O little babe, O gentle babe,That in a manger lies,

to the choral sweetWhich floats the skies;

We, through the year, who only hearThe world's harsh thundering,

Listen that we, dear babe, with thee,May hear the angels sing.

O little babe, O gentle babe.Who lookest toward the star,

And seest when they bear their gifts,Those wise men from afar;

From wandering wide, back to thy side,Weary and worn we fiee;

But hearts that bleed and hands that need.Are all we have for thee.

O little babe, O gentle babe,Our hearts were hard and cold;

The star we loved, the star of fame,The 6ong, the song of gold,

At the manger's side this Christmastide,We listen and we long

To see that star shine from afarAnd hear the angels' song.

Richard F. Souter.

as myself, it is like getting aletter from home, when it comes.

The day I left we were sorushed I did not have time togive you the address.

We arrived here just aftermidnight of the 11th and had areal pleasant trip. Ifind it hasbeenvery dry herein southwesternOklahoma and a very little stuffwas made. It is still very dryhere, and the rivers have butlittle water in them and lots ofwells have gone dry. People arehauling water. I am . told thetown of Ada, Oklahoma is hau-

ling water into the town by thetrainload to supply the town. Iam also told they have madepractically a failure for the pasttwo years and property here inChicasha has depreciated greatlyin value as well as the country.

I am not discouraged sincethere has been a failure allthrough the southwest. We havea fine valley there and . I amconfident the man who stayswith it, will be the man whowill come out O. K. in the end.

I didn't have time to comearound and sign up on theirrigation, but I guess there isplenty of-tim- yet. I hope it willgo through all right.

Wishing you a Merry Christ-mas and a Happy New Year,

Yours truly,Jesse McGhee .

Whiskey Did It.

The people of the EstanciaValley and Torrance County havehad two horrible examples dur-ing the past week of the work ofthe monster "drink." WalterA. Gray, after partaking of Estancia whiskey, assaulted his ownniece, and after abusing hermore horribly than will ever beknown, shot her and then blewher brains out. Miss Williamson,a young woman, helpless in thehands of her brute uncle. WHISKEY DID IT.

At Mountainair, after mixingup in a dance and a free-for-a- ll

fight, a young man within aweek after the murder mentioned above, shot and killed hisfather-in-la- It is admitted byall concerned that both partiesalong with others had been drinking at the dance. WHISKEYDID IT.

Miss Williamson is dead. MrLopez is dead. Walter Gray isin the Penitentiary for life. MrBarela is awaiting trial in jail(Monday). And whiskey is toblame. When will our peoplewake up? '

Larrazola claims the constitu-tion is easy of amendment. Whatwould he call a difficult matter,we wonder;

If Larrazola's address on Mon-day night is as convincing aswere his addresses before theconstitutional convention electionthe vote in Torrance county willprobably be several hundred ma-jority against the constitution.When a man turns squarelyagainst that he advocated only a

few months previous, the thinking voter will look for a coloretperson in the fuel, and will probably find him.

The thousands of prohibition-ists in the territory who beggedthe delegates in the constitution-al convention to submit a provis-ion for state-wid-e prohibition se-

parately from the constitution sothat it might Jbe voted on thesame time as the constitutionwere ignored entirely by themajority. What the prohibition-ists asked could, by no possibili-ty, have done any harm. If amajority of the voters of the ter-ritory do not 'desire state-wid- e

prohibition the provision wouldhave been voted down and thatwould have been the end of it,but if a majority of the votersfavored it the provision wouldhave been incorporated in theconstitution. The prohibitionistsbelieve that the measure wouldhave received a majority of the;

The Argus respectfully asksthat anybody who has occasion towrite it, spell the full word outand make it Christmas. The ab-

breviation of that name is utterlywithout rhyme or reason and nt

to all right minded people.Please, please, take time andwrite it as it should be. CarlsbadArgus.

The Progress heartily agreeswith the Argus in above. The custom di abbreviating that nameis, to our minds, most abhorent.

We do not believe that the Saviour of the world will approve ofbeing nicknamed; on the otherhand, we believe that He lookswith painful disfavor upon thethoughtless custom, and yet thatis what you do when you write orspeak it with an X, for X thusused is to represent Christ.

