It was great to see a tweet from the 4ths oppo Bury St Edmunds saying well done to the team and thanks for a great tea and a jug of beer. Well done Richard and the team. Winning is important but playing the game well is equally important in my view. Match Reports

Ladies 1's v Oxford Hawks 2's Saturday 13

th January

Lost 2 - 3

Traumatic Return I have managed to avoid DOD for a good few years, but alas, first game back after no hockey for 6 months, and I make a spectacular come back, if you've seen me play, you know that make a lot of strange sounds when I make a mistake or f**k up... this was one of those occasions. To the point that I'm pretty sure for 30 seconds the whole pitch stopped and was in shock as to what I was trying to do, except for Brownie, who I could hear giggling next to me. Anywaaaay! On to our game, first post Xmas game and we take on Oxford Hawks, who, if you have read our match reports, we didn't do particularly well against the first time round. We can say we had a few players missing and it was early on in the season, etc, but that would take away from the people playing that day, which isn't fair. We just weren't good enough that day. This time round though, we played superbly! Some beautiful hockey! Calm, composed, positive all round performance.

ALL OUR YESTERYEARS

Most of you “Young ‘uns” will not have heard of the “Amersfort Challenge” so be prepared to be enlightened! It is the brainchild of our esteemed President – Chris Clarke! What does a hockey enthusiast, who has been there and done it in the hockey world, DO when he has a bit a bit of surplus land and all other possible uses for the land have been catered for? Why, he turns the land into a Hockey pitch of course! And this is exactly what Chris did! In a “Eureka” moment he said to himself (and possibly to Brenda), I know, I will set up an annual hockey tournament and I will call it the “Amersfort Challenge” And for this to work I will need a hockey pitch. And it will be covered in grass so that even the Golden Oldies will be able to play on it. And this is exactly what he did. So every Summer, from just before the start of the new Millennium, this tournament takes place in a sleepy Hertfordshire town called Berkhamsted. You may have heard of it. And in the inaugural tournament, a Festival Match took place between players from the 20th Century playing against players from the 21

st Century.

It was sheer “poetry” in slow motion!! Our Chairman, Rob Riddleston, officiated and ensured that the match was an honourable DRAW! You might recognise some of the protagonists in the picture. But in case you don’t. In the Blue shirts (the lighter shade if Black and White) from left to right are Graham Pile, Des Francis, Ian Fitzgerald, Chris Clarke, Rex Antony, Mel Carter and Sean O’Sullivan In the Red shirts (the darker shade) from left to right are Vijay Kumar, Sarosh Talati, Lloyd Wood, Paul Pech and Laurence Taylor Incidentally, some of the players in the pictures represented Eastcote in the 1960’s, when England won the World Cup in Football and a Group called “The Beatles” held sway in the music world! I never remember details of the game, as many of my team mates can back me up when I say, I struggle to know what the end score was, butttt! I did this time, but still no details. With thanks to Capitan Len, I have been told this was the order of goals... They scored, then Mac did to equalize at half time. Mac then got our second, and Hawks lobbed Pooky who got a tiny stick edge on it, unfortunately not enough to get it over the goal. Hawks then got their third and winning goal right at the end of the game. We lose the game after one of our best performances, especially the first game after Xmas. Well done ladies, let's keep it going for the rest of the season! MOM went to Mac for her goals and great play, good one Mac Signing out, Missy xx Men's 1's v OMT 1's Saturday 13

Not on my pitch! I was very much looking forward to the return to Saturday hockey. We had a good opposition close to my home in wonderful surroundings. I was a little ropy from the night before (my brother was leaving the country for good) which isn’t a great start but I had to see him off. With a mild hangover the cold was not welcomed and all my excitement about the day had been ruined especially when Sam told me that I might have to play centre-mid for a stint (please come home Mark). Regardless of this downward spiral of emotions I was suffering from I thought ‘it’s ok, we’ve got this’. When we were waiting in the changing rooms for Sleeman to arrive (with shirts) we were all discussing the potential of them being clean – like hell they were. They smelt like a bag of shirts that had been festering in a bag together over Christmas……..because they had. Oh he had cleaned one shirt, the one he was wearing! The game started at some point around 11.15ish and finished at 1.15 with us victorious (3-2)! I can’t remember many of the goals apart from that I was excellent! The reason I cannot remember much because the game was overshadowed by the several cards and incidences. The reason the game went on for so long was because there were many cards! I think 5 or 6 of our players were given greens. Sleeman was given a yellow for swearing at Sprakey……………that’s a new one! Sam was given a yellow card for a very upset youngster losing his cool and starting on him. I was then yellow carded for calming him down. This was turned over by the time I got to the bench because Joe Gray and another of their players explained I was defusing the situation. Joe Gray (M1’s) captain) described my performance as mature – Mega lolz!

