The Finest Mexican Spirits
Pura Vida Spirits Companywww.PURAVIDA.mx
The History Of The Pura Vida Spirits CompanyThe story of Pura Vida, the world’s smoothest tequilas, dates back to 1923, where the Vivanco brothers worked the agave fields in the Highlands of Jalisco, the heart of Mexico’s finest agave-producing region. With the nurture of these vigilant Agaveros, the fields of beautiful blue agave in Los Altos earned international acclaim for exceptional quality, rich flavor, and high sugar content. Sugar is the lifeblood of tequila. Here, in the company of 4th generation Agaveros, the first expression of Pura Vida Tequila was brewing.
Enter Stewart Skloss, head honcho behind the Pura Vida empire. He’s a Texan through and through, born and raised— but from New York to London and Moscow to Kuwait, his passport weathers every part of the world. Stewart’s wanderlust lead to a jet-set lifestyle, but failed to quench a craving for something more. His love of Texas and Mexico took him back to his younger days with his amigos in Nuevo Laredo where they frequented the famed Cadillac Bar and drank the seductively satisfying Mexican elixir called tequila. One fateful day, while living in Guadalajara, Stewart and his amigos stopped in the town of Tequila for a two-hour sampling at one of the local distilleries. This started out as a simple tasting and turned into a two-day fiesta, fueling a fierce fire to follow his dream of one day making the finest tequila in the world.
While spending years traveling across Mexico in search of the ultimate tequila, or “El Primero Uno,” he learned all about what separates one tequila from another and about the importance of the purest, cleanest water in the process of crafting the finest spirit possible. Armed with this knowledge and experience, he joined forces with the Vivanco’s to develop the flavor profile for the first three expressions of Ultra-Premium Pura Vida Tequila. The wealth he amassed and friends made along the way created the perfect opportunity, preparing him to do exactly what he’d dreamed of for years: produce the “Primero Uno” for the world to enjoy. His years of scouring Mexico, diligently tasting every
type and style of tequila concluded, and his years of building and expanding his predestined tequila empire finally begun. All he needed now was a name for his ultimate creation.
Throughout his time in Mexico and Central America, Stewart came to know the phrase, “Pura Vida” as it’s used commonly in Costa Rica and surrounding areas as a kind of greeting; an affirmation of how good life can be. Translating to “Pure Life,” Pura Vida means much more than this and people often use it in a variety of positive ways to celebrate the joy of life. Stewart instantly knew this was the perfect name for his creation, and the perfect toast to those who live life to the fullest. To the good life, to the pure life, Pura Vida!
Upon returning the States, Stewart met up with longtime friend, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and tequila aficionado in his own right, ZZ Top’s Billy F. Gibbons. Stewart knew Billy shared his dream of “El Primero Uno” and when Stewart approached Billy with his creation, Billy told Stewart he’d given up on finding the perfect tequila, but for a friend would happily try it and give an honest opinion. The next day Billy jumped on board and the humble batch craft brand began its meteoric rise toward the nationwide spirits company known as Pura Vida Tequila today. As the company continued to expand and each expression gained award-winning recognition, Stewart knew he must carefully protect the original formulas and processes for these perfect flavor profiles. The five-stage water purification process and the highest sugar content pure blue agave in the land, both critical to the taste of each expression, found a new home in Pura Vida’s exclusive distillery, a state-of-the-art facility near beautiful Lake Chapala.
Born from a dream, Pura Vida Tequila now stands poised on the brink of greatness as it starts the newest chapter in the history of The Pura Vida Tequila Company. Join us in our passion for “El Primero Uno.” To the good life, to the pure life, Pura Vida!

Everyone knows margaritas come from Mexico, but blended into every authentic Mexican margarita is a secret ingredient: premium orange liqueur known in America simply as “NARANJA.” Distilled in Mexico since 1933, NARANJA is gentle and intense, warm and refreshing, bitter and sweet all at once. Known for its refined balance, it’s critical to a truly authentic margarita and perfect for mixing in a myriad of cocktails.
To understand the significance of NARANJA and its rich
Mexican history, we must look back to the creation of the first margarita in October 1941 at Hussong’s Cantina in
Ensenada, Mexico. One particularly slow afternoon, while Don Carlos Orozco was experimenting with mixing new drinks, a prestigious visitor arrived – Margarita Henkel, daughter of the German ambassador. Don Carlos offered his newest creation to Miss Margarita to taste and she loved it so much that he decided to name it “La Margarita” in her honor, as she was the first person ever to drink one. Legend has it, that inaugural margarita was little more than a mixture of equal parts tequila, NARANJA, and lime; shaken and served over ice in a salt-rimmed glass. The margarita gained popularity as the number one cocktail in the United States, with a loyal following that continues to grow internationally. NARANJA is the secret ingredient necessary for any authentic Mexican Margarita, and for nearly a century this premium orange liqueur was available only in Mexico. Now that the secret is out, thanks to Pura Vida Tequila Company, margarita lovers everywhere can make margaritas taste like they do in Mexico with NARANJA.
