In this issue:

For a year now, Florence Christian has been seeking God’s

guidance and wisdom in determining our present and fu-

ture ministries. Over the last year, we have affirmed our

“Why”—our purpose or mission as a church: Celebrating

God’s Welcome Table of Abundant Love, Grace and Ac-

ceptance. We also were able, through a series of gather-

ings and self-studies, articulated and affirmed our “How”—

our Core Values to Welcome Radically, Serve Boldly, and

Form Faith Every Day.

And now we are ready, with those clearly defined state-

ments of mission and core values in place to inform and

give us a strong foundation, to begin the exciting work of

determining “What” we will do as we begin road mapping

the future of our ministry together!

Our Vibrant Faith coach, Jim Ladoux, will assist us in this

vital process of road mapping August 18-20. The schedule

will be as follows:

Leadership Dinner and Meeting—Friday at 6:00 p.m.

in the Well. Pastors, Members of the Board and

Elders will meet with Jim to review the process and

offer input. Reservations required for the dinner.

Please call the church office at 859-647-5000, ext.

Form Faith Road Mapping—Saturday from 10 a.m.-

Noon in the Well. Team leaders and members in-

volved with adults, youth and children’s faith for-

mation ministries are encouraged to attend.

Welcome Radically Road Mapping—Saturday from 1-

3 p.m. in the Well. Team leaders and members

involved in the areas of hospitality, worship, office

and evangelism ministries are encouraged to at-

tend.

Serve Boldly Road Mapping—Saturday from 4-6 p.m.

in the Well. Team leaders and members involved in

the areas of outreach and mission ministries are

encouraged to attend.

Leadership Luncheon—Sunday at noon in the Well.

Pastors, Executive Officers of the Board, Team

Leaders and Elders will meet to receive report and

feedback from Jim as we determine our next steps.

This assessment has three compo-

nents:

A few general demographic ques-

tions

The Living Compass Adult Wellness

Self-Assessment where individuals

scale themselves on 80 statements

related to 8 areas of wellness.

Completing the Wellness Assessment

for Congregations will provide benefit

for both the individual completing it,

as well as for the congregation.

Benefits for the Individual: Each per-

son completing the Wellness Assess-

ment for Congregations will receive

immediate, confidential results of his

or her current state of balance and

wellness. Only the individual taking the

assessment will see these personal re-

sults. These results will help the indi-

vidual make decisions about his or her

wellness, including what wellness pro-

grams that he or she might like to at-

tend when they are offered.

Benefits for the Congregation: The

congregation will benefit from the

completion of the Wellness Assess-

ment for Congregations because it will

gain important data that will help its

leaders plan future wellness programs.

The congregation’s leaders will receive

the aggregate scores of the self-

assessment along with the results of

interest survey for various wellness

topics. The congregation’s leaders will

never know who took the assessment,

nor will they ever be to see any individ-

ual’s responses.

Please take the survey to guide you in

your journey to wellness and to pro-

vide important data for Florence Chris-

tian to program this Year of Whole-

ness.

Did you know…

the restroom in the Office Wing is

equipped with a shower. Folks living in

Boone County who are experiencing

homelessness frequent Florence Chris-

tian for a shower, a small bag of non-

perishable food and sometimes a $5

gas card or TANK bus pass. Since it’s

gotten hot, about 8-10 people come by

in a week for a shower. These are great

resources we can offer our community.

Our guests often ask for razors, deodorant, toothbrushes

and toothpaste. Please consider donating a few of these

toiletries. Leave donations in the bin by the office door.

Interesting Carbon Footprint Chart!

“Many commonly promoted op-

tions, such as washing clothes in

cold water or swapping incandes-

cent bulbs for light-emitting di-

odes, have only a moderate impact

(see chart, below), the team reports

today in Environmental Research

Letters. But four lifestyle choices

had a major impact: Become a veg-

etarian, forego air travel, ditch your

car, and—most significantly—

have fewer children.

Despite the effectiveness of these four measures, nei-

ther the textbooks in Canadian schools nor government

reports or websites in the European Union, the United

States, Canada, or Australia highlight these choices,

possibly because most of them require such extreme

changes in lifestyle.” 2017 American Association for the

ORDINATION

August 27, 2017, 4:00 p.m.

There are few times in the life of

a congregation that are more

sacred than when “one of our

own” is ordained to the Chris-

tian ministry. Elizabeth “Lizzy”

Diop, who grew up in the Flor-

ence Christian Church family,

pursued her theological educa-

tion at Christian Theological

Seminary, where she graduated

and began serving in the Chaplaincy ministry as she contin-

ued her CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) at Children’s Hospi-

tal. She has been under the care of the Christian Church in

Kentucky’s regional Commission on the Ministry, where she

was approved for ordination earlier this year. The Board of

Florence Christian Church unanimously voted to sponsor her

ordination and a team has been working on the celebration

for the past four months.

