Marion Tyack Whitfield

Marion Tyack Whitfield passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2015 at the age of 83.  Marion or "Ticky", as many called her, was born to the late Bryan and Marion Peters on April 16, 1931.

She grew up southwest of Tucson on the Fresnal Ranch (now the Elkhorn Ranch) which her parents moved to in the

1920s.  Although the ranch was a working cattle ranch, her father also ran a preparatory school for boys from the east coast.  While growing up on the ranch, Marion developed her love of riding horses and the outdoors.  She graduated from Brownmoor Boarding School

in Scottsdale in 1948 and went on to attend Mills College near San Francisco for two years.   Marion studied accounting and enjoyed various jobs utilizing these skills throughout her life.   She often enjoyed trying different career paths as well, her favorites probably being the times she was able to be a ranch hand in Texas and Wilcox.  Marion was an expert horsewoman who loved to ride and was a Tucson Rodeo princess in 1950.  She was also happy when gardening, sewing and traveling whether it was pulling her 5th wheel across the country or flying overseas.  Marion's true passion was being a community activist/volunteer.

When she moved to back to the Three Points area in the 1970s, she was often on the ground floor of community organizations such as the local 4-H club where over the years she served either as horse project leader or the community leader, The Three Points volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and was a director of the Three Points teen program.  Additionally, she

was a founding member of the group Friends of Robles Ranch (FORR).  One of her proudest accomplishments was working with FORR to get the Robles Ranch declared a historical site and eventually incorporated into a Pima County Community Center.  When this was established she was one of the first directors of the center.

Marion was committed to helping youth in the area.  She was part of the Community Substance Abuse Action Committee working with groups such as La Fonterra and Project Pep in the schools to help kids.  She wrote grants for programs that would help teenagers learn employment skills and fund work programs for them to gain job experience.  In 2012 FORR established a scholarship in her honor to be given to high school seniors who exemplified the spirit of volunteering in their community.

Marion had four children, Jackie, Chrissy , Buck  (Tammy) and Dinky (Sam).  She left behind five grandchildren: Gabriel (Ingrid), Aubry, (Nic) Briana, Alex, and Charles Thomas and six great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her grandson

Anthony Ortega. Marion defined determination and fearlessness and could make

the most mundane situation entertaining with her quick wit and wry sense of humor.  Her legacy will live on for years while her laughter, bright blue eyes and beautiful smile will live in our hearts forever.  A memorial will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 10:00am at Serenity Baptists Church.  For those who wish to make a donation in Marion's honor, they can be made to the Marion Whitfield scholarship made out to Friends of Robles Ranch, PMB 136 10390 South Sierrita Mountain Rd. Tucson, AZ 85736 or to Serenity Baptist Church, 15501 W. Ajo Hwy  Tucson, Az 85735

Two years ago an award was named the "Marion Whitfield Citizen of the Year".  She was the first recipient at a luncheon at Robles Ranch where the award sits above the fire place.

Last year Dane Miller's name was added.

DESERT HARVESTBy Donna Derosia

Owner of Kestrel Kafe & Market

This spring has been very inspiring and enjoyable for me. I hope it rings true for you too! The beautiful weather and great showing of flowers and trees has me snapping pictures every afternoon. It’s a great way to wind down from a hard day at work. It also gives a sense of how the desert changes with each passing day.

Cholla buds are at their peak for harvesting and eating. Native Americans have harvested cholla buds for centuries and have feasted on them as a sustainable part of their diet. They are very nutritious and have a sugar balancing effect on the metabolism.

Prickly pears are flowering and are sporting their tender new pads. They are called baby

nopals and are considered to be the most tender and flavorful to eat. They can be grilled or boiled and used as a vegetable on salads or just eaten seasoned with olive oil, salt and a little lime juice. Make sure you remove the spines before eating. I add them to my shredded beef or chicken along with some desert verbena for a distinctive flavor.

