HELP US CELEBRATE!!
THE DAY OF PENTECOST
MAY 14, 2017
ALL ARE INVITED TO WEAR RED AND
BRING A RED FLOWERING PLANT FOR OUR
CELEBRATION
May 15
Dear Friends in Christ,
Alleluia, Christ is Risen! There are signs of the Resurrection all
around us in the blooming flowers, the budding trees, and in the
lives and ministries of First Lutheran. Every week, I witness the
life-giving impact of your generosity as we hand out lunches to
students and staff at NIU.
Believe it or not, it has been six months since we started this
ministry. Through sunny days, cold days, rainy and snowy days,
our volunteers have been a consistent presence on NIU campus.
By the end of the semester, this community will have made and
distributed over 2,000 individual lunches and exam survival packs.
That’s 2,000 turkey or peanut butter sandwiches assembled by our
volunteers, 2,000 times a student has received a small note of
encouragement from First Lutheran and Grace Place Campus
Ministry.
Over 35% of NIU students face food insecurity during the school
year, often having to choose between tuition and book costs and a
meal. Many of the students work almost full-time hours at local
businesses while also taking full class loads. The truth is that it is
nearly impossible to work your way through college these days and
not take on significant debt. Dropping down to part-time classes is,
counterintuitively, often the more expensive option, as many
student grants and scholarships are only available to full-time
students. While we might not be able to fix our broken higher
education system, we can be cheerleaders as these students fight for
their education and opportunity.
Beyond the students, we have also stumbled upon another
vulnerable population in need of ministry. Many of the staff at
NIU are struggling to make ends meet, especially as their jobs ebb
and flow with the NIU academic calendar. It all started with one
bus driver whom I began handing a lunch to between red lights on
the corner. After a few weeks she handed me a note, thanking us
for our ministry and sharing that she was currently going through
cancer treatments and trying to make ends meet. These Monday
lunches was one meal a week she could count on. “You all are truly
acting in Jesus’ name and an answer to a prayer”, she said. Now we
routinely have visitors from the transportation staff on campus.
As this semester comes to a close, it will be time for our

community to assess this ministry and decide whether or not First
Lutheran would like to continue this next fall. If the answer is
yes, we need someone to take leadership of this ministry when
my internship ends in July. If you are interested in coordinating
this ministry, please let me know.
Sometimes we proclaim the Resurrection of Christ in choir
anthems and altar flowers, sometimes we proclaim Resurrection
one peanut butter and jelly at a time. Either way, keep
proclaiming the good news, First Lutheran!
Christ is Risen, indeed! Alleluia!

CAROL STUBBS update: This is Now, that was Then. “I’ve
actually never seen this before”, said the nurse on April
17th when reporting that Carol’s biopsy report showed the
cancer was 0%. Checked after arriving at Milwaukee’s Frodert
Hospital on February 20th, Carol’s first biopsy report showed
the cancer was 30%. This means that the autologous (from your
own body) stem cell transplant is a go. Preparatory tests and
harvesting Carol’s own stem cells will be April 20-27. Full
days, but all done as an out-patient. Randy Stubbs

VOLUNTEERS
NEEDED!!!
Behind the scenes:
• Two Food Teams: a morning team
and another to show up at 1:00 PM
Theater with cold treats for the show. • Two Clean-up crews: one to unload everything at the
church on Friday; I will stay behind at Walcamp with the
junior leaders for their retreat, and another to help organize
and clean-up gear and supplies the following week At Camp: • Eight adult house leaders who will each be paired with two
junior leaders to guide their Roman “house” of
approximately 10 children through their camp experience • Acoustic guitar player to assist in worship at camp first
thing each morning and at the picnic on Friday at noon • People who are willing to “ham it up” and have fun
performing a skit in the amphitheater one or more
afternoons from 1:00 - 1:30. • A games leader and assistant who will have fun leading
“Roman” games and activities in 4 - 25 minute blocks
each morning between 9:30 and 11:30. A curriculum will
be provided as a starting point for planning games. • A Marketplace Team of one plus assistant or two who will
lead Roman – themed artisan skills — such as leatherwork
and woodworking. No planning required – all supplies will
be ready in advance, but you will need to take each days’
bin to and from camp. Contact Deb: 815-758-0643 or [email protected]

2017 VisionWalk
It’s VisionWalk time again,
believe it or not, and I am asking
for your support in this, my 11th
consecutive year of
participation. During the first 10
years of the Event our Team has
raised just under $750,000 for
research that, I assure you, is
making a difference. Our goal is
to move success in the laboratory into what we call human clinical trials. As I
write this there are over 20 of these trials ongoing, several of them directly
focusing on retinitis pigmentosa, the eye disease I have. One of those trials,
taking place at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical
Center in Boston, is of particular interest to me…I am one of the nine
participants.
My surgery took place on September 29, 2016 and the trial observation period
is a full year. I was in Boston very recently, on March 27, for my six month
follow-up appointment and, so far, everything is going well.
I have prepared a video more fully explaining the specifics of the Boston
clinical trial, including the various appointments, surgical procedure and other
things designed to give you an “inside look” at how this trial has worked. If
you want to watch the video please go to this link:
https://youtu.be/9juGZE8G_eU
It is very important that we continue to keep on with the fight. While I, and
countless others who have lost their vision, wish that the science and clinical
trials would move faster and with more success, the reality is that science
never moves fast enough and a very small percentage of human clinical trials
have the same results achieved in the lab on animals. Ten years ago when I
participated in my first VisionWalk there were less than 5 clinical trials taking
place so, by comparison, we have advanced by leaps and bounds. Your
continued commitment to the Foundation Fighting Blindness, and me, is
critical to ongoing success and deeply appreciated.
Please join me by donating whatever amount you are able. You may do this
online by going to this link:
http://www.fightblindness.org/goto/donatejohncorneille
If you prefer to donate by check, please make it payable to the Foundation
Fighting Blindness and mail it to me at 5447 Butternut Circle, Minnetonka,
MN, 55343.
Thank you so very much.