It was an odd day, a day not to dwell on. Never the less we won, see you next week! SR Eagles v Thame 3's Saturday 13

th January

Drew 1 - 1

Old Fathers We lined up with an attacking intent of 3-4-3 with two u14 colts Vivek and Maccon paired with the “mature” Alan playing as the centre forward. Eastcote started brightly with Vivek combining well with Suranga on the right of midfield and Sati in the middle. The team kept possession well with several neat triangle of passes. Sati went on a mazy dribble into the D to win a short corner, which struck by Graham D rebounded to Suranga who scored from close range. Eastcote deserved the lead and kept threatening with Vivek excelling on the right. On one occasion Suranga crossed for Vivek to take a shot at goal , the umpire blew instantly on the ball bouncing off a defenders foot, not noticing that it had fallen to Maccon to slot into the goal. No advantage played. We went into half time having controlled the game with effective repelling of a predominantly youthful opposition by our experienced back line of Dick, Mike and Dan. The second half Thame attacked in more numbers forcing several shorts. The midfield of Ashley, Graham D, Sati and Suranga fighting hard began to arrest the tide, Ashley and Maccon combined well on the left to gain another short corner, with Alan a constant threat upfront. Thame got back into the game with a soft goal from a free hit that found an unmarked forward who finished from close range. The game ebbed and flowed with Graham P making some fine tackles. Eventually Eastcote gained another short corner that Sati struck, the ball hit a defender’s foot on the line just inside the post. Initially the umpire gave a short, after consulting the other umpire a flick was awarded. This took several minutes enough for Sati to go cold and make a hash of the flick. A shame as Eastcote deserved a victory for the quality of the hockey played. With Vivek and Suranga particularly outstanding. The team consistently strung more than 4/5 passes together and were very effective in keeping possession. A very good team performance that bodes well of the rest of the season. Setting the tone for the weekend In the late afternoon under the floodlights at Eastro, the men’s 4’s took on Staines 3’s with 12 men. After previously losing 2-0 away to the team at the start of the season the team knew it wouldn’t be an easy game however also a game which was in their grasp if we took the play to Staines.

With that thought, Eastcote took hold of the play and with a couple of well placed passes they were quickly up 2-0. However, down by two goals Staines we picked their game and began press our back line further with Keith stopping their passages of play with some crucial tackles. The last ten before half time were positive with more opportunities within their D but unfortunately were not converted. At halftime the score was still 2-0 and with an inspiration team chat and some water we were back on the pitch confident of putting the game to bed. Some renewed pressure on their back line and running into their gaps meant that we had plenty of good opportunities from both 1-on-1’s with the keeper to short corners. The score line quickly moved more in our direction with Jas putting several more in the back of the net. The final score was 6-0 to Eastcote with Jas Nijhar scoring 5 and Gurdeep Lota scoring 1, DOD was Josh Tate for forgetting a playing shirt and XXX as man of the match. A good win which set the tone for the weekend and the cup game the next day against Bury St Edmonds. JT Men’s 4s VS Bury St Edmunds 4s EH cup round 2 Sunday 14

th January

Won 6 - 0

12 men 6 goals 12 men strong and true turned out on Sunday afternoon to face a rescheduled game against Bury St Edmunds in the second round of the EH cup tier 4. Once over the initial pleasure of seeing men's 2s win 5-0 we allowed ourselves a short warm-up and got underway with the novelty of 2 appointed umpires. It is worth noting at this point that or home hand on Saturday and jaunt to Brunel for Sunday meant we had not travelled much this weekend. Our opposition had a nearly 200 mile round trip on Sunday after 120 miles on Saturday. Despite the luxury of a 17 seater minibus they were not going to be as fresh as us. From the first whistle we took advantage and attacked hard we were up quickly and followed up with a second before the oppo could get going. First half ended 3-0 and we hadn't been threatened too much. Second half was more of the same. Bury found their legs and worked harder and more efficiently o the second half with their youngsters and a couple of their adults turning on the skill. At 5-0 we felt safe to press on for a 6

th and got it.

