Dexter band becomes “H.J. Crosby Community Band of Dex-ter“
DEXTER - At the annual meeting of the Carl R. Cuthbert Community Band Foundation, members voted to change the band name to the H.J. Crosby Community Band of Dexter.
This change recognizes the band’s preservation and promo-tion of the works of Dexter-born composer Harold Josiah Crosby (1886-1920), who wrote over 50 pieces of music. It also better re-flects the diverse membership,
which expands beyond the town of Dexter. The new name is also distinguishable from the Dexter Community Band of Dexter, MI.
New board members were also elected. Lou Harper of Sanger-ville will serve as president, C. Tom Gerkovich III of Abbot as vice-president, and Jane Nep-tune of Guilford and Rick Jen-nings of St. Albans as represen-tatives.
The band wishes to thank the Wayside Theatre for summer re-hearsal space and held a benefit concert for the Theatre/Grange
at the Dexter Town Hall. The band is preparing for
the holiday season with weekly Tuesday 6 p.m. rehearsals at the Ridge View School music room, 175 Fern Rd in Dexter. New members of all abilities are always welcome. The band is in particular need of percussionists. Instrumental loan and instruc-tion are available. To assist with the expanding music library, vol-unteer “band aids”, requiring no musical skills, are needed.

pany in-store posters, signs, and other visible logos. The Star Store program works in combi-nation with NO BUTS! (Block-ing Underage Tobacco Sales), the Maine CDC program to stop the illegal sale of tobacco to minors.
Bud’s became a NO BUTS! store in April 2012, with assis-tance from HealthySV. Shortly after receiving the NO BUTS! recognition, a group of MCI Student Leadership Commit-tee (SLC) members approached Chris Petersen, the Pittsfield Store Manager, to discuss the Star Store program. Over the course of several months, the MCI - SLC worked with Bud’s Shop ‘n Save to reach the Star Store program standards.
“Bud’s is committed to support healthy environments for our lo-cal youth as they are our future customers, employees and com-
munity leaders,” said Petersen. “Working with enthusiastic young people from MCI is always exciting. We are proud to be help-ing to make our local community a healthy one.”
Involvement of youth is a key component of the Star Store program. youth receive special training and then they are the ones who make contact with stores, meet with managers, con-duct surveys, and then recom-mend changes in tobacco signage and promotion. The MCI/MSAD #53 Student Leadership Com-mittee hopes to engage other re-tailers in the surrounding area this school year to increase the number of Star Store retailers in Sebasticook Valley.
“Reducing the volume of ad-vertising that kids are exposed to can make a serious difference in preventing Maine’s youth from starting tobacco,” said Karen Hawkes, Director of HealthySV.
“We’re extremely proud of Bud’s accomplishment, the students’ work, and look forward to assist-ing the students and other local retailers to increase the number of Star Store certified stores in the area.”
HealthySV is a local Healthy Maine Partnership and commu-nity coalition based in Sebasti-cook Valley Health’s Community Health and Education Division. The HealthySV coalition helps people in Sebasticook Valley live healthier and better lives through programs that foster healthy lifestyle decisions.
Healthy Maine Partnerships is a collaborative effort among 26 local coalitions, the Maine DHHS (Maine CDC and Maine Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services) and DOE, sup-ported primarily by the Fund for Healthy Maine and federal grants from the US CDC and SAMHSA.