Garage Sale Thanks
Please pass on to the ladies at First Lutheran, A BIG THANK YOU on the
generous donation of $3,123.97 to help support Tanzania and helping to bring
the ladies from India to our Triennial. NIS WELCA is so blessed to have the
support and I personally want them to know they are mentioned in
thanksgiving at our meetings. We would not have been able to meet our
commitment last year to Tanzania if it hadn’t been for those lovely bold Garage
Sale women!!! I hope you know also we would be lost without you.
I pray for a blessed Easter for all the ladies at First Lutheran and their
families!!!! Hugs,
Melanie Romano

First’s Moving Ministry Team Moving Ministry Math update: 12 men divided into 3 crews to
make 9 deliveries and 4 pick-ups of donations — some
of donated furniture pieces quickly became delivered furniture
pieces. In one case, because a queen bed and couch would not
fit up the stairs and into the client’s apartment, Team members
returned to the storage units, exchanged for twin beds and living
room chairs, and delivered after our hours were technically fin-
ished. Come join these committed and creative guys on the 3rd
Saturday morning of any month.

Easter Breakfast
Thanks to many helpful hands, we enjoyed fellowship and good food
after the Easter morning worship service. Youth members Max
Lange, Elliot Lange, Dylan Moore, Nathaniel Black, Raelyn
Colvin, and Ella Colvin helped with serving and clean-up. We are
grateful for those who donated delicious breakfast casseroles, muffins,
sausage, juice, and milk. Thanks also to Jim and Colleen Johnson
and youth families who helped in the kitchen!
Graduate Recognition Day May 7
First Lutheran will honor our 2017

will follow with cake and punch. The
Endowment Committee will recognize
each graduate who completes an
application form with a scholarship
during a post service reception in the Social Hall. Please take time
to attend and join in marking a momentous occasion for our church
youth: Ryan Burright, Hannah Clark, Travis deOliveira,
Morgan Karolus, J.C. Longeville, Ashlee Mecklenburg,

Sring Break Lock-In
Sixteen middle school
youth and their friends
participated in an all-night
lock-in at the church!
Thanks to all those who
donated munchies and
especially to those who
drove to the wall-climb in
Warrenville: Kelly Buhk,
Jenny Franzene, Vicar
Preston, and Pastor
Elizabeth from Bethlehem
Lutheran. Thanks also to
our all-night chaperones
Kelly Buhk and Lynnea
Laskowski from
Bethlehem Lutheran!
New member Ashley
Murcia shared her
artistic talent helping
youth prepare canvas
paintings depicting the
Bible stories for the
Easter Vigil.
At our midnight candlelight
devotion, Vicar Preston read the
story of the dry bones and invited
youth to be courageous in their
confirmation, to be the keepers
and tellers of the most sacred
stories; to breathe life into places
where people feel "dried up,"
unloved, and unseen.

‘R’ Mission Center Needs You! If you can use your hands, you can help make quilts on May 3 and 17,
when volunteers will gather upstairs to help assemble quilts for Lutheran
World Relief. Volunteers of all skill levels are
needed and appreciated!
Meeting on the first and third Wednesdays,
volunteers stop in for a short time or stay all day or
evening, working on tasks that always involve lots
of conversation and laughter. How wonderful to
know that that “God’s work, our hands” means that many around the
world will be provided with comfort and shelter because we met to make
these quilts.
You can also help provide cash for shipping, or needed materials: New
fabric (yard good of any size) ;Drapes and curtains (no sheers or
fiberglass);Blankets,bedspreads, mattress pads, sheets, pillowcases;Quilt
batting ; Good quality sewing thread; Crochet or similar cord for tying
It’s important that all of these items be clean and in good condition.
Please leave donations in the basket in the atrium. Thank you!
Lutheran World Relief
If it’s May, it’s time to bring in full-size bars of soap!
During April we collected items for personal care kits to be
distributed through Lutheran World Relief. We
assembled 174 kits! Thank you for your
donations and help putting kits together!
This month, it’s soap. Keeping clean and
maintaining hygiene for good health is
challenging for those whose lives have been
disrupted by natural disasters, war, or poverty,
but our donations can help.
For the last several years we’ve been blessed to
be a blessing to those who need soap—and
we’ve also had fun seeing just how those bars of
soap stacked up! It’s also garage sale season, so those of you who collect items for
baby care kits have another place to shop! Remember to look for
items up to size 24 months, and no footed sleepers or onesies.
Please bring in full-size bars of soap in their original packaging,
and baby care kit items, and leave them in the atrium.
