There are several references (in the novel) to Onslow once being a ghost town. Why was it a ghost town (and what was once found there)?

Did you know:There really are two towns

named Onslow, further north in Western Australia, and one of those is also a

ghost town. The author saw a photo of the ghost town

and liked its name so much he used it here, but means

no disrespect to the real town.
