F irst of all let me tell all of you that the 2013 USCGC Duane Reunion has been moved from Erie, Pa. to the Merry Manor in South Portland, Maine. The dates will be September 11, 12, 13, 14 with the banquet being on the 13 th . This move was acted on by those at this year’s reunion and moved so as to try to engage more precipita- tion in future reunions. Our ranks are getting low at reunions held out of the New England area. This move will hopefully draw more crewmembers and help provide your association with a better finan- cial base. It is your dues that keep us afloat. The ships store barely holds its own these days with the cost of items rising every year. I am sorry if you had planned to go to Erie and now you may have to change your plans but this move was discussed at length and voted by those in attendance in Tybee Island. If you have any ques- tions or comments, please give me a call and I will explain further. Another very small change we had and I think that it worked out very well was that we held our busi- ness meeting late Thursday instead of on Saturday. This gave everyone the opportunity on Saturday to get ready for the ban- quet without rushing. We will continue this in the future. First of all let me tell all of you that the 2013 USCGC Duane Reunion has been moved from Erie, Pa. to the Merry Manor in South

Portland, Maine. The dates will be September 11, 12, 13, 14 with the banquet being on the 13th. This move was acted on by those at this year’s reunion and moved so as to try to engage more precipita-tion in future reunions. Our ranks are getting low at reunions held out of the New England area. This move will hopefully draw more crewmembers and help provide your association with a better finan-cial base. It is your dues that keep us afloat. The ships store barely holds its own these days with the cost of items rising every year.

I am sorry if you had planned to go to Erie and now you may have to change your plans but this move was discussed at length and voted by those in attendance in Tybee Island. If you have any ques-tions or comments, please give me a call and I will explain further.

Another very small change we had and I think that it worked out very well was that we held our busi-ness meeting late Thursday instead of on Saturday. This gave everyone the opportunity on Saturday to

get ready for the ban-quet without rushing. We will continue this in the future.

As you can see, all but two of these crewmembers are from above the Mason Dixon Line with one from Virginia and the other from North Carolina. The weather was cool and breezey for the most part but very comfortable. It was perfect weather for sightseeing. On Thursday most of the crew went into Savannah and did the trolley tour. As they arrived later in the day they were given the oppor-tunity to resume the tour on Friday, which they did. Dinner was had at Paula Deans. We all toured Fort Polaski. On return to the hospitality room, we held our busi-ness meeting. The first item on the agenda was to designate someone to get the word out to all crew-members via national military magazines about future reunions. Dave Bunch will take on this job. The second item was to find someone to try to hunt down crewmembers on our database that we have not seen or heard from in some time. The object of this project is to try to get more participation into the association. This will be a very time consuming job so if there is anyone out there that would like to help Jim Orrock, please contact me and I will put you in contact with Jim. We have many names that do not have up to date information, which will make this job even harder. So, if you have changed any of your info in the past few years, please send those changes to me and I will get them to Jim. Thank You!

Next on the agenda was the 2013 reunion. After much discussion, as I have said above, South Port-land was voted to be our next location. The cost will be $95.00 per night with a full breakfast. We will have our own hospitality room where we can bring in anything we wish for drink and food.

In this issue, we have a tentative plan of the day. I am still in the process of finalizing the events. I will have more info in the next Helm. Please call me with any questions you may have. A minimum of 25 people will need to sign up for the tours.
