I believe in Native American Studies because as a discipline it raises our critical consciousness of how individually and collectively we identify ourselves, how we treat one another, how we recognize our relationship with our environment, and how we create policy in relation to all of these things. I believe in Native American Studies because it forces me as an author, educator, and lifelong learner to think outside of the conventional academic box; a system that has previously excluded Indigenous voices. It is time for these voices to be heard, to be discussed, and to be honored.

April Lindala, NMU Center for Native American Studies director

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

When you enroll in the NAS major or take NAS classes, you will engage with tribal citizens and tribal communities for a variety of activities that reinforce tenets of the relationship between Anishinaabe and the environment. Previously, students have participated in art workshops and cultural gatherings where they learned how to • make tools for hand harvesting manoomin (wild rice) • take care of deer and moose hides• collect wiigwaas (birch bark) and black ash to make baskets and picture frames • collect maple sap and participate at sugar bush camp• investigate treaty line areas for purposes of hunting and gathering

I learned about the world through a perspective I had never been taught before. I have learned so much about the culture of the Anishinaabe, the language, traditional ecological knowledge, and plant identification and uses. I know these are things that I will always carry with me and I hope to continue learning for the rest of my life.

Campus Living

Sure, freshmen and sophomores “have to” live on campus, but that quickly turns into “get to.” Have a friend you want to room with? We’ll do our best to make that happen. Plus, you can pick your top choices of residence halls. Wherever you land, you’re going to end up with new friends for life.

NMU’s 10 halls are divided into smaller “houses”—each with their own personalities, hallway murals and activities. Cable, Internet, laundry—free! For upperclassmen, there are on-campus apartments as well as rentals in the community.

RESIDENCE HALL ROOM LAYOUT

Most students share a suite with three other people—basically it’s two rooms connected by an adjoining private bathroom.

Our campus chefs win national awards for special meals, like the Hunter’s Feast or Pigstock, and everyday innovations, such as the grain and veggie bar at The Marketplace food court. Japanese, Tex-Mex, grilled cheese and smoothie restaurants as well as Starbucks also keep you fueled up on campus. Menu items from the Decolonizing Diet Project, a research project led by Dr. Martin Reinhardt that explored Great Lakes Indigenous foods, are often featured at the annual First Nations Food Taster.

Whether you grew up here, vacationed here or have never even heard of Marquette, once you experience this special community it’s a part of you.

Northern’s campus is right in town and stretches down to the sandy Lake Superior beachfront. You can walk to the grocery store, farmer’s market, restaurants and downtown shopping. You might cross-country ski to class after a storm blankets the town in white (or head to Marquette Mountain to snowboard). Wherever you go, whatever you do, you’ll feel the city’s friendly vibe and residents’ zest for fun.

My degree outlined and refined my skills through writing bilingually, speaking Aanishnaabemowin, understanding my culture, and being able to advocate for my people. A degree in Native studies is not easy…but with the right motivation and networking it can be the most fulfilling thing a young person can do for themselves.

Hannah VallierMajor: SociologyMinor: Native American Studies

I have learned so much of our people’s history, laws surrounding our reservations, our rights as Native Americans and coming up I will be learning about environmental movements. I cannot begin to explain what the NAS program has done for me and how it has helped me get ready for my career path to work with Native American families.

Tyler LaPlauntMajor: Management of Health and Fitness, BS; Exercise Science, MS. Current: Community Health Educator, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians

I spent most of my life hiding the fact that I was Native American. After listening to a guest lecture by Dr. Martin Reinhardt in one of my nutrition classes I began doing a lot of self-learning about who I was and where I came from. Marty and the CNAS were always willing to answer my questions and direct me to certain books to read. When I entered my master’s program, all of my research papers were geared towards Native American health, activity and nutrition. It was my way of learning more about my culture and who I was while studying what I loved the most, the human body.

Warren PetoskeyFall 2015 Elder-in-Residence

The Center for Native American Studies and its programs are for Native and non-Native students alike. I was impressed by the united effort of staff and students volunteering to help out with different needs in the program and how they worked together. If you are Native and are looking for a good support system in a college that can help you and is dedicated to your success, NMU is the place to go and reach your goals.
