SAINTS PETER AND PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH JULY 23-24, 2016

Do You Believe In Prayer? The main themes of today’s scripture are the power of intercessory prayer, the ideal prayer, the Our Father,

and the necessity for persistence and perseverance in prayer, with trusting faith and boldness. In short, they

teach us what to pray and how to pray.

“A tale is told about a small town that had always been ‘dry.’ One day, however, a local businessman

erected a tavern. A group of Christians from a local church were concerned and they convened an all-

night prayer meeting to ask God to intervene. It just so happened that shortly thereafter lightning

struck the tavern burning it down to the ground. The owner of the bar sued the church, claiming that

the prayers of the congregation were responsible, but the church hired a lawyer to argue in court that

they were not responsible. The presiding judge, after his initial review of the case, stated, ‘No matter

how this case comes out, one thing is clear: the tavern owner believes in prayer and the Christians do

not.’”

This might seem funny to you, but there is a lot of truth in it. The fact is that we have lame excuses which turn

us away from prayer: Modern Christians give four lame excuses for not praying:

1) We are too busy. The richer a culture is, the less time it has for prayer, because money and wealth

provide distractions. Researchers say that the average Christian living in a wealthy country prays

four minutes a day. Often the first thing given up by a busy Christian is his prayer life thus

disconnecting himself from the real source of spiritual power.

2) We don’t believe that prayer does that much good other than giving us psychological motivation to

be better persons. Prayer establishes and augments our relationship with God, the source of our

power. We may not get what we ask for, because it may not be what God wants for us. He knows

our needs better than we do.

3) A loving God should provide for us and protect us from the disasters of life, such as disease or

accidents, without our asking Him. Prayer expresses our awareness of our need for God and our

dependence on Him.

4) Prayer is boring. It is never boring if we learn to talk to God and listen to Him. People who use this

excuse forget the fact that prayer is a conversation with God: listening to God speaking to us

through the Bible and talking to God. You can’t have a close relationship with anyone, including

God, without persistent and intimate conversation. Four minutes a day is not much intimate

conversation.

Luke’s Gospel tells that even Jesus prayed and He wanted His disciples and us to see this and to be aware of

the power of prayer. The “Our Father” is a source that we need to sustain us and to give us the power to be

better persons. Therefore, we should pray it often taking time to do it slowly and with much thought.

Prayer should be an important part of our live. Do it frequently and with thought. We may not get what we

ask for, but we will be communicating more fully with God and with others.

Catechists and Faith Formation

Volunteers Needed

No prior experience needed and you don’t have to have a family member in the program to become a catechist. Teens can volunteer to help in classes as aides.

Top Ten Reasons You Should Become a Catechist

10. The best way to refresh and expand your own faith is to teach.

9. More than ever, children, teens, and adults need to hear the Good News of Jesus

Christ.

8. Children, teens, and adults need good role models in their life. It will also show

your own family members that religious education is important to you!

7. You’ve got a lot to share! You don’t need a lot of book-learning. Your gift to the

students will be sharing your own faith.

6. You’ll be provided with excellent resources and great support.

You won’t be alone; catechists work in pairs and in addition, you have the Holy

Spirit and all the teachings of the Church with you.

5. You’ll become an active part of one of the most active groups of the parish. You’ll

get to know the other catechists as well as have the opportunity to get to know the

members of our parish.

4. You’ll be practicing good stewardship by giving a precious resource—your time. It’s

a great way to put your faith in action

3. You’ll be saving lives! Not to be too dramatic, but…

2. Its fun and it will leave you energized to bring your own faith alive.

1. it’s what we are called to do. Jesus said, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all

nations...teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”

This year children, young people, and adults, will sign up to learn more about Jesus and

the Catholic faith. You can help them learn and grow in faith by becoming a catechist for

Faith Formation. With the age ranging from pre-school to Sixth grade, you are almost

certain to find an age to appeal to you. As you nurture the faith of our parish, you will

learn and grow as well! As one long-time catechist put it, “I receive much more than I

give!” We provide you with training, materials, and support. Please prayerfully consider

this way to contribute to our parish!

Contact the office for more information.

The Logic of Being Catholic

Dr. Ray Guarendi shares his story of how logic

led him home to the Catholic Church. He found

out that, contrary to his Protestant

misunderstandings, the Church is coherent and

never contradicts herself. Dr. Ray explains how

the answers to his objections to Catholicism

were both Biblical and believed by the earliest

Christians. Explore the logic that led him to the

fullness of truth.