“Spending changes would eliminate need for ‘Tax Reform’”To the Editor:For years we’ve been told Maine needs “Tax Reform.” We’re told Maine’s tax code doesn’t produce a
steady stream of revenue and it is too volatile. Really? Granted, revenue streams into state coffers fluctu-ate and there is considerable difference between the highs and lows.
Rather than raising taxes, what would happen if instead of spending every dime when revenue is up, we reduced spending to income levels during slow times. That’s the way that most families budget. Then when the economy is good and revenue is up we could add some capital spending that we’ve been putting off and pay cash for it. We could avoid borrowing and interest expenses, and best of all we could finally get off this roller coaster of ever-increasing tax rates. I’m reminded of the bumper jack that came with my first car. It would go up just fine, but it wouldn’t go down. you’d jack up the car and change the tire then you’d have to push the car off the jack, and it would come crashing down. When do we come crashing down?
We don’t need tax reform. What we need is spending reform. A proposal to reform Maine’s tax code was defeated in the Legislature again this year. The idea was to
eliminate most of the sales tax exemptions and use the revenue to reduce income tax rates. It was very similar to the plan that was defeated at the polls just a couple of years ago. The thought of paying a six percent sales tax on groceries and to heat our homes alarmed many of us, and we managed to nip it in the bud. Perhaps if we did pay taxes on the essentials of life it would even out the flow of money to the state, but is paying taxes more important than feeding our families?
Even though “tax reform” has been soundly defeated time and time again, the Legislature is going to try to get it done a little at a time through the back door. A special Committee is going to be meeting later this month to find $40 million dollars in exemptions they can take away from us.
When you look at the items we don’t pay income tax on, one of the biggest is health insurance provided by our employers. That “costs” the state $151 million a year. If it were up to me we would exempt health insurance premiums paid by everyone, and if it were put to referendum I’ll bet the vote would be a re-sounding yes.
In addition to groceries and home heating we don’t pay sales tax when we go to the doctor or dentist. How would paying taxes on those items benefit anyone but big spenders in government? If a person buys a seeing eye dog there’s no sales tax on the animal. What’s wrong with that? If sales tax was added to municipal water bills it would add more than eight million dollars to the General Fund. Twenty million would come in if sales tax was charged on rental housing, fifteen million if we taxed prescription drugs. you begin to see why so many favor this approach to raising taxes. There’s real money involved.
Let’s please forget this idea and spend our time finding ways to get the necessary jobs of government done with existing revenues.
Senator Doug ThomasMember, Maine Legislature’s Taxation Committee, Ripley
“…saving our children’s education.”To the Editor:With everyone being cost-conscious in this economy, I would like to take a few moments of your time to
inform you how to make unbudgeted contributions to the local schools. And this can tie into recycling at the same time!
There are many products in our lives that we consume and then throw away the wrapper. Over two years ago the Dexter area schools began collecting empty juice pouches and turning them into cash. A return of 2¢ each doesn’t sound like much but they have received over $800 so far. This is a good deal be-cause you are already purchasing the product and now you do not have to throw away the wrapper. Just send it to school with your child so it may be turned into cash. In the past these pouches just laid in a land-fill to take forever to decompose. And there is no process for separating the aluminum from the plastic.
Now for the rest of the story. What is our cost for this program? NOTHING except volunteer time. But you don’t have to worry about
that either. The schools have some terrific volunteers. The cost of shipping is taken care of through Ter-racycle, the company where all of this takes place. All the returned items are up-cycled into new products that are then sold in some of the big box stores and also thru www.dwellsmart.com. Some of the items made are backpacks, pencil cases, lunch boxes, plant pots, waste baskets, fencing, picnic tables, notebooks, and clipboards. you can check out all of this on www.terracycle.net. Here are some other products that we are collecting for the same company.
All tape dispensers and cores, hot cereal pouches, humus containers, plastic pouches from cleaners, lo-tions, pens, markers, pumps and caps from lotions, cleaners, etc. personal care products (shampoo, condi-tioner, make-up containers, etc), energy bar wrappers, candy wrappers, potato chip and snack bags, dairy cups and plastic lids, yogurt, cream cheese, cottage or ricotta cheese, dip, margarine, sour cream, whipped topping, #5 containers, etc. please clean these first, toothpaste tubes and brushes, cheese packaging, Lunchable containers, and cereal bags, printed or not
Here are some more things:All Campbell’s product labels are continuing to be collected. The reward figures out to about one-half
cent per label. The upc’s are worth between 1 and 100 points each. Campbell’s, Prego, Swanson, V8, Pace, Pepperidge Farms, Post upc (all cereal and cereal bar), BIC upc, Pop Secret upc, Glad upc, and Wolf Gang Puck upc all figure into Campbell’s labels.
Ink cartridges, Toner cartridges, keyboards, mouse, webcams, Mp3 players, lap tops, and old cell phones also raise cash for schools.
Box Tops for Education earn 10¢ each. Can Tabs raise money for the Shriner’s Hospitals.Tyson frozen chicken bag tops with the A+ or a black box saying ‘support your school’ on them are worth
24¢. If there is a question about what to save just save the whole package. There is potential for hundreds of dollars to be earned in this area every year just from this item alone.
And then there is a new program called “Kellogs Family Rewards”. There are many ways of redeeming the points and schools are just one of the many ways. On the inside of the packaging is a 16 digit code. Just clip the code or send in the whole package. 1800 points equal one dollar!
And what does all this potential cash do for our children? It helps fund many small learning projects that individual classrooms probably would have to do without. Now think about that container that you just threw away. Do the math. If you save and send them to school or to Bud’s Shop ‘n Save in Dexter, where this volunteer also works, you could contribute financially to some child’s educational experience without spending any extra cash. And you helped the environment by keeping something out of the waste stream! A full list can be found at Bud’s. Just ask.
Thank you for saving for our children’s education. Jeff Crowell, Dexter Continued on PAGE 9

