Spring 1945: Germany under

Attack

• The Allies were getting closer & closer to Germany

• USA, Canada & Britain fought from the West

• Soviet Union fought from the East

• Soviets raising their flag over the Reichstag

Germans Living in Terror• Repeatedly bombed by the Allies, who were hoping

to force Germany to surrender– Dresden (Fahrenheit 451 anyone?)

• Germans began to flee – terrified of the Allies taking revenge, especially the

Russians• Murder, torture, rape, starvation, further destruction

• Adolf Hitler committed suicide – In his underground bunker on April 30th

• Germans were starving, living in poverty, and desperate

Dresden, 1945 and 2005.This city was still restoring buildings even in 2015.

Liberation of concentration camps• As the Allies freed Nazi-occupied territory,

they reached the concentration camps & liberated the prisoners

V-E Day: May 1945• America & the Allies

occupied Germany

• Nuremburg Trials

– Nazi leaders captured & put on trial for their enormous crimes

• The process of rebuilding a destroyed continent began…

V-J Day: Aug. 15, 1945• Japan announced surrender

on Aug. 15, 1945

• This occurred after the 2nd

atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki

• US requires Japan to restructure their gov. & economy

Jews Returning… Home?• Holocaust survivors were in a difficult position

– Had survived hell but for what? No money, often no family, no home to return to, PTSD

• Some did return to their hometown

– Anti-Semitism was still common in some of these places

• Spent months or years in DP camps- Displaced Persons camps

– Safe, free, food provided, rough shelter provided

• Many then emigrated from Europe to Israel, the USA, Australia, etc.

• Palestine divided up & part given to Jews to create a home country (Israel) by the UN in 1947

Deaths

• 50 million humans killed

Effects of the War

• US & Soviet Union = superpowers

• Cold War immediately begins

• Germany & Japan occupied by Allies

• Fascist governments overthrown

• Nuremburg Trials: 200 Nazis put on trial

• End of League of Nations; United Nations created

– Similar purpose

• Increase in working women