Newsletter available at www.roblesjunction.org Community News Page 6

I have also witnessed prickly pear pads being used to extract poison from a brown recluse spider bite. It worked miraculasouly but I would never ignore medical attention to such a bite. They can be very painful and have a necritizing effect on the flesh.

I hope everyone is having happy gardening experiences. Not to crush the joy but I do need to mention May is here and the heat is on! I would like to share some ideas for saving water in your gardening endeavors. We are still considered to be in a drought despite our good winter and summer rains. My suggestion are in the article titled Water Saving Ideas.

My travels this past month included taking advantage of National Parks free day when I visited Saguaro National Park West & Ironwood National Forest as well as a visit to the flourishing Mission Gardens. I will share some of the beauty with you of the Ragtop Mountains and random desert favorites.

Water Saving IdeasBy Donna Derosia

Owner of Kestrel Kafe & Market

• Install drip irrigation-drip systems use much less water and plants do better with drip irrigation. Be sure to carefully adjust the amount of water each plant gets according to it’s specific needs to save water

• Mulch-add 3 to 5 inches on top of beds to reduce water evaporation. Dried leaves, aged horse manure, extra compost or straw (not hay) work the best. Mulch also reduces weed growth

• Plant early maturing and short season crops-Native Seed Search specializes in these plants

• Start seeds in trays or small pots and transplant when they are healthy sized seedlings rather than watering an entire bed for starts

• Plant seedlings close together in an offset pattern rather than in a row-this uses less water and reduces evaporation by shading the soil

Gardening• Plan your garden carefully so that plants that need a lot of sun

are planted together and plants that need more shade are planted close together and shaded with shade cloth. This prevents soil evaporation and reduces sunburn

• Plant the proper plants for the season-we are moving out of the delicate greens season and into the heartier hotter season plants such as squash, tomatoes, peppers and melons

• Keep your beds weeded. Weeds compete for precious water and nutrients and will grab the nutrients before the plants

• Grow high yield vegetables such as beans, squash, eggplant, peppers and tomatoes. You will get more for your water buck with these plants

• When possible choose a garden location that is naturally shaded by trees

• Try dry farming. Tomatoes can be dry farmed by being planted in a high compost soil that will hold water. Water them as usual for the first few days and then water only once or twice a week. Once the tomatoes flower and set fruit cut off all water. The plants will not look good but will produce fruit that some say taste better than traditionally produced tomatoes

• Keep three things in mind-the key to a productive garden is location, soil and planting at the right time

News From Our Border Patrol

TUCSON, Ariz. -Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents arrested

three suspects and discovered five individuals inside vehicle trunks during separate incidents last week.

Take a look at the pictures.  Agents at the Interstate 19 checkpoint in southern Arizona discovered the men after suspicions were raised when they attempted to cross into Arizona and were pulled over for further inspection.

Per the Tucson Sector Border Patrol, "Several of the subjects removed from the vehicles stated they had no knowledge of the trunk release mechanism. Although none of the persons involved were injured, traveling with a person in the trunk of a moving vehicle is dangerous due to heat, the possibility of a vehicle accident, or other unforeseen circumstances."

All five men were taken into custody, along with the three drivers.  Their names were not released.

Despite high temperatures in the trunks, the men were not hurt.On March 11, an agent assigned to primary inspection referred the

driver of a Dodge Avenger to secondary and discovered an undocumented Mexican national inside the vehicle's trunk.

On March 13, agents at the checkpoint referred a Dodge Neon for a secondary inspection and discovered two Mexican nationals inside the vehicle's trunk.

The next day, agents arrested the driver of a Chevrolet Cruze after discovering two Mexican nationals, including one juvenile, inside the trunk of a rental vehicle.

Several of the subjects removed from the vehicles stated they had no knowledge of the trunk release mechanism. Although none of the persons involved were injured, traveling with a person in the trunk of a moving vehicle is dangerous due to heat, the possibility of a vehicle accident, or other unforeseen circumstances.Agents processed all vehicles, drivers and

undocumented subjects in accordance with Tucson Sector guidelines.

