The environment will change dramatically in the next 50 years - an essay by Hye jin KimThe environment is intimately connected with the activities of human beings. It is like a chain because if one part of the ecosystem is destroyed, other parts which are linked with it will also be corrupted. Because of this, many movements for protecting the planet are appearing around the world; nonetheless, many people have no awareness of this problem. For these reasons, I think that our environment will be dramatically changed and our generation will face a worse situation than us. There are two main aspects to the problems people made and will make destruction and pollution.

The first thing is the destruction of nature. We survive in a country by developing the land and people think that it is a normal thing that we can easily do; however, the land has a limit to how far it can be developed, that means that if it is within the range of recovery, the planet can return to something approaching its original condition. However, if it does not have the power of restoration, the soil will become infertile in a very short time. For example, the extent of Sahara desert is now so great because residents and nomads in this area excessively use the land by raising animals and cultivating grains. Furthermore, people are also developing the rainforest and other natural areas for their profit. As a result, the planet will lose the capacity for recovery and people will also lose the land which feeds them.

The second aspect is the pollution of air and water. For example, many cars emit exhaust fumes, and factories also use chemicals which harm the earth's air system. In addition, water is also affected by trash and things like food waste, which can cause the fish in lakes, rivers and seas to die. As a result, people can not breathe fresh air or drink enough water, and sometimes they will need other facilities to make oxygen and purify the water.

In my opinion, if we do not make an effort to solve those problems, our planet and future human beings are facing a situation which will be really different and even more difficult. There are some suggestions that people can do right now: doing cooperative projects such as recycling or reducing trash, and restricting excessive construction work. To sum up, if we do not make a significant change to our activities, the future will be entirely different, and rapid environmental change is not good for all living things including our children.

2 The world today is vastly different from what it was before urbanisation and industrialisation had taken its toll on the world. Since the turn of the new millennium the issue of the environment has suddenly evolved into a widespread issue which is greatly discussed throughout the world. No longer are humans living in a world where the environment is serene or stable but much rather becoming unrecognisable and diminishing before our eyes. The plants, trees and flowers are life forms which God has created for us to enjoy its beauty but it is now solely up to us and many other organisations to protect preserve and respect how fragile our environment really is.One of the most evident problems associated to the environment is the issue of the logging of trees, mainly in undisturbed places such as the Amazon basin. Trees are considered the lungs of the Earth. They recycle all the polluting carbon in the air and return oxygen back into our atmosphere, creating a stable cycle of carbon in our atmosphere. However, the impeccable rates which trees are being cut down in our forests have grown to ever increasing and alarming rates. Trees that are made way for farming are burnt up releasing deadly amounts of carbon and thus leading to the problem of global warming. As its names suggest the world is slowly warming up and without any notice the environment which God has gave us will be slowly eradicated. The daily lives which humans carry on about every day are also a factor influencing on our environment and global warming. By driving cars that have a thirst for petrol we are releasing carbon dioxide and furthermore impacting on the world?s climate. In Australia environmental impact has always been evident. Land clearing especially in places such as Queensland has caused land to lay dry and lifeless where all forms of life is destroyed. By clearing land we are not only affecting our climate but are also destroying animal habitat and the usage of the land. Senseless actions by commuters in Australia, emitting tons and tons of lethal gases vulnerable to the atmosphere are starting to take its toll on our climate. We are seeing a harsher climate and at the same time less rain. If we want to preserve our world we must take a stance on this issue and take action for what is right, not carrying on the actions that will lead to a desolate, destroyed Earth.Pope John Paul II once said, ?It is the task of human beings to care for, preserve and cultivate the treasures of creation.? The Pope is becoming aware of the environmental issues impacting on the world toady and is enforcing that we must do something before God?s creation is all but lost. He tells us that we must show respect for the environment and living our faith in relation with God?s creation. Everyone is affected and everyone is responsible. It is an issue that cannot be ignored and action must be taken to preserve something that is unique to humanity. Organisations are now being set up to help raise awareness of these issues that are present in our modern world. Catholic organisations such as CARITAS Australia are heavily involved in the frontiers of the environment. They help safeguard the environment by informing and educating communities in isolated areas the impacts of our actions on the environment and how we can help to protect it. Other organisations such Catholic Earthcare Australia promote understanding among people that God?s creation is something that is sacred yet endangered in our modern world and must be protected and sustained for present and future.It is our duty however to help carry out actions that will help cease the threats that are present to our environment. By actively participating in previously mentioned organisations we can all put something back into the environment. Planting trees is one of many steps that we can all do. Sensibly turning off switches or not using cars are also other ways to actively protect our environment. Perhaps one of the most successful ways to help prevent environmental damage is to discuss to others the issues relating to our environment. This way people can become informed and aware that there is only one environment and it is our duty to protect it.3Environment - An old short essay I wrote 4 years back.Close your eyesimagine a world where you have to where an oxygen mask to go out. We can reuse old newspapers for moving or repackaging. Old newspaper can be used to wrap items. This is better than buying wrapping material, which we will discard later. The two items that I mentioned can be recycled too. The plastic bags and old newspapers can be sent to a recycling centre where they will be broken down and made into raw materials for different industries.Generating electricity requires burning fossil fuels in most countries. The waste that is produced is harmful to the atmosphere and air that we breathe. We can invest in a solar power system that can generate electricity for us. This system can be fitted on the roof of any detached, semi detached or terrace house. It will generate clean energy for our homes. A lot of countries are considering this option for power production. The initial cost may be expensive the return of investment, meaning not paying for electricity off the grid sounds like a better option.Campaign for the protection of the environment. You can use the internet to campaign for protecting of the environment. You can blog and post videos on websites, providing information on how society can help protect the environment. With the power of the internet, information can spread quickly. You can do it the old fashioned way too. Talk to your neighbours and organize and a gotong-royong in your neighbourhood. This can help to clean up your area and you can get to know your neighbours better.So as you can see, there plenty of ways we as individuals can contribute. The three ways that I have shown can be done by all of us. Coming back to the scenario that I mentioned in the opening, I cant imagine living in an in an environment like that. The environment must be protected so that we can all live healthy and happy lives. This earth will be inherited by our children and grandchildren and we must make sure that it will always be there.