mer is coming to an end and Se-nior Network is gearing up for its 2013-2014 schedule! If you are a senior living or visiting in any of our area towns, please join us for a morning of friendship, good con-versation, a delicious meal and learning opportunities, games, cards – or just visiting! Every Monday and Thursday, Senior Network opens its doors at the Community Center room at 10:30 a.m. in the Dover-Foxcroft Mu-nicipal Building to area seniors.
Senior Network starts their meetings at 10:30 a.m. with their “visiting circle” – grabbing a cup of coffee and getting caught up on everyone’s news and community happenings. Luncheon starts typically around 11:20 a.m. and the program or games and cards start by 12:15 p.m. Everyone helps with clean-up and usually heads home between 1-1:30 p.m. Folks are welcome to come at any point in the morning and join in.
On Mondays, the Community Café is hosted by Eastern Area Agency on Aging (EAAA). This delicious, well balanced meal is offered for a contribution of up to $4/person. Following the meal, a variety of informational pro-

On Thursdays, everyone brings something to contribute to the Potluck Meal. Without any real planning of “who brings what” – this meal almost always ends up with a variety of meat and veg-etable dishes, breads and des-serts! So make your favorite dish or bring a can of fruit and join in the fun!
In October, Dick Brown from the Charlotte White Center will be on hand to speak about a new program this agency is of-fering to help seniors to stay in their homes. And, on October 17, a representative from the Maine American Association of Retired Persons will be on hand to talk about the services offered through AARP.
Senior Network has several volunteers and is always looking for more people to lend a hand. Volunteers help out in different ways, and may attend one day a month or more depending upon their preferences and availabil-ity.
There is no fee to attend Senior Network. The Municipal Build-

PITTSFIELD - Under early morning clear blue skies, mild temperatures and ideal condi-tions, runners and walkers of all abilities set out for the 5th Annual 5K Run/Walk to End Hunger event recently hosted by Sebasticook Valley Federal Credit Union. The event, one of many SVFCU holds through-out the year, was to raise funds that go directly to support the several food pantries in the Se-basticook Valley region. Race Director Kelley Carter reported that the 5K was a great success, which brought in box loads of non-perishable food items and netted proceeds of nearly $4,000. Carter stated that “thanks to the support of our many generous sponsors and the involvement of all the participants and so many volunteers, we exceeded our ex-pectations and had our best 5K so far.”
In addition to the runners and walkers who participated in the event, SVFCU would like to thank the following sponsors for making this our best year: A.E. Robinson Oil Company Inc. and Convenience Stores, Synergent, Varney Ford, Varney Chevro-let, Trademark Federal Credit Union, Bud’s Shop ‘n Save, Etna Auto Solutions, Tricorp Federal Credit Union, Sebasticook Fam-ily Doctors, The Eastern Gazette,
Healthy SV, F.A.R. & Beyond Lawncare, MacDonald Page, Le-one Concrete, Berg Sportswear, Rowell’s Auto Sales, Newport Motorsports.

taquis County Retired Educators met August 27 at the Bear’s Den with 18 members present. Presi-dent Gil Reynolds asked mem-bers to introduce themselves as some new members Rachel Page of Monson, Reba and David Mi-chaud of Dover-Foxcroft were present.
Gil led the Collect and Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, Gloria Burns read the secretary’s re-port with no corrections. Myrna Ricker gave the treasurer’s re-port noting the profit from the basket raffle at HomeComing
netted $252.41. This will go into the scholarship fund.
Janice Ellis reported on the Day of Caring. Janice contacted the Angels program at Charlotte White and we purchased $100 in school supplies. She and Minnie McCormick delivered the items and were pleased with the proj-ect. MEA-R donated the $100. Gil thanked the people who worked on the basket raffle.
While waiting for lunch to be served, Minnie McCormick led the group in singing old songs like “She’ll Be Coming Around the Mountain,” yankee Doodle, and many others.
Tarun Johns gave a report on her trip to the High Arctic where she visited schools and saw a need for supplies. She has sent school supplies and cloth at her own expense. She now has a group of women from Greenville-Rockwood helping with cloth. Her talk was very interesting and we hope she will be able to talk more and show pictures at a meeting next year.
Gil announced the next meet-ing will be September 24. David Mahoney will be the guest speak-er to discuss how Social Security affects teachers. The meeting was adjourned.

