B. SpecialRequirementsforAdmissionInadditiontothegeneralUniversityrequirementsstatedintheGSUCBulletin,applicantsforadmissionarerequiredtohavereceivedabachelor'sdegreewithamajorinoneofthefollowingsubjects:ComparativeLiterature;English;amodernforeignlanguage(e.g.,French,German,Italian,Portuguese,Spanish)oraClassicallanguageacceptabletotheadmissionscommittee;philosophy;history;orinotherfieldsacceptabletotheAdmissionsandAwardsCommittee.

Inaddition,theapplicantshouldhaveasuperiorrecordinundergraduatecoursesinliterature.AnapplicantwhohasanM.A.degreeinasingleliteratureandwhomeetstheotherspecialrequirementsmayalsobeeligibleforadmission.

Applicantsmustpossesslinguisticandliterarypreparationsufficienttoqualifyforadmissiontograduatecoursesinaforeignliteratureoftheirchoice.Theyarealsorequiredtohaveareadingknowledgeofanapprovedsecondforeignlanguage,whichshouldpermitthemtoreadliteratureinthislanguagewithease.Thisknowledgeofasecondforeignlanguagemaybetestedbyawrittenexamination.Anapplicantpresentingonlyoneforeignlanguagemaybeadmittedtomatriculationconditionally.Anyconditionsmustbesatisfied,normallythroughexamination,beforethecompletionof15credits.

ApplicantsforthePh.D.degreeinComparativeLiteraturewithaspecializationinClassicsarerequiredtohaveaknowledgeofClassicalGreekandLatin.ApplicantswhohavenotstudiedoneoftheClassicallanguagesareadvisedtoinvestigatetheSummerLatin/GreekInstituteattheGraduateCenter.

Applicants for the Ph.D. degree in Comparative Literature with a specialization in German arerequiredtohaveaknowledgeofGerman.Applicants for a Ph.D. degree in Comparative Literature with a specialization in Italian arerequiredtohaveaknowledgeofItalian.

ApplicantsarerequiredtotakeonlytheverbalandquantitativeaptitudetestsoftheGraduateRecordExamination.Noadvancedtestinasubjectareaisrequired.InternationalstudentsmustalsofurnishtheTOEFLscoresinadditiontothegeneralGREtest. StudentsadmittedascandidatesfortheM.A.whowanttoapplyforthePh.D.mustfinishalldegreerequirementsfortheM.A.beforeapplyingforadmissionascandidatesforthePh.D.Anexceptiontothisrulemaybemadeinthecaseofexceptionallywell‐qualifiedstudents,asjudgedbytheAdmissionsandAwardsCommittee. TheCUNYdoctoralfacultyconsistsofprofessorsfromTheGraduateSchoolandmanyoftheseniorcollegesoftheCityUniversity.Thefaculty'sspecializationscovertheProgram'smajorfieldsofconcentrationinallEuropeanlanguagesandliteraturesandmajorareasofcultureandtheory.

ThroughtheExecutiveCommittee,thefacultysetsProgrampolicywithintheBylawsoftheGraduateSchoolandoftheUniversity.TheExecutiveCommitteeiscomposedoftheExecutiveOfficerandtheDeputyExecutiveOfficerexofficio,threeelectedfacultymembers,andthreeelectedstudentrepresentatives.Thefacultymembersareelectedbytheentiredoctoralfacultyforthree‐yeartermscoterminouswiththetermoftheExecutiveOfficer(whoisappointedbythePresidentoftheGraduateSchool).Studentmembersareelectedbythestudentsforone‐yearterms.OtherstandingandadhoccommitteesreporttotheExecutiveCommittee.TherearestudentmembersonmostProgramcommittees,andstudentsparticipateintherevisionoftheHandbook,ReadingList,anddegreerequirements.AllstudentsareinvitedtoajointmeetingwiththeExecutiveCommitteetwiceayear.

D. FacultyResponsibilitiesThefacultyhasresponsibilitythroughmembersonthestandingcommitteesoftheProgramtoestablishpoliciesfortheProgram.ThefacultymaymakedirectrecommendationstotheGraduateCouncilwithrespecttocurriculum,andtotheadministrationwithrespecttoallmattersthataffecttheProgram.

