FROM THE PASTOR Pastor’s Desk January 8, 2017 The Epiphany of Our Lord: The traditional date for the Epiphany is January 6, the twelfth day of Christmas. In the Eastern rites of the Church it is celebrated with as much solemnity as the Nativity of our Lord in the Western rites. The focus is on the Magi, the wise men who traveled from the East, following a star, to find the newborn king of the Jews. The Epiphany celebrates the universality of Christ’s message, the truth that the Lord is born for Jews and Gentiles alike. All those who seek the Lord are guided in faith to the place where Christ is born in their lives. If we walk by the light of Christ, we will experience “epiphany moments,” sudden insights into God’s plan or revelation of God’s presence in our world. In the eyes of the world the Magi looked like fools. They traveled for months or even longer in following a star. How foolish it must have seemed to give “gold, frankincense, and myrrh” to a baby! How foolish and even strange to give myrrh, an anointing balm for the dead, to anyone except to someone about to die! In the eyes of the world these men appeared to be foolish. St. Paul tells us that only fools for Christ are wise (see 1 Corinthians 3:18; 4:10). So, to be wise, we must not care about looking wise, being popular, being accepted, making money and being successful. To be wise, we must be willing to suffer ridicule, rejection, persecution and pain. Wisdom is available for the asking (as we read in the Letter of St. James 1:5. But who will love Him enough to ask for it? Consequently, no one wants to be wise except those who love Jesus so much they

Your Fish Fry Dollars at Work: A few weeks back new carpet, stair treads and cove molding appeared in the southeast entrance and stairwell at Holy Ghost Church. It really improves the appearance and brightens it up. Thanks to the Men’s Club for covering the expense. In the weeks ahead the other two stairwells will be updated as well. Archbishop’s Annual Appeal: The latest information available to me shows that 81 donors from St. Stanislaus have pledged $13,306 (65%) of the goal of $20,433. 91 donors from Holy Ghost have pledged $10,440 (87.3%) of the goal of $11,965). Please prayerfully consider a contribution to help us reach our goal if you have not already done so. Thinking Ahead: By making a planned gift to our parish endowment, you will be providing perpetual financial support. It is a wonderful way to demonstrate your stewardship and pass on your faith and love for the Church. Contact Ron Worthington, Estate Planning Officer in the Archdiocese of Omaha, at (402) 557-5650 Ext. 1901, to learn more. Your faith is worth passing on. Both Holy Ghost and St. Stanislaus have recently been remembered by former parishioners who took the time to make a gift like this in their wills. Have you?

Stewardship Reflection: January 8, 2017 The Epiphany of Our Lord “Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11

The image of the Magi kneeling before the infant Jesus and opening their treasure chests for Him is an image that we should all try to follow all year long. In gratitude for all that we have been given, we are called to generously share all of our gifts, not just the ones we pick and choose. God wants us to be the most generous with that one thing that means the most to us.

Word of Life—Sunday, January 8, 2017 “To be actively pro-life is to contribute to the renewal of society through the pronation of the common good. It is impossible to further the common good without acknowledging and defending the right to life., upon which all the other inalienable rights of individuals are founded and from which they develop.” Pope Saint John Paul II, Evangelium vitae, 101.

Thanks!!! LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Today's feast of the Epiphany reminds us that Jesus came into the world for all, not just a select group of people. Into all nations a light has come and today we reflect on the wonderful gift Jesus gives us in light. If we journey with him, there is always hope and the darkness of confusion, ignorance, sin, and even death is dispelled. God is with us and knows every aspect of what it means to be truly human. A Blessing for the New Year Remember us, O God; from age to age be our comforter. You have given us the wonder of time, blessings in days and nights, seasons and years. Bless Your children at the turning of the year and fill the months ahead with the bright hope that is ours in the coming of Christ. You are our God, living and reigning, for ever and ever. Amen. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
