While Pastor Janet is on sabbatical the Executive Team has filled this space with news on some important updates here at First.
SEMINARY INTERN UPDATE AT FIRST: It is difficult to describe the current picture without sharing former circumstances. It is also difficult to choose what former circumstances to share without knowing who knows what. So please read on, nodding “I knew that” when it’s familiar, be ready to learn more when it is not, and feel welcomed to ask questions when any come to mind. 2016 - ’17: Vicar Preston became First Lutheran’s first seminary intern, followed by Vicar Fanya in 2017 - ’18. After two years of learning and growing together, perhaps some of us thought life at First would continue just like this. In preparation for 2018 - ’19, Pastor Janet and two First members interviewed several Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago (LSTC) seminarians in Spring, 2018, and Vicar Jessica arrived in August, moving into the Blessing House. However, Jessica decided that she was not going to continue studies toward ministry at this time and left First before the end of September.
After discussions with LSTC leadership, Pastor Janet and Council determined that there were no options for finding another intern at that time, and later reached the same conclusion for the second semester.
On February 19, 2019, Pastor Janet and First members were again interviewing LSTC seminarians for 2019 - ’20 internships and concluded that any one of the four seminarians interviewed would probably be a good fit at First.
Now would be a good time to re-read Pastor Janet’s letter in June’s First Word, which began, “I cannot begin to tell you how disappointed I was to learn that First Lutheran would not be receiving an intern from Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago for the coming year. We knew this was a possibility when we first entered into the program. Some years there are just more sites than students. Sometimes a clear match is not found between an internship site congregation and a student. This was one of those years. Note: Seminarians usually have several choices of congregation from which to choose, so this is always a possible outcome for interested congregations.
To quote a humorist about life’s ups and downs, “Sometimes there is nothing you can do, and in those times, you must do something anyway.” As many of you probably know from personal experience, or a story you’ve heard, Pastor Janet follows that suggestion. Specifically,

again from her June letter — “I put in a call to the Director of Contextual Education at Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque …, but all of their interns were already assigned.” And later “… Dr. Rachuy-Cox called me back and asked if we might consider being a Collaborative Learning Site for a student.” Essentially, a 4-year internship with one congregation, full -time seminary student online and half-time intern. Our Congregation Council agreed to move forward with this model, and a prospective Wartburg Seminar student chose First Lutheran for placement, to arrive in mid-August.
On Saturday, May 30th, Council President Roger Hopkins sent the following message to Council members: “Intern Candidate Megan informed Pr. Janet and I this morning that she will not be accepting our invitation to be her Collaborative Learning congregation. She is seeking a church closer to home (North Carolina). That is her primary reason, and she shared that she has had a number of conversations with family that led to her decision. There was nothing that we did or said that was a concern for her regarding our congregation — just separation concerns with family.” Mike Wadle announced an abbreviated version of Roger’s message before service on May 31st.
For the future, Council and Pr. Janet plan to seek another intern candidate to begin in the summer of 2020 and again we have no assurances – just faith that we will be blessed with a new opportunity. In the meantime, we will seek to enhance our participation with the new Pastor at Grace Place. (continued on page 4)
Pr. Janet, Council members, and the seminarian’s Support Team — including a Northern Illinois Synod representative, met on Friday afternoon, May 24th, for two hours online on ZOOM, dis-cussing the responsibilities, expectations, and coordination of each in the student/intern’s learning & growth, support & evalua-tion. At the end of the meeting, First’s Council approved moving forward with the identified candidate as the Collaborative Learn-ing Intern First Lutheran for 2019 - 2023. In Pr. Janet’s words, “First Lutheran has a chance to make a significant difference in shaping the pastoral identity of a student over the next several years. Together we have the gifts to do so in a wonderful way. We shall see where God is leading with all of this, but I am very hopeful about what this may look like for us together.”

UPDATE
Expectations were for our BH to be home for Vicar Jessica for 12 months, but she chose to leave after a month.
But even while no one’s name was on a long term “Agreement”, the House blessed three families, whose members received peace, soli-tude, and a space to share for several days each, when they gathered to watch over a sick relative, or to bid Farewell to a loved one lost.

