R. C. Howell returned yes-

terday morning from Albu-

querque, his auto meetinghim in Willard.

Santa Fe. N. M., Sept. 12. --AtOne of the largest and most enthusiastic local political gatherings ever held in the city of SantaFe, the progressive republicansof the city met tonight and passeda set of ringing resolutions scor

ins: the old gang, and the men

who depend for political preferment upon their ability to buy

votes, and to deliver the goods.

The resolutions declared for thenational progressive principlesinsofar as they are applicable toNew Mexico, for the direct elec

tion of United States senators, for direct primaries, for an am

endment to the constitution permitting the courts to remove un

desirable officers and corrupt office holders without recourse tothe cumbersome, slow and oftenineffective method of impeach-

ment, for a corrupt practices act.and for a campaign fund pub-

licity enactment.The resolutions indorsed the

"blue ballot" and called upon all

good Republicans to vote for it,

It declared for party loyalty as

long as the party was controlledby principles and not by office-seekin- g

politicians) and it called

for the election throughout thestate of incorruptible, competentbusiness men of executive abilityand integrity, and not thosewhose sole claim to distinction is

party regularity.Taking up the situation in Santa

Fe county, the document called

attention to the fact that 140,000

in taxes must be provided by thecounty to make up its share of

the deficiency of $500,000, whichhad been saddled upon the whole

of New Mexico by the very menwho were seeking to continue thecontrol of the functions of govern-

ment in the new commonwealth,A reiteration of the desire of themembers of the meeting, as hon-

est and straightforward Repub-licac- s,

to work for tbe success of

the party that has made a re-

united nation possible, but callingfor men whom the spoils of office

can not taint, and whose sole ob-

ject in accepting the franchisesof their fellow citizens is serviceand not bosship, closed the reso-

lutions,An enthusiastic and unanimous

endorsement of the resolutionswas then given, Another meet-

ing will be held Friday night toselect committees and organizefor work in the county of SantaFe. Tee prospects for the pro-

gressives, as a result of the meet-

ing, are much brighter than themost sanguine expected prior tothd gathering, and a strong cam-

paign will be made to send to thestate convention at Las Vegas asolid progressive delegation, nledeed to work for the interestof the people and not at the be--

CALL FOR REPUBLICAN PRIMARY

To the Republicans of Estancia Precinct; Notice is hereby given that aprimary of the republican party hasbeen callad for 10, o'clock A. M. onSeptember the 20th at the Court House

Tour New Mexico

According to the AlbuquerqueMorning Journal, the democracyhas made arrangements for several national speakers to tourNew Mexico during the firststate campaign, a nong the notedspeakers being Hon, ChampClark, speaker of the NationalHouse of Representatives. TheJournal speaks of the campaignas follows;

That the democratic party in-

tends to make a vigorous campaign for the control of the stateof New Mexico is indicated bythe activity already apparentamong the leaders of the party.

State Chairman W. C Mc-

Donald has opened headquartersin Albuquerque and is directingthe organization movementwhich extends to every county inthe state. Literature is beingprepared and arrangements arebeing made for a thorough can-

vass which will be followed upwith' a speaking campaign inwhich not only prominent NewMexico leaders will participate, but in which it is intended to enlist the services of men of national reputation.

It is proposed as an openingteature ot the campaign to runspecial trains tb the state con- -

ventiov in Santa Fe October 3.

According to present plans thesetrains will be run from the Pe-

cos valley, from southern NewMexico, from Colfax cpunty andfrom the northwestern portion ofthe stale. By this means it is expected to secure the largestgathering of democrats everheld in the southwest and tolaunch the state ticket with anentnusiasm which will makeitself manifest in the most remote portions of New Mexico.

It is understood that in thecoming campaign the democratswill be hampered by no lack offunds to properly take care oftheir organization work andspeaking tours. It is reported ongood authority that the NewMexico state central committeehas been assured by the nationaldemocratic committee not onlvof its active support in the wayof speakers of national promi-nence, but of substantial cashcontributions toward the con-- :duct of the New Mexico statecampaign. According to thesame report, the National Leagueof Democratic clubs has alsopromised to deal generously withthe New Mexico democracy, bothin the way of speakers and funds

Santa Fe is already preparingto, entertain the delegates to thestate convention on a scale moremagnificent than any thing before in the annals of the ancientcapital and. the plan of runningspecial trains of modern Pullmansleepers from the four cornersof the state will assure an attendance that will tax the capacityof the city. . Our friend Larrazola says hehas gone over to the Republicanparty because it gives equalrights to all and then states thatthis same party stole from him aseat in congress, to which noone now doubts that he washonestly elected. And, hence hegoes over and joins hands withthe very men here in New Mexi-co who did the stealing. Larra-zola certainly has peculiar ideasabout "equal rights." Farmington Times Hustler.

To Unite Two

School Districts

A movement is on foot to unitetne Estancia and Blaney schooldistricts into one, thus giving ad-

vantages to both over the presentarrangement. At present Blaneydistrict has a school of somethirty pupils a few months in theyear, the larger and more advanced pupils attending the Es-

tancia school. The Estanciaschool board dislikes to chargetuition to those pupils from out-

side the district, yet it is unfairto the patrons of the Estanciaschool not to do so, after theBlaney district has had the benefit of the taxes from the electorsof that district. Under the proposed arrangement, a teacherwill be employed for the lowergrades at the Blaney schoolhouse, the term to begin the sametime as the Estancia school andrun for the same length of term. The more advanced pupils will allattend the Estancia schools without paying tuition, the two dis-

tricts being consolidated into theone.

This seems to be a better ar-

rangement than under the pres-

ent system, especially if the ad-

vanced pupils from outside theEstancia district are compelled topay tuition as they should. Thepetitions are being circulated forthe signatures, and if a majorityof the electors in both districtssign the same, the superintend-ent will be asked to consolidatethe districts,

ine business of Abstracting titles is of comparatively recentgrowth. As lands increase in value, the need of title,' security becomesmore and more imperative.

It is just as sensible to baieguard the title to a thousand dollar va-

cant lot or to any other property, as it is to keep your thousand dollarbond under lock and key.

PROTECTION IN EITHER CASE IS THE THING SOUGHT.Good titles make real estate as negotiable as stocks and bonds. There is no way of being sure about the title except by the help of

an abstract by a reliable company.

merchant of Willard, andfamily, left yesterday in theirauto for Kingman, Arizona, where Mr. Watkins has accepted a position as managerof the hardware division in adepartment store. Jerome hasmany friends not only in thesmith nart of the valley butnrmind Estancia as well, whohate to see him go, but expectto see him back soon.

C. L. Riley brought theNews as fine a half dozen earsof field corn as we have eversnarl. These were erown onMr. Ri lev's farm, four mileswest of town, without irrigatinn. the field consisting oftwenty acres. A splendin sampie of broom corn accompaniedthe corn. Mr. Riley says theonly trouble with the broomcorn is he didn't plant enoughof it. It proves however thatbroom corn will do well hereand is a money making cropfor the valley. The load ofwatermelons, Mr. Rileybrought in with him, were soldin short order, as there neverwas grown sweeter nor bettermelons than Estancia Valleydry farmed melons.

Thirty acres of grazing land isnecessary to raise one steer andit is claimed that ten people canlive very comfortably off thatsame area under cultivation. Be-
