THE HIGHLAND GAMES
This sporting tradition is Scottish. In the Highlands (the
mountains of Scotland) families, or “clans”, started the
Games hundreds of years ago.
Some of the sports at the Games are international: the high
ump and the long ump, for e!ample. "ut other sports
happen only at the Highland Games. #ne is tossing the
ca$er.
“Tossing” means thro%ing, and a “ca$er” is a long, hea&y
piece of %ood. In tossing the ca$er you lift the ca$er (it can
$e '&e or si! metres tall). Then you thro% it in front of you.
t the Highland Games a lot of men %ear ilts.
These are traditional Scottish sirts for men. "ut they*re not
all the same. +ach clan has a dierent “tartan”. That*s the
name for the pattern on the ilt. So at the Highland Games
there are traditional sports and traditional clothes.