4Environmental pollution is the biggest menace to the human race on this planet today. It means adding impurity to environment. The environment consists of earth, water, air, plants and animals. If we pollute them, then the existence of man and nature will be hampered.It is true that trees are being cut down rapidly. Our earth is becoming warmer. If pollution continues, the day is not far when our earth will be a boiling pan and become a desert. Or it will be covered with sea water causing destruction of mankind.Pure air is always needed for inhaling. If we take pure air, our health improves. On the other hand impure air causes diseases and impairs our health and causes our death. Smoke pollutes the air. It is the root of air pollution. The smoke which is discharged from industries, automobiles and kitchens is the mixture of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane etc. These are all poisonous gases. These cause lung-cancer, tuberculosis etc. which take a heavy toll of life. The glaring incident is the Bhopal gas leak in December 1984. Thousands of the residents of Bhopal died due to lungs problem which was caused by methylamine gas from the Union Carbide Plant.The garbage emitting foul smell, the decaying plants and animals also cause air pollution. Hence the doctors advise the patients having lungs trouble to settle in some rural places because the air of villages is pure and free from population.Then comes sound pollution. The harsh sounds of buses, its, mopeds etc. affect our power of hearing and causes fart trouble. It has been reported that there are two villages named Biraspalli and Devadas Palli near Dum Dum airport m Calcutta where a large number of people have lost their power of hearing. This is because of the frequent sounds of planes coming in and going out of Dum Dum Airport. The evils of sound pollution can be imagined from this example.The water of rivers and seas is being constantly polluted all over the world by various dangerous chemical and biological wastes. Mills and factories discharge very harmful waste waters into many rivers and sea. The water of the Ganges flowing by the side of both Varanashi and Calcutta is extremely polluted and contains all sorts of dangerous bacteria. It is really very strange and laughable that large number of the Indians regard this water as holy. They even drink this water for salvation. There is no doubt that the fish that grow in such waters are poisonous too.Reckless application of chemical fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides pollutes the soil. Vegetables and fruits are quite injurious today, because they contain the poison of insecticides and pesticides.If the air we breathe, the water we drink and the soil which produces our crops, vegetables and fruits, all become more and more impure, then our chances of good health and longevity will be very less and less. Environment pollution is a serious menace to our existence. Realising the danger, we must plant trees in large number to absorb impure air. Impure water from industries can be sent back for purification and then it can be used for irrigation purpose. Our government is well aware of the fact and is taking steps to save environment from pollution. We have also I minister to look after the environment.5PollutionPollution is an issue of concern in the modern world that we live in today. There are many types of pollution, namely air, water and noise. Pollution in our environment will undoubtedly affect our quality of life. Air pollution is caused by the emission of toxic gases from vehicles, factories and open burning. Nowadays, there are more and more vehicles on the road as society gets more affluent. More and more people strive to have a better quality of life by having the convenience of driving to their destinations instead of taking public transportation. Automobiles provides transport to millions people around the world to enable them to travel to their workplace, school and other places, therefore, the air around us is getting more polluted by the carbon dioxide that is emitted. Carbon monoxide is another type of gas which harmful to the environment as it can cause the reduction of oxygen in the bloodstream.

Another example of contributor to the air pollution is the manufacturing factories. The manufacturing of products in factories to meet the growing demand of society is also causing air pollution. Factories release toxic gases to the environment. Some factories also use coal to generate heat and energy. As a result from the burning of coal, carbon dioxide is released into the environment.

Besides factories, many people are still practising open burning as a way of disposing their household wastes. Although burning our household wastes is a convenient way of getting rid of our rubbish, it is harmful to the environment as it contributes to the worsening of the air quality. As a result, air pollution causes people to suffer from health problems such as chest pain and asthma. In extreme cases, people can contract lung cancer.

Water pollution is also a problem that we are currently facing. The marine life is the first to suffer from water pollution as they depend on the nutrients in the water to survive. As a result, we are robbed of beautiful sea corals and unique species of fishes. Besides ruining our marine heritage, the disappearance of marine life will affect the livelihood of fishermen, not to mention our source of food. Water pollution is caused by harmful waster from industries, farms and sewerage systems which are dumped into our sources of water such as rivers and lakes. This irresponsible act contaminates our drinking water and can cause serious health problems and can even culminate in death.

Noise pollution is another form of pollution. Noise from heavy machinery and vehicles can cause hearing problems and in extreme cases, deafness. As there is growing number of vehicles on the road, we are exposed to noise pollution every day. The government in advanced countries encourage their citizens to take the public buses and trains by providing an affordable and efficient transportation system. This effort discourages people from driving their private vehicles and consequently reduces the number of vehicles on the road.

We must work together to reduce pollution so that the future generations can live in a healthy, unpolluted environment. As the saying goes, precaution is better than cure. Lets hands on hands together by recycle and conserve the world for the better future.

What governments need to do to make this happen is to ensure there is a global programme to educate people of all ages about the environmental consequences to their actions.In summary, I believe that increasing the level of taxation on fuel is at best a short-term solution to only one environmental problem. If we wish to provide a home for our childrens children, education is likely to be the key to making this happen.
