WHAT’S HAPPENING¨

What an awesome time the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers was this year! With the Carnival celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, Palm Lake Resort entered our first float in The Grand Parade, under the theme ‘The Power of the Flower’. We were lucky enough to be awarded third prize in the parade! You can read more about our resort’s Carnival efforts (and those bloomin’ great efforts of our residents as well) on Pages 4-5 of this newsletter.

There have been lots of changes in the Sales Centre recently. Mark is currently away on sick leave so our youngest team member, Jamie-Lee, has stepped up to the mark (pun intended!) and is looking the part of a very switched-on Sales Consultant. We’ve also had to borrow Chrissy from resort administration to help us out with sales administration whilst a replacement is sought.

Don’t forget our ‘Spring Has Sprung’ sale. Palm Lake Resort is offering unbelievable discounts on our finished homes and there’s still time for you to be in your new home before Christmas! Contact the Sales Office for further details.

We have two bumper events coming up to round out what has been a wonderful year for Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba. Please save two dates (November 12 and December 6) in your diaries now. If you are on our mailing list, you will receive personal invitations to these great events but don’t hesitate to call for more information if you need it. We look forward to hearing from you.

WELCOME

Toowoomba’s Christmas Wonderland has grown to be one of Queensland’s biggest light extravaganzas. The event is a traditional Christmas lights display covering four acres in the Botanical Gardens Area in Queens Park, Lindsay St Toowoomba hosted by the Lions Club of Toowoomba West Inc. The children can enjoy free icecream and there will be barbecues each night, a Christmas raffle, Lions Christmas Cakes for sale, entertainment and more. Wonderland runs each night in December, until Christmas Eve, from 7-10pm (weather permitting). Visit www.christmaswonderland.com.au

THE TOOWOOMBA CARNIVAL OF FLOWERS IS ICONIC IN TOOWOOMBA. CELEBRATING 70 YEARS THIS YEAR, THE EVENT’S GRAND PARADE ENJOYED A NEW ENTRANT – WITH THANKS TO THE TALENTS OF SOME DEDICATED PALM LAKE RESORT TOOWOOMBA HOMEOWNERS AND STAFF.

BLOOMIN’ BEAUTY ¨

People travel from all over the country and descend upon Toowoomba in September each year to indulge in the range of bloomin’ fun events and also stand in awe of the floral wonder that is this entire regional city during the Carnival of Flowers. The carnival celebrated its 70th anniversary this year and Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba has always played a role in the event – from dressing up the resort’s own gardens, to encouraging residents to enter the garden competition. We even have a few past Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers ‘Carnival Queens’ who nowadays call our resort home! This year, Palm Lake Resort’s participation in the town’s most popular annual event extended to include an award-winning entry in the Grand Parade.

THE GRAND PARADEPalm Lake Resort Toowoomba resident Bill Jacklin is the coordinator of the resort’s workshop and an ex-manual arts teacher, so when the Sales Team had an

idea to enter a float in the parade, Bill was their first port of call. The float began life as an old trailer. The workshop team stripped it down, put in a new wooden floor and built an almost 3m-high arch structure that was inspired by the resort’s tenpin bowling alley. The arch gave way to a river of potted flowers that flowed down into a replica infinity-edge pool, not unlike the Pinnacle Country Club’s own impressive pool. The residents fashioned a Palm Lake Resort logo out of steel and ex-farrier resident Ray Gallaher created some quirky flamingos out of old horse shoes to adorn the impressive creation. And what would a Palm Lake Resort float be without a few palm trees?!

“It’s taken a lot of work and a lot of hours have been put in, but it’s been such an enjoyable exercise,” Bill says.

The project has helped shine a spotlight on the resort’s workshop, showing just how clever and creative our residents are.

“It’s amazing what many hands working together can come up with,” Sales Manager Leisa Saunders says.

Bill says the float structure really came to life with thanks to the efforts of the Sales Team and the resort’s groundspeople who did “a truly magnificent job” of preparing dozens of potted flowers that helped the float literally bloom into life. And the team’s efforts were definitely rewarded. The float scored third prize in the Grand Parade and was a real stand out among the dozens of entrants.

BETTY’S STILL GOT IT! Betty Sullivan has received some kind of Carnival of Flowers commendation every year for the past decade. We’ve been lucky to have Betty call Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba home for the past five years. In this year’s competition, Betty’s incredible Villa 197 garden received second prize in the “Lifestyle Unit Dwelling Garden” category and third

in the “Front Garden” category - for the whole of Toowoomba!

“Gardening is just what I like to do,” an ever-humble Betty says. “I have a beautiful home that I keep neat and tidy inside and when that’s all done, I like to go outside and work in my garden. It keeps me alive!”

Among the key decorative elements of Betty’s entry this year, she covered her late husband’s trestle (that dates back to the 1950s when he was a carpenter after the war) with planters full of bright petunias. And she fashioned up a display with a

watering can that spills faux water (think glistening clear and blue beads wired to the spout) over a wheelbarrow and garden full of blooms below. Betty says she had her most successful display of blue larkspurs ever this year, that stood an impressive one-metre tall. Betty’s yellow calendulas “looked like sunshine” and sat proud alongside masses of gorgeous white alyssum, bold blue lobelias and even sculpted china pink shrubs.