As we have heard about the glass of water being seen as half full by some, and half empty by others, perhaps this is a good time to form a sense of perspective about First’s Blessing House (BH) — How does our Blessing House continue to be Blessed to Be a Blessing? Perhaps it’s important to remember First received the property from Dean Burgemeister only 28 months ago — not quite 2 years and 4 months — on March 7, 2017.
The first 6 months, March - July, were filled with 94 First Folks, Blessed in doing God’s Work with their hands & hearts, talents & wallets. When ready, Vicar Fanya and husband, Kendrick, moved in, receiving the Blessings of peace and shelter, a place to be Home while interning with First in DeKalb from August 2017 through July 2018.
So, of course, Pr. Janet again saw an opportunity to follow “Sometimes there is nothing you can do, and in those times, you must do something anyway.” You are invited to read about that in the Blessing House Update

NIU that used our building for their meeting place to
help families in the community. We will never know
what a simple gesture of allowing our space to be
used for a group like this, will make in someone’s life.

However — and we’ve certainly seen Pr. Janet keep her eyes, ears, and heart open for “however”— Pastor Mack Patrick, the once in-terviewee, has now been called to serve Grace Place. Pr. Mack interned at St. James, Rock Island, at the same time Pastor Preston interned with First. Contacts at St. James gave glowing recom-mendations re: Pr. Mack to our Council, which voted to offer an “Agreement” to Bless him for the period of July 25, 2019 — July 15, 2020 with a rent-free home. In return, Pr. Mack will pay utili-ties, mow the lawn and remove snow, and share a small part of his time and talents with First Lutheran, to include preaching on some Sundays. Further, Dean Burgemeister has blessed First Lutheran with a grant from his estate. Council expects to receive a memorial gift of ap-proximately $28,000, part received in June and the balance ex-pected later this year. After contemplation and input, Council has directed that the gift be distributed 10% to the Building Fund; 10% to the Endowment Funds; 10% to the Synod; and to establish the remaining 70% as an ongoing Memorial Fund the maintain the Blessing House. There remains to be the tasks of paving the drive-way and resolving some basement water issues, and the future eventuality of other repairs, maintenance, etc.
We give thanks for the Blessing House and continue to care for it and prepare it for its next Blessing.
In recent weeks: 1. A candidate for Pastor of Grace Place on NIU’s campus, was Blessed with an overnight stay, saving him from late night travel or the expenses of a hotel. 2. A guest preacher at Salem spent 2 nights. 3.Bethlehem Lutheran coordinated with First for the Rev. Bavani R.Joseph, a retired Lutheran pastor from India, to be Blessed with a couple short stays in our BH while visiting Bethlehem and N. IL Synod. Meanwhile, plans for housing anoth-er LSTC seminary intern from August 2019-July 2020 were devel-oping, then morphed into a 4-year plan for a Wartburg seminary iintern from August 2019-July 2023. Sadly, neither of those will come to fruition (see update on seminary intern)

APRIL’S NOISY OFFERING:UPDATE Textbooks for Tanzania Lutheran High
Schools.
Greetings from the Mwangaza Teachers Cen-
tre. We are exceedingly honored for the contin-
ued concern about education in Tanzania by the
members of First Lutheran Church in DeKalb. We
are delighted to let you know that your $510.83 Noisy Offer-
ing will enable Mwangaza to support three
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT) High
Schools. We shall buy the books as soon as the funds reach
our office. We will also share photos of schools
receiving the books. Asante sana (Thank you very

Mike: $510 could buy about 65 textbooks
as they are small and paperback.
Each book might be shared by 3 students,
so 20 books would be enough for a class of 60 students at
each of the 3 schools. The books could be used by 2 clas-
ses (or more) in one day. The books from April’s Noisy Offer-
ing could be used by at least 360 Lutheran High School stu-

