NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT By Ed Halpin, PPCC Prez

Hello PPCC Crew!! Well, even though the calendar doesn’t yet re-flect it, summer really is in full swing. With all of the car shows, rallies, and get togethers, it’s a great time to have a Cor-vair! Before we know it, it’ll be October, and the snow and cold weather will be back, so I would encourage everyone to finish your projects as soon as possible, get those Vairs either out of the gar-age or back on the road, and have some fun. Over the last month, we’ve enjoyed a great time at Monument Lake with the Fish-ing Cruise, as well as a fantastic Tri-State down in Chama, NM. The CNM group really did a bang-up job in hosting this year’s event.

Next year, the Tri-State will be held in beautiful Durango, Colorado, hosted by the Rocky Mountain CORSA club. We know the RMC will do a great job in putting that together, and the PPCC will once again shoot to win the traveling Attendance/Participation Award. Upcoming for June is the PPCC Rally & Poker Run. Kelina (your Webmaster) and I have put in a lot of time and effort to make this a fun and enjoyable event for the Club. Unfortunately, last year’s event was can-celled due to zero participation. To ensure that doesn’t happen again, this year I’ve in-vited several other local car clubs to partici-pate, so come out and have a nice drive. You just might win the big prize! Welcomes, thanks, and recognition of a very special visitor, Nancy Feldman’s grandson, Austin. Thanks for coming out!

Recognition of updates to the Club’s Website—Kelina has been doing a wonderful job of making sure our website is up to date and relevant for all of our members. We’ve received numerous comments from folks both inside and out of our club that it looks fantastic and is a fun and functional place to hang out for a bit on-line.

Approval of Minutes From April’s meeting, yup, we’re good!

Treasurer’s Report—John wasn’t in attendance, but we should still have some money in the kitty.

Membership Update—Bob was not in attendance, so no membership report, however Ed mentioned that he is talking with several folks about joining up with us, some with Vairs, some without. Ed reiterated his goal for the Club to add one new member each month to ensure we’re growing instead of dying out. Everyone in the Club owns this goal, so please get out there and make us visible in the community. A specific shout-out to the Feasels and Breaults for making sure folks know we’re in town and active! Thanks for everything you’re doing to drive membership!

John G. wasn’t in attendance, so no Collector Car Council of Colorado (CCCC) Report this month, however Ed is forwarding the meeting minutes of that group out to the PPCC membership, via email, and fielding any questions folks might have, along with John G.

Randy K. brought in the mail; Betty Jo Benzel’s April newsletter was returned undeliverable, so if anyone knows a good address for her, please pass it along to the Editor (Ed Halpin). Old Business:

PPCC FISHING CRUISE & PICNIC Monument Lake, CO

Saturday, May 17th turned out to be a fantas-tic day for some early morning fishing and a heck of a nice Club BBQ. Cheryl and I started out from Castle Rock around 6:30am to ensure we had a chance to claim a good picnic spot on the lake, for later on in the day. Earlier in the month, I had called the town of Monument to see what the process was for reserving the picnic areas and they said there was no process, first-come, first-served, so we made sure we were there early.

The early morning weather was “brisk”, but it did warm up quickly. As the lines went in the water, bets were made on who would pull out the first fish, who would have the big-gest, and who would wind up catching the most.

As we got started, David & Mary Ellen pulled up, and were quickly in the water as well (their fishing

lines, not them specifically)

Both earlies and lates made the drive out to Monu-ment Lake. Cheryl Halpin drove the ‘60, Ed drove a ‘67 sedan, Darren Darnell brought his beautiful blue

convertible, and Nancy Feldman rounded out the bunch with her maroon coupe!

It wasn’t too long before we found out who would catch the first fish; Cheryl!! A nice Brown Trout, measuring in at 13”, caught on a bobber line with a live worm. Darren said it looked like it weighed in at about 35 pounds. We decid-ed that was a fair as-sessment, so we logged the catch and kept on fishing. Club VP Randy Karl hit the shoreline with us, but didn’t drop a line due to no license on hand. Webmaster Kelina also graced us with her presence and hu-mored Mom and Dad with holding a pole, but wasn’t fishing either since she hadn’t picked up a license, and generally doesn't like to touch worms. The lake was now filling up with other an-glers, and it was funny to see the other folks switching from their lures to bobbers after Cheryl caught her first fish. Unfortunately for the rest of us, this was going to be the trend for the morning. (continued on pg. 5)

It didn’t take long for the next fish to be on the line. Once again, it was Cheryl bringing in the catch, this time it was a 10” Rainbow Trout.

And so this went on for the rest of the morning. Cheryl casting, catching a fish, us watching her do her little happy dance, and then do-ing it again. With the writing on the wall, several of us hit the cooler and cracked a couple beers or sodas and just enjoyed the scenery.

As the fishing time was winding down, we fired up the grill and got to cooking lunch. Our resident “Grill Sergeant” Randy was raring to go with spatula in hand. On the menu this day were hot dogs and hamburgers, chips and salads (both macaroni and potato), as well as drinks, all pro-vided by the Club for those in attendance. We had a quick meeting to take care of Club business, and provide reminders for a number of the upcoming events. Then it was time for the fishing awards!

