Dear Friends,

The Colonies of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, sat on the outer edge of a booming plantation complex that stretched across the

Caribbean and drew heavily on that colorful region for much of its cultural and economic life. Colonists were mesmerized by the sugar revolution that transformed culinary habits in the Atlantic world, created the most expensive real estate in the British Empire.

The beauty of the British Virgin Islands was not lost on "gentlemen of fortune." Many of the hidden bays and sheltered coves were discovered by famous privateers of this era, such as Christopher Newport, John Smith, and Sir Walter Raleigh, all of whom played a key role in the formation of the Colony of Virginia.

From the Great Houses of Barbados (George Washington’s home and St. Nicholas Abbey) to Alexander Hamilton and Nevis, we will journey to islands with rich historical treasures, azure waters, breathtaking beaches and lush rainforests, aboard the small and luxuriously appointed Silver Wind (296-passenger, all-suite ship). We will explore San Juan, St. Bart’s, Nevis and St. Kitts, Dominica, Tobago, Granada, St. Lucia and Barbados.

On the journey we will be accompanied by beloved CNU history professor, Dr. Phil Hamilton, a widely published expert on the American Revolutionary and

Early Republican periods. Each evening, Dr. Hamilton will offer insightful presentations about Virginia’s colonial connection to this colorful region that was so essential to America’s formation, growth and commerce and helped to bring our nation to independence.

Rosemary and I hope our most treasured Christopher Newport friends will be with us on this, our next unforgettable CNU travel adventure!

Best Wishes,Paul Trible

The word “is out” about this stunning journey and many CNU friends are taking advantage of the free roundtrip airfare only available before May 31, 2018. So, please don’t delay in making reservations.

March 3, 2019 - Embarkation SAN JUAN Until the eighteenth century, Spain ignored Puerto Rico in favor of its mainland colonies, preferring to gear its fragile economy to the production of coffee and cattle rather than sugar. As the Caribbean became a cockpit for naval

warfare during the 1700s, the island became an increasingly important military outpost. The French, English, and Dutch made numerous, but unsuccessful, attempts to conquer the island. To guard against these incursions, the Spanish constructed the many forts and ramparts still found. During the American Revolution, Puerto Ricans fought in Florida and participated in the capture of Pensacola from the British.

March 4, 2019 -GUSTAVIA, ST. BARTHELEMYThe abundant coastal beauty and marine life of St. Bart’s attracts boaters from every corner of the world. A volcanic

island only ten miles square and lacking fertile land, St. Barthelemy was colonized in 1763 by French mariners from Normandy and Brittany bent on privateering. Twenty-one years later, Louis XVI gave the island to Sweden in exchange for the rights to conduct trade in the largest port in Swedish waters.

March 5, 2019 -CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS Nevis is one of the most unspoilt and relaxing islands in the Caribbean. Vividly green with blue skies, clean air and long empty beaches, Nevis has a pace of life that

encourages you to stop and appreciate all the natural beauty around you. On Nevis one can explore the historical sites that formed the early world of a young Alexander Hamilton, as well as taking a close look at

the remains of the island's mixed plantation legacy. Step back in time as Fairview Great House provides a true representation of a colonial great house.

March 6, 2019 - ROSEAU, DOMINICAJoin us for a deeper look at the colonial history of this beautiful, mountainous island as we welcome Dr. Lennox Honychurch, considered the region’s foremost expert in Dominican archeology and colonial history of Dominica and its political and trading links with the North American colonies and the future United States of America. Historic

sites include Morne Bruce Garrison which played a part in the French involvement with the War of Independence; Canefield Old Mill owned by British settlers and during the late 18th and 19th centuries produced sugar, rum and molasses.