Pastor Dennis Heaney’s Ordination and the 40th anniversary
of Pastor Ernie Rex’s ordination. Please join us to celebrate
these milestones in their lives. There will be cake:)

FIRST’S MENS’ FURNITURE MOVING MINISTRY is currently the only Team regularly delivering furniture to
Love INC clients and picking up furniture from donors each
month. We are fortunate to be joined most times by Rich
from Harvest Bible Chapel, who has a truck to pull one of
the trailers — and he’s strong! We are usually trying to run
2 crews, each with a truck & trailer and 4 or more
men. We encourage you to choose one of the 3rd Satur-
day mornings, from 9:00 to noon, in July through October, as
an opportunity to try this version of God’s Work with Your
Hands on for size, while spending a few hours getting to know
& share with some First Men-bers and Rich. Mike promises to
(try to) schedule good weather.

or 2. you can purchase either Gatorade Fuel Bars or
Gatorade Chews. Please restrict any purchases to the
Gatorade brand of these 2 products, as many “bars” on
store shelves do not have the same nutritional value.

JULY RECIPIENT OF NOISY OFFERING New Hope Back To School Project
We're helping our friends at New Hope Baptist Church in DeKalb with their Back To School Supply Drive. Money donated will go to New Hope to purchase new school supplies for children, which will be handed out at their Back to School Event in August.

Part of First Lutheran’s Synod contribution was partially ($1,500) directed to the Northern Illinois Synod Assembly offering this year to be designated for “Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA.” This five-year campaign of the ELCA seeks to raise $198 million in support of new and expanded churchwide ministries around the world. Gifts will help the ELCA grow in communities of faith, form new leaders, welcome our neighbors, overcome malar-ia, confront hunger and poverty, accompany our global churches, and so much more. SYNOD ASSEMBLY HIGHLIGHTS Our delegates for Synod Assembly this year were Bob Johnson, Mike and Sharon Wadle . Highlights from the Assembly held at Augustana College which include not only photos but video of many of the different sessions can be found at http://assembly.nisynod.org/highlights/ . You should see many folks that are familiar .You can see a video of Dennis Heaney as he is recognized for 50 years of ordained ministry. You can also see the presentations by special guest and keynote speaker Rev. Dr. Anna Madsen. The Wadles thought she was excellent! They encourage you to take a look at these videos.
4th Tuesday-Ladies Day Out You are invited to join other women from the church at for Ladies Day out. We will meet next on Tuesday, July 23 at Noon. We will go to Grubsteakers in Rochelle for lunch. Carpooling will be availa-ble. These meals are based on the simple concept that it is enjoyable to g together for an time of fellowship with our sisters in Christ. Blood Pressure Readings The American Heart Association has new
guidelines as to what is considered normal
or abnormal. Normal blood pressure
readings on the systolic number (the top
number) should be less than 120. The
diastolic number (the bottom number)
should be less than 80 to be considered
normal. Elevated blood pressure reading for the systolic number is
between 120-129 and the diastolic number is less than 80. People
with elevated blood pressure are likely to develop high blood
pressure unless steps are taken to control it. To
be in the high blood pressure range (Stage 1), the
systolic reading is between 130-139 and the
diastolic reading is between 80-89. At this stage
of high blood pressure, doctors are likely to
prescribe lifestyle changes and may consider
adding blood pressure medication. Hypertension
(Stage 2), the systolic reading is 140 or higher and
the diastolic reading is 90 or higher. At this stage of high blood
pressure, doctors are likely to prescribe a combination of blood
pressure medications along with lifestyle changes. A hypertensive
crisis occurs when the systolic reading is higher than 180 and the
diastolic reading is higher than 120. If your readings are in the
hypertensive crisis stage, contact your doctor immediately! If you
are experiencing shortness of breath, chest pain or numbness or
weakness, do not wait! Call 911. Systolic blood pressure indicates
how much pressure you blood is exerting against your artery walls
when your heart beats. Diastolic blood pressure indicates how much
pressure your blood is exerting against your artery walls while the
heart is resting between beats. (American Heart Association review
as of November 2017) First Lutheran offers blood pressure
screenings twice a month by our Parish Registered Nurses. You are
welcome and encouraged to use this free service! We are mentioned
in the bulletin on those Sundays after church. We have a sign
indicating where we will do the screenings. Usually it is in the
community room or the library.