TheProgramfacultymeetsatleastonceayear,atwhichtimethefacultyreceivesareportfromtheExecutiveCommittee.Aquorumconsistsof25personsor50percentofthefaculty,whicheverissmaller. E. lecturesaroundthecityandelsewhere;specialeventsandprograms;jobopeningsaroundthecountry;housingopportunities,andfinancialaidopportunitiessuchasspecialfellowshipsandgrants.

ManylibrariesareavailabletoGSUCstudentsinNewYorkCity.EspeciallyusefularetheNewYorkPublicLibrary'sgeneralholdingsandspecialcollections,whichsupplementtheGSUC'sholdings.Ifastudentis

Financialassistanceisavailabletofull‐timedoctoralmatriculantsatTheGraduateSchoolandUniversityCenterofTheCityUniversityofNewYorkthroughaprogramoffellowships(bothservice‐connectedandnonservice‐connected),grants,assistantships,tuitionfellowships,loans,andCollegeWorkStudyassignments.Awardsaregrantedonthebasisofneedandmerit.Amodestnumberofawardsaremadeavailabletominoritygroupstudents.StudentsareadvisedtoseetheExecutiveOfficeraboutfinancialaiduponadmissiontotheProgram.

ItisespeciallyimportantthatstudentswhoqualifyforCollegeWorkStudymaketheirinterestinsuchfinancialassistanceknowntotheFinancialAidCommitteethroughtheAssistantProgramOfficer.Often,CollegeWorkStudyfundsbecomeavailableonanunscheduledbasis,andqualifiedapplicantsmustbesoughtquickly. 1. Anabstractofthedissertationproposal(tentypedpages)andastatementontheprogressoftheresearch(amaximumoffivetypedpages)mustbesubmittedwiththeapplication.Studentsareadvisedtokeepinmindthatthereviewcommitteeswillbecomposedoffacultyfromvariousprograms.Proposalsshould,therefore,beclearlywrittenandjargon‐free.

2. Twolettersofreferencemustbesubmitted,onefromtheapplicant'sdissertationadviserandonefromanotherfacultymemberintheapplicant'sdiscipline.3. ApplicationsshouldbedirectedtotheAssociateProvostforAcademicAffairsthroughtheapplicant'sExecutiveOfficerandmustbesubmittedbyFebruary1.Noextensionofthisdeadlinewillbeallowed.

B.StudentTravelandResearchFund Eligibility:Applicantsmustbematriculatedstudentsregisteredduringthesemesterforwhichthestipendisrequested.Applicationsareconsideredonthebasisoffinancialneedandareprocessedona"firstcome"basis. Purpose:TheStudentTravelandResearchFundprovidesstipends(limitedtooneperacademicyearperstudent)intheamountof$300.00orlessforthefollowing: 1. Registration expense and/or travel expenses for participation in professional conferences andseminarswheretheapplicantisinvitedtopresentapaperorconductaworkshop.2. Procedure:Applicantsmustsubmitanapplicationform(availableon‐line)Awards:NoticeofanawardisgivenaftereachcompletedapplicationisreviewedbothbytheDirectorofFinancialAidandOfficeoftheProvost. Receiptsmustbekept.Stipendsarepaiduponpresentationofreceiptsforexpendituresaftertheyhavebeenincurred.Receiptsmustbesubmittedwithintwoweeksoftravelwhichtheywererequested. The Institute of International Education has awarded a grant of $2,000 to the Modern LanguageAssociation to enable individual foreign graduate students to attend the annual December MLA