Thank YouFrom Fred and Karen Cookson and Their Family
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their generosity and support during our July 14th tragedy. Experiencing something as devastating as the fire is life altering. The outpouring
from all the communities and businesses, near and far, was humbling and overwhelming. We will be eternally grateful for everything that
was done for us because it relieved some of the stress. It also showed us just how lucky we are to live in this community with so many true friends. Our family would especially like to acknowledge all the brave firefighters who responded to the blaze. The dedication and unselfish
bravery of all these people who tried to save our home was remarkable.Currently we are living near the farm in a home generously offered to us by Charlie and Mina Shaw. This house is finally starting to feel
like home as we have begun to bake and can the few vegetables that were not destroyed by the fire. We diligently continue to work with the remaining animals and are trying to secure a safe place for them as
winter rapidly approaches.Even though the clean up of the debris has begun, future plans to rebuild on the farm site is unclear. Negotiations with the insurance company are still ongoing so building this year seems impossible.
Again, we want the thank everyone for their support, courage, compassion and generosity.
Sincerely,Fred and Karen Cookson

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Five 4-H clubs from Piscataquis Coun-ty, the Solon Pine Tree club from Somerset County, and the Mori-son Memorial School Kids Can Grow after school group from Penobscot County participated in the Piscataquis Valley Fair, which was held in Dover-Foxcroft last month.
There were educational club exhibits, a poster contest, and over 120 individual projects en-tered for display. In addition to the displays, children were invit-ed to learn about wind power by making “human powered air cir-culators” (also called fans), mak-ing pinwheels, and generating electricity using a small wind-mill. They could also learn about the effects of static electricity on a variety of common powdered substances. The Adventures in Health Science-Guilford group, took blood pressures for fair-go-ers on Friday.
The Mid-Maine Minutemen Boys and Girls Club won first place in the club exhibit entries with their interactive shooting sports education board. Second

place went to the Parkman Area Adventure Club for their mobile titled “Brainstorm”. Third place was claimed by the Adventures in Health Science-Greenville group for their poster about how to ban-dage a wound. Each of the clubs received a premium for their ex-cellent work.
The theme for this year’s poster contest was “A Century of Maine 4-H”. Like the individual project entries, the posters were judged using the Danish system. In the Danish system, entries are judged against a standard, rather than against other entries. Ex-cellent entries closest to the stan-dard receive a blue ribbon, red ribbons represent entries that have specific errors, and a white ribbon indicates that many im-provements would be needed to meet the standard.
In addition to the blue, red, and white ribbons, two individual project entries received purple Best In Show awards. This year those awards went to Shea-Lyn Moulton for her creative writing entry “Unsinkable” and to Tyler Libby for his display of a well-
equipped backpack for hiking. Both Shea-Lyn and Tyler are members of the Parkman Area Adventure Club.
In addition to the exhibition hall, 4-H is also involved in Ani-mal Land. Some of the animals there belonged to 4-H mem-bers, who helped to care for the animals and taught the public about them. This year fair-goers could see a miniature horse, a miniature donkey, chickens and roosters along with 17 chicks that hatched out at the fair, rab-bits, and a pig. Pigs from the pig scramble stayed at Animal Land until their new owners were ready to take them home.
There are many people who volunteer their time to make the fair possible. The Retired Teach-ers want to thank everyone who organized and cared for the ani-mals at Animal Land, the judges who evaluated all the entries in the exhibit hall, the parents who brought their children and helped out with the activities, and the Master Gardeners who assisted in the exhibit hall and brought their expertise to share.

Full-Time Recreation Mechanic On Duty
“Good News!”To the Editor:It was standing room only at the Sangerville Fire Station Wednesday night (September 18th). After a
little over an hour of discussion the residents of the Town of Sangerville voted 2 – 1 (86 – 40) to enact the proposed Community Bill of Rights Ordinance (RBO).
Many thanks to you all who took part in this grass roots demonstration of true democracy. Whether you were part of the concerned citizens group (SCRG) who worked unbelievably hard to research and write the ordinance or whether you helped by spreading the word door to door, chatted with neighbors, wrote letters to the editor, made phone calls or sent emails, posted or displayed road signs, attended the dessert & discussion information meetings, asked questions or made comments at the public hearing, or just cast your vote at the Special Town Meeting you were all important parts of this historic process and event.
Melissa Randall, one of our “Selectmen”, remarked about the vote, “This is a refreshing breath of energy for Sangerville”. Someone else commented at the Special Town Meeting, “This Ordinance is a first brick for building a foundation of strength for our town to keep it the way it is now, the way we love it.”
I am very proud to be a citizen of the “New” Sangerville and I’m glad to have Sangerville back in the news...GOOD news!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!Cynthia Hall, Sangerville

