’s era music for their dancing pleasure. It should be a blast.

2017 – 2018 Indoor Season: The indoor season commences October 2nd at the Bath Public School. Please refer to the club website for days, times, venues & fees. All those interested must first register for play at the Henderson Recreation Centre in Amherstview. “Newbies” are always welcome, and loaner paddles are available for instruction.

Another Great Season of Aquafit

Sadly we must say “The End” to another season of Aquafit. While working joints, stretching muscles, improving balance the Aquafit gang had a great time Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

A big thank you to Tina Fleming and Janice Firth who provided such capable leadership and instruction.

We can’t wait for summer 2018!

FROM TEE TO GREEN

The 2017 Loyalist Ladies Fall ClassicThe superb condition of the Loyalist Golf Course, as well as the beautiful summer-like weather, contributed to a successful 2017 Loyalist Ladies Fall Classic.

We had twenty-eight golfers participate with two teams of fourteen players and a pool of seven spares. This tournament was a fun three days of friendly competition and camaraderie. We had two team Captains, Brenda Wartman team Lori Kane and Linda Hartley team Sandra Post.

The 2017 Ladies Fall Classic got off to a start on September 19th with the Cocktail Party of hors-d'oeuvres and wine.  The teams received their team uniforms of beautiful sweaters, blue (Lori Kane) and black (Sandra Post) which because, of the warm weather, were only needed for team pictures!

The first game of team alternate shot was played on Thursday, September 21st with team Lori Kane attaining the most points. The second day of competition was held on Saturday, September 23rd with team better ball, team Kane was successful in increasing their lead. The third day of individual match play was held on Sunday, September 24th. This was a very interesting day, as team Post put on a push with just one point difference for the day.

The Lori Kane team was the 2017 Loyalist Ladies Fall Classic Champs.Thank you, to each and every one for your participation and big thank you to the  "cookie" ladies.  We look forward to seeing you next September for the 2018 Loyalist Ladies Fall Classic.

Your Committee:Vernanne Ahern, Harolyn Shewfelt, Trish Dwyer

FEATURE ARTICLEWhat is Long Term Care Insurance?

Each one of us bears a responsibility to act as our own advocate and plan for our own care when the time comes that we can no longer take care of ourselves. Many mistakenly believe the government will take care of us. Any government assistance covers only the most basic care which is far less than what is considered reasonable.

The most logical solution to manage the inevitable is Long term care insurance. Long term care insurance provides the necessary resources when one is no longer independently able to care, physically or mentally, for themselves.

However, this intelligent solution comes with its own set of issues. Traditional Canadian long term care insurance products require full underwriting and as a result over 50% of applicants are declined. Furthermore, they are very costly and out of reach for most Canadians.

Fortunately, with the “Silver Tsunami” of aging Baby Boomers there are new products arriving in the market place to address these needs. They are affordable and do not require a medical exam. To find what works best for you, I suggest you consult with an experienced insurance broker.