The service of ordination will be held on Sunday, August 27 at

4:00 p.m. A reception in Lizzy’s honor will be held following

the ordination. We hope all of you will come and be a part of

this high and holy moment in Lizzy’s life!

Children Worship & Wonder

Sundays, 9:00 AM & 10:30 AM – Ages 4-7

Children Worship & Wonder is a very special worship experience designed for younger chil-

dren. It is influenced by Montessori ideas and creates a welcoming environment to grow in rela-

tionship with God through ritual, telling our sacred stories, and providing ways for

the children to develop their theological imagination. Children are invited to leave the sanctuary

after the children’s blessing and are escorted to the Children’s Worship Center in the Atrium.

Parents are invited to reunite with their children after the close of worship outside the Children’s

Worship Center in the Atrium.

Kid’s Quest - Sundays, 9 AM and 10:30 AM for ages 8-13

Kid’s Quest is a special worship experience for our older children in an environment of

worship leadership and learning. It incorporates the same scripture as in “Big Church”

and provides children ways to interactively engage with the scripture lesson and the

worship experience. Children are invited to leave the sanctuary during the children’s

blessing and are escorted to the chapel or atrium. After the conclusion of their activi-

ties, they are escorted back into the sanctuary to rejoin their families for communion.

Sunday worship is when all of us gather as the people of

God to praise God, to connect with God and each other.

At Florence Christian Church we encourage children to

music and opening prayer in a Children’s Blessing, one of

the Pastors and the congregation bless the children to con-

It’s that time of year again where we will be saying

goodbye to some of the children we have had since

infancy. Each year as the end of summer approaches

we face this time with mixed emotions.

The new school year is an exciting as well because we

meet new families and enroll new children. The excite-

ment doesn’t stop there! Additionally, many of the cur-

rent children will move into a new classroom for the

next year.

Our Preschool and Pre-K programs begin Sept. 11,

2017. We are excited to begin another year of molding

children and teaching them fundamentals of early edu-

cation.

We also offer an enrichment program for children who

attend ½ day kindergarten at nearby schools. This pro-

gram enhances the fields of learning and equips them

to be much more skilled and confident in their educa-

tion.

We are currently accepting fall enrollment. For further

information please contact our office at

As a welcome and outreach ministry of

children discover their world in a nurturing, safe,

Christian environment.

Thank You!

We thank you for your contribution of $450 in 2017 to both

the General and Food for Thought programs.

We’re in the midst of summer and the warehouse volunteers

are feeling the heat! Action Ministries depends on 150 volun-

teers every month in many ways throughout the ministries. All

the work they do is necessary to provide grocery items to the

more than 1000 families, as well as other agencies and schools

we serve every month. Volunteers pick up donated groceries,

sort and store those groceries in the warehouse, prepare bags

for clients, greet clients and assist them with their groceries

and toiletries, work in the office processing data and answer-

ing the ever-ringing phone, and deliver groceries to home-

bound seniors. Action Ministries is an impressive operation

made possible in God’s Will by the many, many volunteers and

donors who support us. We are humbled by the fact that Flor-

ence Christian has chosen us as an agency you want to sup-

port financially.

If you would like to a hands-on part of the Action Ministries

team, please call 859-261-3649 and learn how you can get in-

Bible Milestone Presentations

Sunday, August 20th

As a part of our commitment to

lifelong faith formation, we present

children and youth Bibles at differ-

ent milestones in their lives. Each

Bible is especially designed to fulfill

the faith and developmental stage

through which they are journeying.

Bibles are typically presented when

children and youth transition to

different worship experiences or at other points in their

lives such as when a young child transitions into Worship

& Wonder or into Kid’s Quest. Join us for this special cel-

ebration in the lives of our children and youth! If you be-

lieve that your child is reaching a milestone or has joined

the church within the last year, please fill out a quick sur-

vey: https://goo.gl/forms/ToMsWmRpyWoEiYsY2

Cane Ridge Day

On Saturday, June 24, several members of Florence Christian

Church went to Cane Ridge in Bourbon County Kentucky for

the annual Cane Ridge Day. The meeting was started with

an old fashion gathering in song followed by special music

by David Edwards. The morning speaker was James Taylor

who spoke on some of the early church leaders. We learned

that President John Garfield was a Disciples of Christ Minis-

ter. The only President who was a licensed Minister.

Lunch was at the tables on the grounds with music to eat

by. There was time to tour the museum also.

The afternoon speaker was Mark Sage filling in for Mel

Hankla who was ill. He spoke on the history of Kentucky.

The meeting was over around 3:30 PM. Everyone had a

spirit-filled, great day.