Aftertheirfirstyearofstudy,studentsmayberecommendedforteachingpositionsintheCUNYcolleges.StudentsinComparativeLiteraturehavetaughtComposition,ModernLanguages,ComparativeLiterature,andMediaStudiesatmanyoftheCUNYcolleges.Studentsarealsonotifiedofopeningsatothereducationalinstitutionsthroughoutthetristatearea.ChecktheProgrambulletinboardregularlyforthesenotices. TheProgramsometimesreceiveslast‐minutecallsfromdepartmentchairslookingforadjunctteachers.MakesuretoinformtheAssistantProgramOfficerthatyouareinterestedinteachingandthatshehasyourcurrentphonenumber.DivisionsoftheCityUniversityofNewYorkareexpectedtogivepreferencetoCUNYstudentswhenhiringadjuncts.AlistofCUNYcollegesanddepartmentchairsisavailableintheComparativeLiteratureoffice.Studentsmayalsowritedirectlytochairsofthevariousdepartmentsatcollegeswithinthearea. TheMLAalsopublishestheJobInformationList,whichhasbecomethecentralclearinghouseforlistingjobannouncementsinEnglish,ForeignLanguages,andComparativeLiterature.Itappearsfourtimesayear.TheComparativeLiteratureProgrammaintainsasubscriptiontotheJobInformationList,whichcanbeconsultedintheProgramoffice. ii.TheAmericanComparativeLiteratureAssociation TheAmericanComparativeLiteratureAssociation(ACLA)isthenationalcomparativeliteratureassociation.Itsponsorsanannualconventionandpublishesanewsletterwithjobannouncements,alistingofdissertationsinprogress,andannouncementsofawardsandprizes.AsubscriptiontothejournalComparativeLiteratureisavailableatadiscounttomembers.MembershipinformationisavailablefromtheAssistantProgramOfficer.StudentsspecializinginliteraturessuchasClassicsorSlaviclanguagesshouldbeawareofspecializedorganizationsandnationalmeetingsintheirdisciplines,suchastheAmericanPhilologicalAssociationortheAmericanAssociationfortheAdvancementofSlavicStudies.ManyorganizationsareaffiliatedwiththeMLAandholdtheirannualconferencesatthetimeoftheMLAconvention. graduateprogramsthroughouttheUnitedStatesisconsideredanunsatisfactorygrade. ArecordsheetforeachstudentisonfileintheProgramoffice.Thissheetnotescoursestaken,

examinationspassed,andextracurricularactivities.Eachacademicyear,theExecutiveCommitteewillconductastudentreview,withparticularattentiontostudentswhosegradelevelsorratesofprogress

ForstudentsspecializinginClassicalAntiquity,theMiddleAgesortheRenaissance,thetworequiredlanguagesareeitherClassicalGreekorLatin,andanappropriatemodernlanguage.

Dictionarieswillbeallowedonlyintheancient,classical,andmedievalexaminations,unlessastudentis

specializinginClassics,inwhichcaseoneoftheexaminationsmustbepassedwithoutadictionary. TheLatinexaminationconsistsofachoiceoffourpassages,oneeachinClassicalandMedievalprose

andoneeachinClassicalandMedievalpoetry.Ofthesefour,thestudentisrequiredtotranslatetwo

passages,oneinproseandoneinpoetry.

The ExecutiveOfficermay recommendexemption froma language examination for studentswho

have passed at least two graduate courses totaling at least six credits in the literature of that

languagewithagradeofB+orbetter. Thestudentisrequiredtohavepassedtheexaminationorattainedexemptioninonelanguagenolater

thanthecompletionoftheFirstExamination.Alllanguagerequirementsmustbemetbeforeastudent

canbeadmittedtotheSecondExamination.

Allmodernlanguageexaminationsaretwohoursinlengthandwillconsistofoneliteraryandone

criticalpassage.Ifthestudentshouldfailtheexamination,thepaperwillbereadbyasecondfaculty

periodintheearlyhistoryoftheliterature,oneperiodinthelaterliteraryhistory,andonemajorauthororgenre,orequivalentareaorperiodofstudy.Iftheprincipalliteratureisaforeignliterature,partof

theexaminationshallbeconductedinthelanguageofthatliterature.Thestudentmayelectto

substituteforanationalliteraturetheliteratureofoneofthefollowingperiods:Classical,Medieval,orRenaissance.

PartIIoftheexaminationwillbebasedonthestudent'sworkinComparativeLiterature.Thissectionisnot

necessarilyrestrictedtothestudent'scoursework.Itisintendedtotestthestudent'sknowledgeandability

todiscussliteraryproblemsintheareachosenforexamination. Everystudentisrequiredtotakeasectiononliterarytheoryinatleastoneofthetwopartsofthe

changed. Beforechoosingadissertationdirector,thestudentshouldconsultwiththeExecutive Officer.Thestudentusuallyhasasingledirector,butmay,ifwarranted,havetwoco‐directors.The

directormustbeamemberoftheComparativeLiteraturedoctoralfaculty. AftertheProspectusCommitteehasevaluatedtheProspectus,thestudentmayjointhe

Tomeetemergencyneeds,individualsmaybeappointedtemporarilytothedoctoralfacultyforaperiodofonesemesteroroneyear.Suchtemporaryappointmentscannotberepeatedforacumulativetotalofmorethanoneacademicyear(twosemesters).TomeetanemergencytheExecutiveOfficermay
