Deep Creek Friends Meeting April, 2012

Gray Hares

Have you seen the email going around with pictures of U.S. presidents before they took office and then snapshots of them after they left office? It is a pretty telling visual of how job stress, time, and family demands can affect us physically. Don’t get me wrong…Bill and George look more handsome than haggard. Yet you cannot help but notice that the tops of their heads were crowned with more silver on their last day in the Office of President than the day they were sworn in.

I use to tell my hairdresser that I would simply, “grow gray gracefully”. I think I was twenty-five years old when I made that statement! When faced with the dreaded gray hairs I “gracefully” ran to the hair-color aisle at the local drugstore to restore my locks to their rightful dark brown.

The writer of Psalm 71 faces the facts: hoary heads happen. Knowing that, the writer also asks a favor of God: Don’t forsake me.

While many in our culture think of growing older as a negative thing, the person who wrote this psalm lived at a time when graying hair brought respect. The psalmist sees this respect as an opening to share the Lord’s love. He implores God to give him this opportunity.

As God adds years to our lives, he also adds the power of perspective. We can look back and see God’s faithfulness at work year by year. We can remember the many ways he has revealed his goodness to us throughout our lives.

Then, we can more convincingly encourage the next generation in our Lord’s faithful love. Maybe that’s why God keeps us here long after gray locks send us scrambling to the hair-color aisle. We’re the people who get to pass on the faith, beginning with those in our own families…sons, daughters, even grandkids.

The free gift of salvation through Jesus’ saving death must be passed on. Those times you’ve wrestled with God in prayer? Share it!! The blessed relief of sins forgiven? Share it!! The love of God felt in the deepest loneliness? Share it!!

Does perfection come with gray hair? (Don’t I wish!) Unfortunately, the answer we know is, no. Sin still attacks; doubts still sneak in; and loneliness worries us. But we’ve been there before, and we know the simple answer…Jesus. In that name we find a beauty granted us by the Creator and renewed purpose for our lives in his calling to “pass it on”.

Dear God, Thank you for all my gray hairs and the wisdom that comes from each one. As your grace covers me help me to reflect your beauty in the lives of those around me. Amen.

Happy Easter to you and yours,

Georgianne

Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come. Your righteousness, God, reaches to the heavens, you who have done great things. Who is like you, God? ~Psalm 71:18-19

Food for the Hungry

Thank you for your continued support of Yadkin Christian Ministries. During the past month, nearly 90 food items were left for our church contribution. Also, several volunteers assisted with the work at the center. For April, Hamburger Helper and more Macaroni & Cheese would be good items to contribute. Families with children are especially in need. If it is more convenient to give money, that would be most helpful. Just mark your check or envelope for Yadkin Christian Ministries or “food for the hungry” and drop it in the offering plate.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina was founded in 1982 with the mission to

reduce hunger and malnutrition in 18 counties across our state. Now more than 300,000 people annually are being served. In the last 3 years, food distribution has tripled. Yet the gap between what is needed and what is provided continues to grow.

Thank you for your concern and continued support for feeding the hungry in our county.

The FOJ enjoyed a SUPER time of worship at the FROG lock in!! We kicked off the evening with some free time and roasting hotdogs and smores. We then traveled from station to station enjoying crafts, games, music, Bible story, prayer and a puppet show. We finally settled down for a movie and some sleep at midnight! A huge thank you to all the parents who helped make this event flow smoothly! I am amazed by the children’s wonderful behavior and willingness to participate and learn! I am truly thankful to GOD for His hand in this event and for the blessing of allowing us to worship together and grow in His word!! Special thanks to Michael Ray for his awesome work in roasting the hotdogs!!!

