 THE HIGHLAND GAMES  This sporting tradition is Scottish. In the Highlands (the mountains of Scotland) families, or “clans”, started the Games hundreds of years ago. Some of the sports at the Games are international: the high  ump and the long ump, for e!ample. "ut other sports happen only at the Highland Games. #ne is tossing the ca$er.  “T ossing” means thro%ing, and a “ca$er ” is a long, hea&y piece of %ood. In tossing the ca$er you lift the ca$er (it can $e '&e or si! metres tall). Then you thro% it in front of you.  t the Highland Games a lot of men %ear ilts.  These are traditional Scottish sirts for men. "ut they*r e not all the same. +ach clan has a dierent “tartan”. That*s the name for the pattern on the ilt. So at the Highland Games there are traditional sports and traditional clothes.

instrument - the $agpipes.

 

 The $agpipes are &ery loud. They say Scots soldiers played

them $efore a $attle. The noise frightened the soldiers on

the other side.
