our church and gardens.

We set scripture, prayer and sacraments at the center of our communal life.

We practice inclusive hospitality, valuing diverse experiences and contributions from our parish,

our neighbors, and the wider community.

We honor our progressive Anglo-Catholic heritage through our service at the altar and our service to those in need.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant The Lord be with you.People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON Jeremiah 28:5-9

The prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord; and the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord fulfill the words that you have prophesied, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord, and all the exiles. But listen now to this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.”

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

PSALM 89:1-4,15-18Plainsong, Mode VIII

Your love, forever will I sing.

Your love, O Lord, for ever will I sing; * from age to age my mouth will proclaim your faithfulness. For I am persuaded that your love is established for ever; * you have set your faithfulness firmly in the heavens.

“I have made a covenant with my chosen one; * I have sworn an oath to David my servant:I will establish your line for ever, * and preserve your throne for all generations.’”

Happy are the people who know the festal shout! * they walk, O Lord, in the light of your presence. They rejoice daily in your Name; * they are jubilant in your righteousness.

For you are the glory of their strength, * and by your favor our might is exalted.Truly, the Lord is our ruler; * the Holy One of Israel is our King.

Your love, forever will I sing.

THE SECOND LESSON Romans 6:12-23

Do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 10:40-42

Deacon The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said, “Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple-- truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.”

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord.People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON The Rev. Bo Reynolds

THE NICENE CREED The Book of Common Prayer, p. 358Said by all, standing.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

With all our heart and with all our mind, let us pray to the Lord, saying, “Lord, have mercy.”

For the peace of the world, for the welfare of the holy Church of God, and for the unity of all peoples, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

For Justin, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Michael, our Presiding Bishop, Andrew, Allen, and Mary, our own Bishops, and for all the clergy and people, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

For Donald, our President, Andrew, our Governor, Bill, our Mayor, for the leaders of the nations, and for all in authority, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, have mercy.

For this city, for every city and community, and for those who live in them, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

For the good earth which God has given us, and for the wisdom and will to conserve it, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

For the aged and infirm, for the widowed and orphans, and for the sick and the suffering, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

For the poor and the oppressed, for the unemployed and the destitute, for prisoners and captives, and for all who remember and care for them, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

For all who have died in the hope of the resurrection, and for all the departed, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

For deliverance from all danger, violence, oppression, and degradation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

That we may end our lives in faith and hope, without suffering and without reproach, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

In the communion of the Blessed Virgin Mary, holy mother of God, Blessed Luke, our patron and of all the saints, let us commend ourselves, and one another, and all our life, to Christ our God.To you, O Lord our God.

The Celebrant concludes with a Collect.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION OF SIN

Deacon Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

All say Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Celebrant says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

THE PEACE

Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you.People And also with you.

The Celebrant says an Offertory sentence.

OFFERRTORY ANTHEMHeinrich Schütz (1585-1672)

SEASON AFTER PENTECOST 9

The Lord is my Shepherd,I will lack nothing. He pastures me in a green fieldand leads me to fresh water; He refreshes my soul.He leads me on the right paths for His Name’s sake. And although I have wanderedIn the dark valley,I feared no misfortune;for You are with me,your rod and staff comfort me.You prepare a table for mein front of my enemies; You annoint my head with oil,and bestow gifts to me abundantly.Goodness and mercy will followme my whole life,And I will remain in the house of the Lord forever.

10 SEASON AFTER PENTECOST

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Eucharistic Prayer A, The Book of Common Prayer, p. 361

The Celebrant continues: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For you are the source of light and life; you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name.

SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS Hymnal S129Robert Powell

SEASON AFTER PENTECOST 11

The Celebrant continues. Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and PeopleChrist has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

The Celebrant concludesWe celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREADThe Celebrant breaks the bread. A short period of silence follows.

Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Parish IntercessionsPersons listed below are prayed for weekdays by name at the 6:15pm Eucharist and on other occasions through-out the week. Due to the large need, the list is kept to family, loved ones, and close friends of parishioners only; names remain on the list for one month (six months for chronic illness). An additional list, circulated electron-ically to the intercessory prayer group only, is maintained for private concerns and for a wider circle of concern that may include parish members’ acquaintances, loved ones of close friends, etc. All of the names on the printed list and the electronic list are prayed for regularly by members of the Intercessory Prayer Group. Parish members are encouraged to incorporate this list into their own devotions. To add a name to either prayer list, to provide an update, to express a need for ongoing prayer beyond one month, or to have a name removed from the list, please e-mail [email protected] or call Fr.
