THE BEGINNING

• Photography was not invented until the 1820s and was not identified until ten years later. Before photography people used basic principles of lens and photography. They would project the image onto a wall or a paper, but the problem was printing had not yet been invented. The invention that people used was called the Camera Obscura which is Latin for “The Dark Room” and it was around for a few centuries before the creation of a camera.

• There are beliefs that Camera Obscura was created during the 13th-14th centuries. But there is a manuscript made by an Arabian man called Hassan ibn Hassan that was created around the 10th Century that has the principles on how to work the Camera Obscura

CAMERA OBSCURA

• Camera Obscura is basically the same as a pinhole camera which is relatively easy to create.

• Camera Obscura is essentially a dark, closed space in the shape of a box with a hole on one side of it. The hole must be small enough in proportion to the box to make the camera obscura work properly. The light coming in through a tiny hole transforms and creates an image on the surface that it meets, like the wall of the box. The image is flipped and upside down, however, which is why modern analogue cameras have made use of mirrors. It is believed that a lot of the Renaissance artists did use the Camera Obscura.

THE FIRST PHOTOGRAPH

• The First photograph was taken in 1825 by the French inventor, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce and was from a window at Le Gras in Saint-Loup-De-Varennes in Eastern France, ear to the city of Lyon. The exposure of light must be exposed for eight hours, so that the sun would be able to move from east to west to give light to the whole picture.

FIRST COMMERCIAL CAMERA

One of the first commercial cameras put on the Market was the Kodak Brownie. Introduced to the world in 1900, the Kodak Brownie was invented by the American company Eastman Kodak or also known as Kodak. The price for the Kodak Brownie was roughly $1 (or in today standards $31 or £24)

The Kodak Brownie was essentially a piece of cardboard with a very simple meniscus lens.

PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT

• Photography under Lockdown

• Camera used: Nikon camera D3500

INTRODUCTION

• For my Badley project I have chosen Photography. Due to the current circumstances of staying inside during this period, I have decided to base my project on “Photography under Lockdown”. For my first section of this project I have chosen to do “Texture Patterns” and look at different texture or patterns in my garden. The second section to this project is “Portrait” taking pictures of my family members or taking the “Candid” technique. For my third section I have based this on different “Lighting” patterns throughout the day. For the final section to my project I have chosen to “Depth of Field” and using aperture to show the different variations of “Depth of Field”. I have chosen these techniques to work on my photography skills and learn different types of photography.

SECTION 1: “TEXTURE PATTERNS”

Photo 1 – Is a picture of the neighbour’s wall. It shows the rough texture patterns on the wall and the different coloured bricks.

Photo 2 – Is a picture of the top of a Chinese stool. To obtain this picture I had to point the camera downwards. It shows the different symmetrical patterns that are painted onto the stool.

Photo 3 – This picture of these small flowers, shows the different colour patters on each flower. The small petals on each of the flowers show the different patterns and the smooth texture of the flowers.

Photo 4 – Is a mat based on the floor. I used the same technique as Photo 2 taking the picture from above. On the mat it shows the hexagonal shapes.

Photo 5 – Shows the environment spreading. The long ivy has grown on the wooden fence and has started to decay away.

Photo 6 - Show a lock on a wooden door. The metal lock hangs lifelessly as it starts to decay away with the rust absorbing the lock.

SECTION 2: “PORTRAIT”

Photo 1 – front view of the face. This photo has a normal exposure. The photo is quite melancholy.

Photo 2 – 3 quarter view of the face. The photo is closer up to the face that the previous photo. His eyes unlike the previous photo, are looking beyond the camera giving it a more interesting look.

Photo 3 – Very similar to the 2 photo just that the subject has switched sides.

SECTION 3: “LIGHTING”

Photo 1 – I put a white card facing opposite of where the sun was facing, which then created a shadow on the face. It created a hard light on the picture.

Photo 2 – I have moved the white card facing the same direction as the sun which lit up the face creating a soft light.

Photo 3 – For this picture I moved the white card below the face, which then lit up the bottom half of his face creating a soft light.

Photo 4 – I decided to take a photo of “Halo of Light”. I have the sun facing behind the picture instead of in front which would cause a silhouette effect. Unfortunately for this picture of the lavender I don’t have a dark enough background, which is why there is not enough light bouncing off the lavender.

Photo 5 – In this photo, I tried to get the correct “White Balance”. I took a photo of these two pots. I used “Daylight White Balance” as I took the photo midday. There are many different “White Balances” for different times of the day.

SECTION 4: “DEPHT OF FIELD”

Photo 1 – I took a photo of an overgrown plant. I have focused on the plant itself which has then blurred the background fence. Showing the plant itself.

Photo 2 – I have focused up on the lamp which has then roughly blurred out the background.

Photo 3 – The exact same as Photo 2 just that instead of focusing on the lamp, I have focused on the fence in the background.

Photo 4 – I have taken this photo from quite far out and have positioned the Stakes in front of the camera and have blurred the background by using a low exposure.

CONCLUSION

• This project apart from the initial Badley Project, was to explore photography. This is the first time I have done a project with photography and it was harder than a normal project as I had to improvise and become more creative in my back garden under lockdown. Luckily I had tools to use for my photos, for example in the Lighting section I used a Tripod and a White card. But I got to explore different techniques with the advice of my dad and learn new things about photography in general.