Spring has rushed in and with it, many exciting things in the DOGS and Youth groups. While we've had some rainy days, March has afforded us the opportunity to get outside in God's creation and enjoy the beautiful spring weather. At both of our meetings this month we were able to square off in kickball, basketball and capture the flag. God's creation is good! The DOGS continued their journey through the Old Testament in March. We learned several more books and looked at selected stories from scriptures. At our first meeting, we took a closer look at the story of Sampson and Delilah. Sampson went through

a dark time (literally and figuratively) without his former strength. After being broken in a dark place, he asked God to restore his strength and God faithfully answered. We each thought of a "dark" time in our life where we needed God to give us strength. Sampson set the example for the counsel we should seek when strength is needed to get us through our dark times. He sought God who faithfully answers!

At our second meeting, we looked at the life of Solomon and his rise to power after King David. King Solomon was known for his wisdom. Again we looked at how he sought out God and asked for wisdom. God granted Solomon the wisdom he needed to serve and lead. We learn from Solomon that we again must seek God's counsel to provide wisdom to us when facing the trials of life.

The Youth began the month by starting a new curriculum by the "Skit Guys." The first lesson came from the Song of Solomon and was a word of advice to form healthy relationships that include trust and most importantly, God. Our next lesson landed us in Ephesians. We looked at Ephesians 2:10, which says "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." We focused heavily on the fact that we are a creation of God. God is the perfect artist who made our physical beings as part of his handiwork. Although he created our physical bodies uniquely, he does expect our hearts to change in appearance after we accept Christ. God, as master sculptor, chisels on each of our hearts to

discipline us for a life that resembles that of Christ. The main point is that we must accept our physical appearance as God's intended art form for us, but also knowing that our hearts must be chiseled and sculpted to be more like Christ.

It is exciting to see how God is working in our meeting and through our Youth and Jr. Youth groups. I'm excited to see what he has in store on the horizon! Blessings, Jared

Congratulations

Jason ball Goes to WashinGton

Jason Ball went to Washington on a four day trip with Starmount Middle School students. He took lots of pictures and had a wonderful time. All he

could say was

“WOW, didn't know places was so BIG!” He wants to thank everyone that helped him

with the trip. (Grandmother says he wouldn't have gotten to go without it.)

Also, on March 12, Jason learned that he was winner of the most popcorn sold in Scout Troop #655. For this, he received a pin and a gift certificate for Wal-Mart. He also was chosen for the ORDER OF THE ARROW. Jason says that it's a very big deal in Scouts and is looking forward to the ceremony this summer at Raven Knob. His family is excited and very proud of his accomplishments in Scouts.

At this Resurrection Season we Remember, With Gratitude and Appreciation , Those Members of Deep Creek Friends Meeting Who Passed Away since Easter 2011.

Mark Adams Mark Adams was a kind gentleman and a devoted husband, who never stopped caring for the people around him. We, at Deep Creek will always be indebted to him for his knowledge of the history of our meeting which he shared with such joy and care. This oldest member of our meeting was an inspiration to all and continued to be involved until near the end of his life.

Nell Williams Nell Williams was an

attractive and sweet lady with an “infectious

smile”. She enjoyed being at church and especially enjoyed the visits by the Youth and young adults at the nursing home. She had a way

of making them feel very much appreciated.

Ben Brendle Ben Brendle was a part of Deep Creek Meeting during his whole lifetime. When you went to church on Sunday, you knew that Ben would be there. At the store, he was the keeper of the key and a handy source for refreshments and supplies. One of his special gifts was his simple compliments and encouragement for whatever you were doing.

Last spring on a Sunday afternoon, my husband and I took one or our “nowhere” drives through the country. While he was quietly driving along some back roads, I was occupied in the front passenger seat watching out the window as the scenery went by.

I noticed out of the corner of my eye that my husband was straining to look out my window. This startled me, since his eyes should be on the road in front of him. I asked him what he was looking at out the windows, and he quietly replied, “Nothing.” His eyes went back to the road in front of him.

After a few minutes, I looked over at my husband and noticed a tear running down his cheek. I asked him what was wrong. This time he told me. “I was just thinking about Pop and a story he once told me.” Of course, because it had to do with his Pop, I wanted to know the story, so I asked him to share Pop’s story with me.