No DoD or Mom as this was a team effort. Lawro So best win and first up on Eastcote’s match of the day on Saturday and then the same on Sunday. Must be nailed on for chairman's ten of the week, back to you Gary.......

Lost 0(0) - 2(1)

. . .a new start to the Year, not . . . A surprisingly sunny day at Brunel saw us welcome the local OMT vets for a pre-league friendly. We had a slight surfeit of players so offered them one to make for a more even contest. As this was the first meeting of these 2 teams neither side had a real idea of the opposition, but it rapidly transpired that the rumours that OMTs hadn’t lost this year could well be true, as they passed around us with a smoothness that we have yet to discover this year. The first half was one of in which the visitors had 70% possession and more clear chances than the PMs but could only breach a busy PM defence once when an overlap led to a free player just beyond the P-spot and he found the corner. The second half was more even and got a little scrappy as the PMs tried to wrangle their way back into the fray but were having no luck in front of goal. Short corners were very rare in the game with the PMs having a total of 4 and the OMTs 2, one of which they scored from with a very well struck shot into the corner, although the post man got his stick to, but such was the force of the shot he failed to keep it out. This was a very competitive match but produced a lack lustre PM performance as they tried to clear the cobwebs from their New Year celebratory brains, hopefully it will put them in better fettle for the league game next week. There were no real standout performances from the PMs so no MoTM this week. “Màlmand” Ladies 5's v Teddington 6's Saturday 13

aiming for significant improvements this year, by which I mean if we come away with literally no points at all in this half that will be better than the -2 points we carry forward from the first half. All we need to do is turn up and send the form in on time and we've improved. We started well on Saturday, maintaining our league position, not having any points taken off us, introducing another 2 new names to our list of players, and conceding half as many goals as we did in the first fixture against the side we played (Teddies, all blonde, pink, young, fast, slick and surprisingly hard). We welcomed back Leanne who seems to be on a weekend break from her world tour and Jackie who is learning how to run using only one side of her body (I've been doing this for years, no big deal, it's just that Jackie actually knows how to run and hence finds it frustrating). Anyhoo, we played at bloody 3pm, dangerously close to bedtime in my view, we looked very smart (new tops), Coach Tray sent us out with some stirring words and after a bit of early confusion which resulted in an early goal or two, settled down and defended well. Fi was great in goal, Alice was tireless in midfield, Anna did some cool stuff and we all looked nice in our new tops ... Yours etc Ladies 2s vs PHC Chiswick 2's Saturday 13

th January

Won 2-0

Barnstorming Finish Saturday saw the Ladies 2s take on Chiswick at home. Another early start meant that some people didn't show up to the team talk in the best of states, and by some people, I mean Lucy C (Tip; don't spend the night in A&E the night before a game). With the game plan clearly laid out, we headed to the pitch to get warmed up. Armed with Els' trusty speaker, music blaring and striding in style in our matching jumpers, we definitely looked the part. Then the music suddenly stops? Oh no, Els had forgotten to charge the speaker again! Oh well, on to the game. Looking back at the last time we played Chiswick, we didn't want to give coops any reason to use his size 11s to boot our water bottles into the fence, this meaning we weren't going to wait until the last play of the game to win it. To be honest, the first half of the game was kind of hazy for me so I couldn't report much on that. Apologies! However the second half brought lots of excitement, winning a fair few short corners, we were bound to score. And that we did, Lucy Lavers getting a great deflection. 1-0.