“I started to think about my display in February and was planting by the end of May,” Betty says.

With her 90th birthday coming up in January 2020, Betty says this year’s entry might have been her last for the Carnival, although she admits she’ll never say never.

As well as Betty’s award wins, Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba’s own resort grounds were Highly Commended in the city’s “Commercial Premises” category.

>> Turn over to read about one of our Palm Lake Resort residents, Judy Zimmerle, who was the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers Queen back in 1963.

Page 4: THE EDGE · With her 90th birthday coming up in January 2020, Betty says this year’s entry might have been her last for the Carnival, although she admits she’ll never say never

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF OUR RESIDENTS ̈WE KNOW THAT ALL PALM LAKE RESORT RESIDENTS ARE SPECIAL PEOPLE IN THEIR OWN WAYS, BUT DID

YOU KNOW THERE’S EVEN ROYALTY IN OUR RANKS? ALL HAIL (EX-) QUEEN JUDY!

It might have been almost five decades ago, but Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba resident Judy Zimmerle wore a crown and was treated like royalty – if only for a week or so! This year, as part of the 70th anniversary of the iconic Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, past Carnival Queens and Ambassadors gathered with Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio and other dignitaries for a special morning tea to reminisce about their respective reigns. Among the other invitees was fellow Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba resident Merle Stevens who was also a Carnival Queen back in 1963 (stay tuned for Merle’s story in an upcoming edition of The Edge newsletter).

Judy was born in Allora. Her father was in the RAAF and her family moved to Toowoomba when she was 15 for her father’s work. At 16, Judy started at Piggott’s department store as a sales clerk selling everything from lingerie to ladies fashion. It was Piggott’s who sponsored Judy into the carnival in 1971, when she was aged 19.

Judy recalls the judging process taking a full day. Dressed in her best day wear (but without gloves or a hat, like some of the other nominees wore), representatives from TAA, June Dally Watkins, the Carnival of Flowers board and even Toowoomba Council were tasked with interviewing each of the 25 or so entrants and choosing a winner who would be announced the following night at the grand ball. Judy vividly remembers the details of her ball gown – the shiny greeny/yellow floral fabric that had an almost metallic appeal, and the shirred bodice.

“It was very exciting because it was the first year that the ball and the Carnival Queen announcement was televised,” Judy recalled. “Tony Barber was the MC. I remember thinking that another girl would

be the winner and I was looking at her as they announced the winner so I could watch her reaction. When they called my name, it took a second or two for the news to sink in!”

Among Queen Judy’s prize haul, she received a trip to New Zealand, a trip to the Great Barrier Reef, a beauty case, cosmetics, a perpetual crown and more – all things fit for a queen! While Judy admits the crowning was a wonderful time, it wasn’t anything completely life changing… Except that her future husband saw her photo on the front page of the following day’s newspaper and told his father that he liked the look of that year’s winner! Within a few years the pair would connect and the rest, they say, is Toowoomba history.

Judy and Russell have built a life around Toowoomba – owning a string of family homes in the area and raising two children here (who have gone on to give Judy and Russell five wonderful grandchildren). The pair moved to Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba in May this year and have delighted in the facilities. Judy loves her aqua aerobics, swimming and the gym while her visiting grandies love nothing more than a game of tenpin bowling or joining Judy in the pool – her nine-year-old grandson especially loves meeting other residents because they are “all so nice”! Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba is definitely excited to have royalty in our ranks and the more princes and other various royal family visitors who enjoy our facilities with our Queen Judy, the better!

ROYALTY IN OUR RANKS ̈

LIQUID PLEASURE

Below, our heated indoor pool is the perfect location for regular all-weather water aerobics classes – an easy, effective and fun way to stay active. Toowoomba’s Pinnacle Country Club also has a knock-out infinity-edge outdoor pool, overlooking the stunning valley beyond.

RACK ‘EM UP

Left, our pool tables always get a good work out whether it’s our residents having a social game with visiting family/friends or a weekly club gathering.

Above, lawn bowls is a big part of each Palm Lake Resort community. We build eight-rink undercover greens to the highest standard in all new resorts. Toowoomba residents like to play socially and competitively and (just quietly) they do very well at it! In fact, the Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba community is quite an active one. Below, they love to play sport and our tennis courts make that easy. Tenpin bowling, the golf simulator and our impressive Milon gym are other magnets for those active types.

BOWLS AND BALLS

WHILE THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT OF ANY PALM LAKE RESORT IS IMPRESSIVE, IT’S THE PEOPLE AND THE MYRIAD ACTIVITIES ON OFFER THAT REALLY MAKE THESE LOCATIONS THE THRIVING COMMUNITY LIFESTYLE RESORTS THAT THEY ARE. AND TOOWOOMBA’S RESORT IS HOME TO QUITE AN ACTIVE BUNCH...