CORINTH – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has an-nounced that the Department has made a payment of $3,081 to Corinth Wood Pellets, LLC, to produce wood pellets to support the production of advanced bio-fuel.
USDA is making nearly $15.5 million in payments to 188 pro-ducers through the Advanced Biofuel Payment Program. USDA Rural Development Acting under Secretary Doug O’Brien made the announcement on Vilsack’s behalf in Omaha, Nebraska, at the National Advanced Biofuels Conference. The United States Department of Agriculture re-mains focused on carrying out its mission, despite a time of significant budget uncertainty. “Producing advanced biofuels is a major component of the drive to take control of America’s en-ergy future by developing domes-tic, renewable energy sources,” O’Brien said. “These payments represent the Obama Adminis-tration’s commitment to support an ‘all-of-the-above’ energy strat-
egy.”USDA Rural Development
State Director Virginia Manuel said, “USDA Rural Develop-ment’s ongoing investments in Maine’s four wood pellet manu-facturing companies is important and helps to sustain the growth of Maine’s vital biofuel industry, supports jobs and replaces use of fossil fuels with clean renew-able biomass energy in many of Maine’s homes, businesses, and non-profit institutions.”
The funding is being provided through USDA’s Advanced Biofu-el Payment Program, which was established in the 2008 Farm Bill. Under this program, pay-ments are made to eligible pro-ducers based on the amount of advanced biofuels produced from renewable biomass, other than corn kernel starch. Examples of eligible feedstocks include but are not limited to: crop residue; animal, food and yard waste; veg-etable oil; and animal fat.
O’Brien noted that today’s an-nouncement serves as another reminder of the importance of
USDA programs for rural Ameri-ca and a reminder of the need for Congress to get a comprehensive Food, Farm and Jobs Bill done as soon as possible.
“Job seekers in rural America need new and expanded invest-ments in renewable energy, biofuel and bio-based product manufacturing – all of which can help create jobs in rural areas,” said O’Brien.
Through the Advanced Bio-fuel Payment Program and other USDA programs, the Depart-ment is working to support the research, investment and infra-structure necessary to build a strong biofuels industry that cre-ates jobs and broadens the range of feedstocks used to produce renewable fuel. More than 290 producers in 47 states and terri-tories have received $211 million in payments since the program’s inception. It has supported the production of more than 3 billion gallons of advanced biofuel and the equivalent of more than 36 billion kilowatt hours of electric energy.

MONSON - The Town of Mon-son has welcomed Film Forward, an international touring pro-gram that offers film screenings, workshops, and discussions with filmmakers. Film Forward is an initiative of Sundance Institute and four U.S. federal cultural agencies.
Film Forward will travel to only eight locations worldwide this year. This is the first time these films will be screened in Monson. Monson is scheduled to be the last stop on this year’s tour and the final opportunity for the public to take advantage of this free cultural event.
The goal of Film Forward is to build communities and engage audiences through film and to use it as a vehicle for cultural dialogue. The program extends beyond the screen to create audi-ence interaction. The unique dia-logue that happens at Film For-ward events can affect change in attitudes and perceptions. Film Forward brings artists and au-diences together to experience a story in hopes of gaining under-standing, realizing commonali-ties and challenging perspectives of issues that may divide us. Film Forward will provide area students a unique opportunity to engage in discussions with
award-winning film makers. Beginning September 26, the
eight films will be screened at the Monson Community Center at 35 Greenville Road in Mon-son. Michael Gottwald, producer of Academy Award nominated “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and Laura Nix, the filmmaker for the documentary “The Light in her Eyes” will attend the pro-gram in Monson to participate in post-screening discussions. Gottwald and Nix will also be participating at screenings held at four local high schools - Green-ville High School, Piscataquis Community Secondary School, Foxcroft Academy, and Hermon High School.
The screenings held at the Monson Community Center are free and are open to the public. The evening screenings held at Greenville and Hermon High Schools are also free and open to the public. Area residents are encouraged to attend and partici-pate in this cultural event.
For more information, see the color schedule elsewhere on this page, or call the Monson Town Office 997-3641. For a full sched-ule of events in Maine visit www.sundance.org/filmforward or www.monsonmaine.org.

CRUISE IN TO END HUN-GER - This year’s Cruise In to End Hunger was held August 10 at the Maine Highland Federal Credit Union Dexter office parking lot. Approxi-mately 80 antique and classic cars were on display and an Elvis Tribute Artist, EP Rock, took the stage for a one-hour Elvis concert. Proceeds for the barbeque lunch benefit-ted MHFCU’s Campaign for Ending Hunger.