Strong defending from our back line meant Chiswick had very few chances in our D and the chances they did have were easily cleared by the fantastic Lili. The build up play from the back led to our second and final goal, this time the ball was pushed across the D to an eagerly awaiting Lucy Carter ready to deflect the ball into the bottom corner, and that she did! (Trying to make up for her being late to the meet time and not showing up in a very good state). 2-0! MoM went to Emily Young DoD had a couple of nominations. Amy Sharman getting a few noms for her dramatic fall after the ball slowly rolled onto her foot. However the majority vote going to Lucy C for her adventures on Friday night! Top of the table clash next week when we face Harrow! Bring it on! Lucy Carter Ladies 4's v Southgate 4's Saturday 13

Gate Ajar Ladies 4s return match against Southgate resulted in a 3-1 loss. our goal scored by Sophia. However this week we played as a team and held the majority of the possession especially in the first half creating many more chances than previous games. In forthcoming weeks I hope to be writing we capitalised on those chances and have bagged some much needed points

Get rid of those aches and pains and recover from games more

As manager of the England over 65’s who have just won European Gold at Southgate let me share with you one of our secrets, that could benefit all of us who play or have played sport. It would in fact benefit anyone with issues around back pain, arthritis, and/or lack of energy.

We have been supported by “Xenca" for the past 4 years who have recommended two products to us and which the majority of the squads are using. I swear by them. The first is Collagen and the second Five a day + V. Both are natural products. If you have a club member in the squad talk to them about it. If interested to research or buy to try, go to www.xencahockey.com Peter Crayford England GGM Manager

Stick Appeal Do you have any old sticks for children aged 11 and upwards? One of our Eastcote Ladies Captains is starting up an After School Club at their school

and needs some old sticks.

Please contact Gina on [email protected] or [email protected] if you can donate any and we can arrange to collect them.

Under 10 Girls at Crystal Palace

Both teams did well winning two and losing two each. Still displaying Eastcote's age old ability to make umpteen passes in the D without actually taking a shot. If we can get this sorted, things will go very well so something for the coaches to work with. Thank you to Adam M for helping to run one of the teams and thank you to parents for making the long journey. Photo back row from left to right: Minnie, Bella, Sienna, Ella, Willow, Freya, Paige Front row: Lily-Grace, Imogen, Alice, Julia, Amy, Ava, Erin. From Colin Carter (who is still recovering from having given a lift there and back to 5 of the squad - two and half hours in total! I didn't know it was possible to overdose on gossip. Hilarious!)

Under 12 Girls at Chertsey

3 wins from 3 for the Girls Under 12s Sadly the frost and snow of the 10th December called off our last tournament of 2017, but the re-arranged opportunity came quickly in 2018 for the unlucky 10 who were ready and waiting before Christmas, until Mother Nature intervened. Despite the recent season to overindulge not sure if I can question whether the girls did on mince pies but in goals they certainly helped themselves to plenty on Sunday! The Four team tournament saw Staines, Chertsey and Aldershot & Farnham come up against Eastcote. Sadly we were only able to take one team so we gave the girls that missed out during South England's cold snap a chance to try again. Next time we hope to give the other girls in the training squad the same opportunity.

The EastcoNet 15 20th January 2018

Results: Eastcote 7 Staines 1 Eastcote 3 Chertsey 0 Eastcote 3 Aldershot & Farnham 0 The above was achieved with a lot of great team work, lots of running and a real desire to chase down on occasions lost causes. This led to a wave of goals with Sarah Harrison getting 5 including a hatrick in the first game where braces from Amina Byron Nour and Ishwari Malde completed the first rout. The girls continued to show their strength and hard effort in the other 2 matches with Harrison, Byron Nour and Malde again finding the net collectively with Ishwari getting another pair against hosts Chertsey in the middle match. The trio of goal scorers were very well supported by the other teammates pushing hard for goals, winning short corners and getting crosses in from which the goal scorers benefited from. Well done to 10 girl squad that included Kaya Forest, Mina Shafiei, Anna Davies, Jayden Gasper, Phoebe Gardner, Sarah Harrison, Mya Carter, lshwari Malde, Isha Patel and Amina Byron Nour. All thoroughly earned cookies and milky ways! Well Done Girls ........ but you have set a pretty high bar now!

Special thanks to the parents and family who cheered on the team as well as Ashling's halftime oranges! Adrian
