For the Birds This picture of a barred owl was taken from the kitchen window of John and Carol Ford in the Ledges a couple weeks ago. He was perched above their bird feeders for several hours, but as far as they could tell, he was unsuccessful in his hunting.

The day before that, a beautiful red-shouldered hawk perched about 20 feet from their window, but left before John could get his camera.

John’s pleased to report seeing many typical song birds at their feeders or elsewhere on campus at various times during the year including chickadees; nuthatches; downy, hairy, and red-bellied woodpeckers; cardinals; titmice; mourning doves; goldfinches; house finches; cedar waxwings; robins; chipping, fox, and English sparrows; and juncos, and figures he’s probably left out a few.

Jason Anick Acoustic Trio Sunday, March 3 at 3pm

Taylor’s 2019 Concert Series, sponsored by Bank of New Hampshire, continues Sunday, March 3 at 3pm with the Jason Anick Acoustic Trio.

Fiddle, guitar, and bass – it’s a combination as old as the hills. But follow Jason Anick, Max O’Rourke and Greg Loughman into those hills, and you’ll find yourself taking unexpected turns and discovering vistas you never knew were out there. It’s a new brand of acoustic music they make, traditional instrumentation spinning ear-catching melodies, channeling the wit and spontaneity of three irrepressible musical storytellers.

This event, which is free and open to the public, is kindly sponsored by Taylor Residents Barbara Harris and

Bonnie & Jim Doherty.

TaylorCare News

As most of our Residents are aware, Taylor Community now boasts a licensed home health care service, which we call TaylorCare. The demand for TaylorCare with our Independent Residents has continued to grow since we began the offering in May of 2017, when we had a single nurse on staff. As of this writing, we have a fulltime Registered Nurse (Heather Bell), two Licensed Nursing Assistants (Sandra Berry and Laura Ryan) and we have just engaged a part-time personal caregiver (Julie Ladnay). TaylorCare now offers our services seven days per week. Our rates are lower than other health care agencies in the area, plus we have the advantage of offering services in increments of 15 minutes – as opposed to the required minimum of two hours other service providers require. We are flexible, capable and ready to serve you!

As the leader of TaylorCare, Heather Bell performs a range of functions. In addition to meeting with all new TaylorCare clients to create a plan of service and obtain written orders from primary care physicians, Heather also provides hands-on assistance with personal care and homemaker services when our other TaylorCare care givers are already scheduled. Heather also is in frequent consultation with doctors’ offices, pharmacies, the Laconia Clinic, Lakes Region General Hospital and other facilities to make certain that we have the most current information pertaining to each of our TaylorCare clients. In her role as a Registered Nurse, Heather also is responsible for performing blood draws (fasting and non-fasting), medication management, blood pressure checks, ear flushes and wound care (on an as-needed basis) for Independent Residents. There is no question that Heather is one busy nurse!

As a result, Heather’s time at Taylor is precious AND scheduled. It is not unusual for Residents to give her a call during the day and ask her to come to their cottage or Woodside apartment for a consultation or assistance with a medication. As is the case for any health care provider, it is difficult for Heather to be readily available to perform home visits for such requests. Certainly services such as the Visiting Nurses Association charge for their home visits (albeit they accept Medicare payments; TaylorCare is strictly private pay). Primary care physicians (PCP’s) don’t make house calls. Therefore, in view of the value of Heather’s time, we must be clear that a request for her to make an in-home visit will result in a charge. The rate is $50/hour with a minimum of 15 minutes. A Resident can certainly schedule an appointment to come to Heather’s office for a consultation; in that case, there would be no charge. But, in view of the value we place on Heather’s time, we must make sure that we are charging for her time in at-home visits to reflect that value.

Should you have any questions about TaylorCare or our charges for Nursing services, please feel free to contact Hank Offinger, Director of Care Management, at 366-1207.

Scam Alert!

Here’s this one again… with two residents reporting it.

Your telephone rings... and the caller purports to be from Medicare. He needs additional information from you to issue your new Medicare card.

This is certainly a scam.

Here’s something really scary: One resident told us the caller already had her address, age, and date of birth, and was requesting her Social Security Number.

Neither resident took the bait, and both reported the scam. Do not offer your personal information over the phone unless you are absolutely certain of the caller. Medicare will not initiate contact via telephone.

It's that time of year when New Hampshire Magazine polls NH Residents for their opinions for The Best of the Best in NH… The link to the 2019 listing appears below. You’re required to complete at least 10 entries; and there isn't one that Taylor fits into, but at the end, it asks if you have a recom-mendation. How about: Best Continuing Care Retirement Community?! I know there is at least one vote under that category. Want to join me??