He said, “When I was about eight years old, Pop and I were out fishing and that’s when he told me that the “Pine trees know when it is Easter.” I had no idea what he meant by that, so I pressed him for more information.

He continued on… “The pine trees start their new growth in the weeks before Easter – if you look at the tops of the Pine trees two weeks before Easter, you will see the yellow shoots. As the days get closer to Easter Sunday, the tallest shoot will branch off and form pine tree crosses for Easter. By the time Easter Sunday comes around, you will see that most of the Pine trees will have small yellow crosses on all of the tallest pine shoots.”

I turned to look out the window and I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was a week before Easter, and you could see all of the pine trees with the tall yellow shoots stretching to Heaven. The tallest ones shone in the sunlight like rows of tiny golden crosses. Contributed by Brenda Adams

Editor’s Note: Last year I checked this out and the old scruffy pine tree that Wiley’s Dad years ago said we should cut down was covered with little crosses.

And I, when I am lifted from the earth, will draw all people to myself. John 12:32

Who Will Be Your Attorney?

After living what I felt was a 'decent' life, my time on earth came to the end. The first thing I remember is sitting on a bench in the waiting room of what I thought to be a courthouse.

The doors opened and I was instructed to come in and have a seat by the defense table. As I looked around I saw the 'prosecutor.' He was a villainous looking gent who snarled as he stared at

me. He definitely was the most evil person I have ever seen. I sat down and looked to my left and there sat My Attorney, a kind and gentle looking man whose

appearance seemed so familiar to me, I felt I knew Him. The corner door flew open and there appeared the Judge in full flowing robes. He commanded an

awesome presence as He moved across the room. I couldn't take my eyes off of Him. As He took His seat behind the bench, He said, 'Let us begin.' The prosecutor rose and said, 'My name is Satan and I am here to show you why this woman belongs in hell.'

He proceeded to tell of lies that I told, things that I stole, and In the past when I cheated others. Satan told of other horrible perversions that were once in my life and the more he spoke, the further down in my seat I sank. I was so embarrassed that I couldn't look at anyone, even my own Attorney, as the Devil told of sins that even I had completely forgotten about.

As upset as I was at Satan for telling all these things about me, I was equally upset at My Attorney who sat there silently not offering any form of defense at all. I know I had been guilty of those things, but I had done some good in my life - couldn't that at least equal out part of the harm I'd done?

Satan finished with a fury and said, 'This woman belongs in hell, she is guilty of all that I have charged and there is not a person who can prove otherwise.'

When it was His turn, My Attorney first asked if He might approach the bench. The Judge allowed this over the strong objection of Satan, and beckoned Him to come forward. As He got up and started walking, I was able to see Him in His full splendor and majesty. I realized why He seemed so familiar; this was Jesus representing me, my Lord and my Savior. He stopped at the bench and softly said to the Judge, 'Hi, Dad,' and then He turned to address the court.

'Satan was correct in saying that this woman had sinned, I won't deny any of these allegations. And, yes, the wage of sin is death, and this woman deserves to be punished.'

Jesus took a deep breath and turned to His Father with outstretched arms and proclaimed, 'However, I died on the cross so that this person might have eternal life and she has accepted Me as her Savior, so she is Mine.'

My Lord continued with, 'Her name is written in the Book of Life, and no one can snatch her from Me. Satan still does not understand yet. This woman is not to be given justice, but rather mercy.' As Jesus sat down, He quietly paused, looked at His Father and said, 'There is nothing else that needs to be done.' 'I've done it all.'

The Judge lifted His mighty hand and slammed the gavel down. The following words bellowed from His lips. 'This woman is free. The penalty for her has already been paid in full. Case dismissed.'

As my Lord led me away, I could hear Satan ranting and raving, 'I won't give up, I will win the next one.' I asked Jesus as He gave me my instructions where to go next, 'Have you ever lost a case?' Christ lovingly

smiled and said, 'Everyone that has come to Me and asked Me to represent them has received the same verdict as you – Paid In Full’.