We’ve been blessed with 50 free admission tickets to the Brookfield Zoo and are planning a day in July or August for animal lovers of all ages to meet and spend the day together. Keep your eyes and ears open for announcements in worship, email, and Facebook! Give Deb Farnsworth a call in the office if you’d like to help with planning this event!
LOOKING AHEAD… It seems so far away, but with family vacations, sports, and other demands on families, we are al-ready working on a fall calendar for Sunday School and youth activities. Please consider if your fall and winter 2019 plans leave room for sharing your time and gifts as a Sunday School teacher or occasional chaperone for youth events. Most of God’s work happens in relationships, and you have more to offer than you might think!
LWR KIDS DAY– Wednesday, July 17th School children are invited to come to R Mission Center (on the second floor behind the Music Room) to help with LWR Projects. Come anytime between 9am. and 4pm. Stay for a little while or the entire time. Bring a sack lunch if you can stay through the noon hour. Beverages will be provided. Work with experienced quilt and kit makers as you enjoy another summer activity and learn more about Lutheran World Relief. If you have questions, contact Bev Hea-ney 815-748-7124.
Check out our church library for some “cool” books and movies for kids when the weather is just too hot and kids are bored. Invite a friend or two to join you .

We had a great week exploring the question, “Who is My Neighbor?” in the parable of the Good Samaritan during our June VBS at Walcamp. We give thanks for the 56 campers, 18 junior leaders, 14 small group leaders and many others who helped prepare crafts, set up and later packed up our camp area, led games, Bible stories, and music. LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF (LWR) WORK TIMES IN JULY
There are 3 opportunities this month to be apart of LWR Mission work days. July 3, 17 and 31. Come to R Mission Center (on the nsecond floor behind the Music Room) between 9a.m. and 4 p.m. Stay as long as your schedule permits. Bring a sack lunch if you can stay through the noon hour. No experience necessary. On the job training provided. Good fellowhip and coffee break included!!! July 3– First Lutheran leads worship at Oak Crest at 2:00 p.m. Those interested in joining residents will leave the church at 1:30 p.m. July 17– KIDS DAY_ School age childen are invited to join in making quilts and assembling kits. July 31– 5th Wednesday Bonus Work Time

who are finding many treasures for Mision Quilts (bedding, yard good,
crochet thread, curtains) and Baby Care Kits (sleepers, t-shirts, jacketrs, sweters
and sweat shirts with or without hoods in sizes 6 to 24 months). Keep up the good work! A complete list of needed items is available at R Donation Center in the Atrium near the doors to
the Social Hall.
LWR MISSION /WORK TRIP THANK YOU Thank you, people and Church Council of First Lutheran, for your encouragement, support and prayers for our fifth annual Lutheran World Relief mission/work trip, April 27-May 4. Thirteen people (eight from 1st: Barbara Anderson, Barbara Baie, Beverly and Dennis Heaney, Bruce and Pat Mason, Lucile Reynen and Sharon Williams-2 from Salem,, Sycamore, 2 from St. John’s Somonauk, and 1 from Our Savior Savior, Bradley) traveled to Maryland to spend the week helping prepare relief materials and packing LWR Personal Care, School, Baby Care, and Fabric Kits for overseas shipment from the warehouse at New Windsor. It was a dilgent and hard-working crew who packed thousands of kits! We repacked donated boxes of kits from Lutheran congregations all over the US, and put the kits into uniform containers for overseas shipping. When not working, we enjoyed good fellowship, devotional life, playing games, and some sightseeing. A half day was spent in Baltimore visiting with national staff of LWR and Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services. Of course, good seafood was of great delight! Thank you to those who participated in this step of the worldwide mission outreach of our church….and start thinking about next year-the dates are April 18-24, 2020.
