Helpful Hints

Work at your own level

Balance your life

Discover and develop your strengths and interests

Commit to what you are interested in (Scouts, Club

Sports, Music Lessons, Mock Trial, Debate)

Give back: volunteer opportunities

Go beyond the minimum: commit to 3-4 years of

same class/club/etc.

Plan your own course; do not adopt your friend’s

course

Myths

Freshman year doesn’t matter because the UC’s only look at grades from sophomore and junior years– Freshman year establishes study habits

– Freshman year determines classes for 10th grade

– Colleges review the entire transcript

A college’s ranking is more important than finding the right fit for you– How rankings work

– Rankings don’t matter if the college is not a good fit for you