Checkpoints play an important role in the Border Patrol strategy by effectively restricting major routes of egress from the border region, hindering smugglers' ability to move people, drugs and other contraband further into the United States.

Community NewsScreenings can detect learning problems

before kindergarten by Leslie Lourdes

Just as mammograms or prostate exams help detect diseases earlier in adults, periodic screenings of infants, toddlers and preschoolers can help identify issues that can become learning challenges later on.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 13 percent of U.S. children between 3 and 17 have a developmental or behavioral disability. In addition, many children have delays in language or other areas that can affect school readiness. However, fewer than half of children with developmental delays are identified before starting school, meaning significant delays might have occurred and treatment opportunities may have been missed.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children be screened for developmental delays and disabilities during regular well-child doctor visits at 9 months, 18 months, and 24 or 30 months. Hearing and vision screenings are done before newborns leave the hospital and at every well-child visit. If your child’s doctor does not routinely check your child with these types of screenings, you can ask that they be done.

First Things First recognizes that early intervention is key to keeping developmental delays or sensory issues from becoming learning problems. Through our partnerships with child care centers, preschools and voluntary home visitation programs, last year more than 25,000 screenings were completed on kids birth to 5 years old. We also partner with parents to ensure children get the necessary referrals for follow-up services that can help.

If you are a parent or caregiver of a child 5 and younger, you can make a difference by monitoring your child’s physical, mental, social and emotional development. Please remember that all children develop at different rates; what is typical for other children may not be the same for yours. If you’re unsure whether your concerns warrant a doctor’s visit, call the toll-free, statewide Birth to 5 Helpline (1-877-705-5437). There, nurses and developmental experts will give you tips on which milestones your child should have achieved for their age and help you decide if a screening is needed.

By working together, we can ensure that all young kids are on track to start school healthy and ready to succeed.

First Things First is a voter-created, statewide organization that funds early education and health programs to help kids be successful once they enter kindergarten. Decisions about how those funds are spent are made by local councils staffed by community volunteers. To learn more, visit azftf.gov.

IS IT TIME TO INCORPORATE OUR COMMUNITY?

For another day?by Phil Lenzini

As our next November election cycle nears, the realization of time running short has struck home. We at Incorporate Robles Junction are realizing that we are rapidly running out of time. The task of forming committees, gathering information and writing a petition has proven to be very time consuming. As fellow citizens of our area, with jobs, households to run, health issues and all of life’s responsibilities, we just can’t do it alone. Because of these time constraints, lack of involvement in the community and our own limitations, we are choosing to delay the process of moving towards our stated goals.

The idea of incorporating our community as The Town of Robles Junction has had overwhelmingly positive support. Most everyone we talk to thinks it’s a great idea and would make our community a better place to live and work. However, ‘support’ doesn’t always translate into help. It would seem that people are having to work harder to keep their lives afloat, make ends meet. We are all busier than ever. So, while working so hard to get through the next week or month seems to take up all of our energies, getting

involved in something that will improve our situation in the future becomes hard to see.

Is the idea of incorporating our community dead? Absolutely not! Is it still a good idea? Absolutely! Will we continue to work on the process? Yes. However, by removing the time constraints of attempting to get the task completed by the next election cycle, we can move forward at a more manageable pace. Some of us will continue to do research, gather needed information and proceed towards the next step in the incorporation process. Do we still need help? Sure. If you feel you have anything to offer, and agree that our future will be better, if we are an incorporated town, please contact us.

As a long term goal, we are convinced that incorporating our area is the best thing to do. Our future is still in our hands. If support and help are offered by other members of our community we will address the issue once again in the fall. We will gather our resources and again, push for what we think is the best course for our community.

By Bill Praust

The Diamond Bell neighborhood is experiencing a great deal of activity these days.

Gas line crews started in the neighborhood last month, to replace our old natural gas lines with brand new ones. The project is expected to take about 5 months. During that time, whole blocks will be packed with construction crews, feeding these new lines underground.