In order to show how ridiculousthe custom is, we will quote a fewpassages of scripture using the Xinstead of spélling the word out;"If thou be X save thyself andus." "Ought not X to have suf-

fered these things?" "Art' thouthe X, the son of the Blessed?""Then Phillip, went down to thecity of Samaria and preached Xunto them ," "I believe that Je-

sus X is the Son of God." "AndPeter said unto him, Eneas, JesusXmakeththee whole. ""As eyhave therefore received X Jesusthe Lord, so walk ye in Him.""The disciples were called Xiansfirst at Antioch." "Almost thoupersuadest me to be a Xian."

But this is enough. Wj h)pethat our readers have seen howblasphemously ridiculous it is andwill never again be guilty of writ-ing it with an X. LakewoodProgress.

"Title Talks"

The Business of Abstracting

The business of Abstracting titles is of comparatively recentgrowth. As lands increase in value, the need of title, security becomesmore and more imperative.

It is just assensible to safeguard the title to a thousand dollarjrs-ca- nt

lot or to any other property, asjit is to keep your.. thousand dollarbond understock and key.

PROTECTION IN EITHER'CASE IS THE THING SOUGHT.Good titles'make real estate as negotiable as stocks'and bonds.There is no way of being sure about the title except bytthehelp of

an abstractly a reliable company.

MENDING TROUSERS POCKETS

Mrs. Billtops Objects to ths Ons In-

genious Method That PleasesHer Husband.

"As some- - sage has remarked," saidMr. Billtops, "the longer we lives themore we finds out You take, for In-

stance, the mending of a trouserspocket that bas a hole in It down atthe bottom, so that you are in dangerof losing out of it your keys or yourpocket knife or such small change asyou may there carry.

"Now I supposed there were justthree ways of mending that pocket,three and no more. One way would

be to put a patch on it, another way

would be to cut off the bottom uf thepocket and sew on a new section, andstill another way would be to put inan entire new pocket; but the tailorto whom I took these trousers to befixed up has shown me a fourth way

that made me laugh for its simplicityand at the same time as I thought in-

genuity."He just folded over the bottom of

the pocket high enough up to cover

the hole, and then iust stitched thepocket across through the folded overpart and the main body of the pocket,this, you see something that could 110

done in a minute and that at the sametime served its purpose. I admiredit for its ingenuity anfi effectiveness,but Mrs. Billtops doesn't look at itas I do.

"She says that if it's a sloppy way

of mending a pocket, that it makesthe pocket shallower, for one thing,and that then that folded over part,making the pocket of double thick-

ness, makes a ridge there which ,isnot desirable. She says that she hasmended pockets that way herself, butthat it is not a good way, and I guessBhe's right; she generally is."

Ed Adams, who has beeu aFarmiogton, N. M., f jr severalmonths, returned to EstanciaSunday. Mr. Adams likes thevalley better than he did be

fore going north. He thinksthe soil here much better thanit Farmington and that we

would 1)3 able to raise bet'ercrops here than they do there,if we had the water.

will always believe that it played-'som-

in bringing about the death of

he, in all probability would not

Some will J' say the man was

anyway, Possibly so , and will

admit that it may have even been

are hardened enough to carry

it from a share at least of the

responsibility of that crime If

it could not be had, they would

not have its effects to help in

the crime: . .

As I see it, and I am not alone

in this view, the responsibility

for ihis crime probably lies at the

door ox one of the Estancia sa-

loons. .

Another point that it is well

for our law-abidin- g people to

consider is the fact that the whis-hke- y

was secured on Sunday,

when all such places of. business

are supposed to be closed. Is itreally true that liquor Í3 sold in

Estancia on Sunday, or at least

can be had? 1 am sure the writer

of this does not know. Others

may. I only call it up for con-

sideration. If it be true, where

are our officers? If our saloon-

keepers are in their .places of

business on Sunday or on any

part of that of day, with men,

who may have come in quietly'at the back door, yoa may ba

sure there is some drinking going

Your Friend's Faults.There is a quaint old saying that

every one carries two wallets oneehlnd and one before and both are
