The Epiphany Of The Lord January 3, 2016

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

HAPPY NEW YEAR! How many times during these past few days have we already used that phrase to relatives,

friends, fellow parishioners, and acquaintances? Implied in our greeting is a wish for health, wealth, and prosperity over the next twelve months. Cer-tainly we wish that for everyone, but even more im-portantly we wish that the joy of the Nativity remain in our hearts throughout the new year, and exem-plify itself through many opportunities to show mercy to others.

On the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Dec. 8, 2015, Pope Francis opened the Jubilee Year of Mercy, which will continue through the new year until November 20, 2016, the Feast of Christ the King.

In his homily of that day the Holy Father said: “I am convinced that the whole Church will find in this Jubilee the joy needed to rediscover and make fruit-ful the mercy of God, with which all of us are called to give consolation to every man and woman of our time. From this moment, we entrust this Holy Year to the Mother of Mercy, that she might turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey.”

Mercy is one of the great themes of the Holy Father, unceasingly reminding us of God’s great mercy to-ward us and encouraging us to imitate that same mercy toward others. But Pope Francis is not the only one who has emphasized mercy in writings or speeches. The subject has been treated by authors and poets, philosophers and religious leaders, and even politicians. Here are a few quotes from others on the topic:

“Every day my conscience makes confession relying on the hope of Your mercy as more to be trusted than its own innocence.” ― Saint Augustine

“When Jesus called the only son of the widow of Nain to life, he did so because he felt the deep sor-row of the grieving mother in his own heart (see Luke 7:11-17). Let us look at Jesus when we want to know how to show mercy to our brothers and sis-ters.”

― Henri J.M. Nouwen, Bread for the Journey: A Daybook of Wisdom and Faith

“I have always found that mercy bears richer fruits than strict justice.”

― Abraham Lincoln

“You cannot conceive, nor can I, of the appalling strangeness of the mercy of God.” ― Graham Greene, Brighton Rock

“I’ve always been bad. Probably I shall be bad again, punished again. But the worse I am, the more I need God. I can’t shut myself out from His mercy.” ― Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited

“Religion carries two sorts of people in two entirely opposite directions: the mild and gentle people it carries towards mercy and justice; the persecuting people it carries into fiendish sadistic cruelty. ― Alfred North Whitehead, Dialogues of Alfred North Whitehead

“It is mercy, not justice or courage or even heroism, that alone can defeat evil.” ― Peter Kreeft “Mercy and forgiveness must be free and unmerited to the wrongdoer. If the wrongdoer has to do some-thing to merit it, then it isn't mercy, but forgiveness always comes at a cost to the one granting the forgiveness.” ― Timothy Keller, The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith

“Every new morning brings new mercy, new love and new grace.” ― Lailah Gifty Akita, Pearls of Wisdom: Great mind

May the year of 2016 be one of peace, joy, prosper-ity, good health and GREAT MERCY! HAPPY NEW YEAR and God bless, Msgr. John Borcic

Stewardship Reflection “...The Gentiles are co-heirs, members of the same body, and co-partners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the Gospel.” (Ephesians 3:6) Today we celebrate that Christ came to all of us, not just the Hebrews. He made us all one body with Him. We were all given different gifts; we all have different yet equally valuable roles to play in the Body of Christ. Ask God how He wants you to use your gifts so that we may all “be one” in this Year of Mercy.