The Main roads are being done first, followed by the side streets. So, as you are driving through our sub-division, be aware and use caution. Workers will be walking around, equipment will be in the streets and partial road closures may result.

This unexpected activity will be with us for a while.

A study from San Francisco University in 2007 shows the following examples:

TOO HOT

OUTSIDE VEHICLE INSIDE CLOSED

9 a.m. 82 degrees 109 degrees

12 p.m 101 degrees 119-127 degrees

130 p.m 112 degrees 124-130 degrees

IMPORTANT FACTS TO

KEEP YOUR PET SAFE

• The study notes that cracking the windows has little impact on the internal temperature.

• A separate study from Stanford University showed that even if the temperature is 72 degrees, the interior temperature can get as high as 116 degrees within an hour.

The Humane Society of Southern Arizona receives numerous calls every year, usually after outside temperatures have reached the 80 degree mark.

The Pima Animal Care Center responds annually to reports and numerous citations are issued to owners.

If you do plan to take your pet(s) with you, bring a water bowl and take measures to insure they are not in the car and subject to these extreme temperatures which can permanently harm or kill them. Minimize the time they are in the car or better yet, leave them at home.

It is a crime to leave an animal in a hot car subject to injury.

Any instance you witness should be reported to the Pima County Sheriff ’s Department (351-4900) or Pima Animal Care Center (724-5900).

We love our pets and often want to take them with us everywhere. Living in Arizona during the summer months, doing that is many

times not a good idea. Here is some information to help make the decision that is right for your pet during our extreme temperatures.

Math OlympiadRobles Elementary and Altar Valley Middle Schools will each

host the third annual Math Olympiad on Thursday, May 14. The Olympiad is formatted like a game show with students competing on teams to see which team can answer the most questions correctly before the other team. Students are chosen based on Galileo test scores, math fact fluency scores, correct math madness answers, and teacher recommendation. It is quite an honor to be chosen for the team and extremely fun to watch the competition.

Altar Valley Middle School

Summer vacation gives students a chance to relax and recharge for a new school year. But studies show that children can lose one to two months’ worth of skills during the break. Luckily, parents can help keep their middle school students learning all summer long with some ideas like these.

• Encourage your child to start on summer reading right away. Library waiting lists for popular books can grow quickly, so have them sign up early for ones they want to read. If they are stuck for

ideas, they can ask friends what they’ve enjoyed. Or suggest that they look online for reviews or best sellers.

• Summer school and summer programs are also great options for kids during the summer months.

• Summer goes more smoothly if you start with a plan. Decide ahead of time what your youngster’s bedtime and curfew will be once school is out. Keep in mind that a middle school student needs about nine hours of sleep a night. You will have fewer struggles if everyone knows what to expect.

Dear Parents,School is almost out and it is time to think about all of the fun and

exciting activities you can do as a family during the summer.  As you and your child are planning activities, don't forget to continue reading and practicing math.  Often students lose some of what they learn during the months they are out of school.

This is typically called the 'summer slide.'  To help your child have a fresh start for next year, try reading for ten minutes each day.  Just those few minutes each day can make a tremendous difference in your child's education.  If you have extra time, ask your child a few questions about what they have read.

Simple questions such as "What did you read?, or Who was the story about?" will help your child build their working memory.

It is also important to retain math skills.  To help you child, have them tell you the time on an analog clock, count the change in your hand, measure how tall they have grown or identify which price is the best at the grocery store.  All of those things build math skills.

I would like to invite you to the next APTT, Academic Parent Teacher Team meeting.  We will be discussing more ways you can help your child avoid the 'summer slide.'

Please mark you calendars and join us for the art show, pre-school and fourth grade promotion ceremonies, Bobcats of Excellence award ceremony and of course, our field day.  Please contact Evelyn See if you would like to volunteer.

Thanks again for all of your support.  Chandra Young Principal Robles Elementary