March 7, 2019 SCARBOROUGH, TOBAGO Pigeon Point Heritage Park, Tobago's only protected marine park, features some of the island's most beautiful coral reefs and beaches. Visit Tobago's scenic landmarks and plantations, driving on the Windward Road through stunning mountain scenery. See miles of pristine beaches, quaint coastal villages and a 10th-century sugar plantation

as well as Fort King George. Stop in Charlottesville, a small fishing village, and enjoy the views of Pigeon Peak, the island's tallest mountain.

March 8, 2019 - ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADASt. George’s, the 'Isle of Spice', is renowned for its splendid beauty, vistas and historic estates. Nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, cocoa -- those heady aromas fill the air in Grenada (pronounced gruh-nay-da). Only 21 miles (33½ km) long and 12 miles (19½ km) wide, the Isle of Spice is a tropical gem of lush rain forests, white-sand beaches, secluded

coves, exotic flowers, and enough locally grown spices to fill anyone's kitchen cabinet. Historic sites include Belmont Estate, Dougaldston Estate, Gouyave Nutmeg Factory, 'Carib Leap', 18th-century River Antoine Rum Distillery, and Grand Etang, a volcanic lake.

March 9, 2019 - CASTRIES, ST. LUCIAWith a lush interior featuring towering mountains, dense rainforest, fertile valleys, and acres of banana plantations, St. Lucia is mostly distinguished by the Pitons—twin peaks that soar high above the ocean floor on the southwest coast. St. Lucia is the sort of island that travelers to the Caribbean dream about--a small, lush tropical gem that is still relatively unknown.

March 10, 2019 - BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS Since European settlement almost 400 years ago, Bridgetown became a major port for the shipment of goods, including sugar, and enslaved people in the British Atlantic World. Bridgetown’s irregular settlement patterns and early 17th century street layout reflect the medieval influence of early English settlers on town planning. Its

spontaneous development and serpentine street layout supported the development and transformation of creolized forms of tropical architecture in a European style.

Join us as we meet Dr. Karl Watson (considered an authority on Barbadian influence on the development of the American Colonies), Peter Stevens (President of the Barbados National Trust), and again, our mentor Dr. Lennox Honychurch. Together we’ll explore the Great Houses and Historic Sites that made Barbados such a pivotal player in the development of Colonial America.

Christopher Newport University participants will have exclusive access to the following optional tours and private dinners in Barbados:

• Dinner at Lancaster Great House

• Dinner at George Washington’s House with George Washington

• St Nicholas Abbey Private Tour and Dinner

Dinner at Lancaster Great House A historic Barbadian plantation residence, Lancaster House is renowned for both its colonial charm and iconic boutique meals set in the period-style home outfitted with

antiques. Set among mature mahogany and fruit trees, and tucked in between beautiful gardens, dinner at the Lancaster Home is the perfect welcome to an incredible island.

Dinner with George Washington at George Washington’s House Spend dinner by candlelight with our private expert on Barbadian history, as we gain even more insight as to Barbados in the mid-eighteenth century. Tonight we’ll start with a brief cocktail reception followed by a tour of the home, then gather in the dining room for a multi-course dinner with a string quartet performing period pieces.

Tour George Washington's House and TunnelsThe George Washington House is the only house outside

the USA where George Washington ever resided. The young George Washington and his ailing brother, Lawrence, resided in this historic plantation house, also known as

Bush Hill House, for two months in 1751. The handsome Georgian-style house has been restored and furnished as a typical, but not luxurious, plantation residence of the mid-18th Century.

St. Nicholas Abbey Tour and Dinner St. Nicholas Abbey's great house, built by Benjamin Berringer in 1658, is one of just three Jacobean style mansions remaining in the Western Hemisphere, and one of the finest historic sites in Barbados.

Hunte’s Garden Visit Situated in the center of Barbados’ rainforest, at the end of old Castle Grant Plantation where sugar cane used to be processed, Hunte’s garden will be sure to excite

even the most seasoned gardener. The garden offers a multidimensional experience with lush gardens, towering trees, and flowering plants all coupled with indigenous birds calling out and flying through the garden.