Closing out the afternoon, it was clear that everyone had a fun time. It was great to see Nancy and her grandson Austin drive up in her Monza. Knowing she had been having issues with fuel system, it was good to see the car, and her, back on the road. Since that event, I know that David & Mary Ellen have been back down to the lake fishing, and it’s on Cheryl and my short list for this month’s things to do. Thanks to all who had the chance to come out. For those of you who missed it, mark the calendars for next year, cause we’ll be back out there, with a unified goal to BEAT CHERYL!!

As recently as a few years ago, John Fitch still entertained thoughts of putting his Fitch Phoenix sports car into production. He asked people on the streets whether the design still had its appeal, and he believed any modern front-wheel-drive drivetrain would work well in it. Those dreams apparently died with Fitch in 2012, however, and his Phoenix went on the auc-tion block last weekend, and beat its estimate, sell-ing for $253,000, including premiums. A HEADS UP ON OBTAINING NEW COLLECTOR TAGS

Sounds like there is a new process at the Col-orado DMV, in respect to getting a new set of Collector series plates, so Steve Goodman want-ed to share his recent experience with us all so we wouldn’t be caught off guard: “… interesting issue in April, I had to apply for new plates on the ‘68 and transfer from Ruth. Motor vehicle told me the collector plates would be mailed to me, as the only plate kept on the shelf is now the green/white plate. "Activation" instruction would be included too. Plates ar-rived and delivered by UPS and left on my front porch in plain sight all day. Needless to say any-one can steal the plates and activate and place on their car in my name. This is statewide.” [Steve Goodman] Thanks for the heads-up, Steve. I need to pick up tags for the ‘64 here next week, so I’ll at least be prepared for the process. Ed

Most of you may have heard by now that John Dawson (President of the RMC Club) and his wife Karen lost their son, Shawn, on May 14th. Shawn was only 28 years old at the time of his passing. As the Dawson family continues to deal with this tragic event, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

30th TRI-STATE CORVAIR MEET, Chama, New Mexico

This year’s Tri-State, hosted by the Corvairs

of New Mexico crew, was a huge success! For

those of you who didn’t have the opportunity to

attend, please use this

ful, which was fine

with me as the Hard

Luck Award is not

one that I aspire to

receive.

The ‘67 4-door

ran fantastic, and I

used the trip as an

opportunity to check

out the gas mileage;

we averaged 26 mpg

going down and al-

most 30 mpg on the

way back. I guess

going north was actu-

ally going down hill.

11am Friday morn-

ing, there were al-

ready a dozen or

more cars in the park-

ing lot.

John Wiker met us

in the hospitality

room, got us regis-

tered quickly, and

filled us in on the

folks had put as lot of work into making this a

weekend to remember. Baked goodies lined the

wall, and the sales

area for T-shirts was

organized and ready

for business.

30th TRI-STATE CORVAIR MEET, Chama, New Mexico (cont.)

Many of us finished off Friday evening by

having dinner and drinks at the local saloon,

which happened to have live music that night.

Saturday’s

car show was

great. 36 Cor-

vairs were on

display, with

several that we

hadn’t seen

before, includ-

ing Jim Reich’s

2-door wagon.

Seven different car clubs were represented this

year, and as expected, the PPCC had a respecta-

ble number of folks on hand (18).

After the car show, there were a couple tour

options offered. We

opted for the Tierra

Wools Factory tour

(picture at the top of

the page) where we

were introduced to

the wool weaving

process, from start to

finish. An impres-

sive operation, and

extremely informa-

tive. At the conclu-

sion of the tour, I

was asked by our

tour host if they could

see the cars. Never

one to miss chatting it

up, I gave the four

folks a quick tour of

the Vairs, and then we

were off to the next

adventure.

The banquet was

entertaining and the

food was excellent.

Russ McDuffie did a

bang-up job as the

event’s MC. Great

Job Russ!! We had a

couple guest speakers

from the town coun-

cil, and then on to the

awards. For a full

Steve Gongora of CNM, have the unique distinc-

tion of being the only two individuals who have

attended all 30 Tri-State gatherings. Congratula-

It’s clear that

Ruth is very

much missed

by everyone

who knew her.

The winner of the traveling Attendance Tro-

phy was no surprise, won by the CNM club

(picture at the top of the page), with PPCC com-

ing in 3rd, again. We really need to rock the at-

tendance next year in Durango so we pick up that

award! For 2016, if we hosted he Tri-State in

Colorado Springs, do you think we’d have

enough people in attendance to win?

While he didn’t win the overall Long Distance

award, PPCC members John Hesco and family

made their annual trek from Greybull, Wyoming.

This year, John and his wife were accompanied

by his daughter and grand-daughter. A great

looking family of three generations!

Since I’m a

member of all three

clubs (PPCC, RMC, and

CNM), I was caught a little

part of the Club’s initiation.

That was lots of fun!!

The ride home involved

picking up a freshly pur-

chased ’64 Spyder, but

that’s a story for another

Unless you fabricate your own car parts, most every person involved with the Corvair hobby has, at one time or another, reached out to Clark’s Corvair Parts. As luck, and planning would have it, while in Massachusetts last month visiting family, a couple of our newest members, Larry & Dayna Breault, made a trip over to the beautiful hamlet of Shelburne Falls, home to Clark’s warehouse and shops. They were nice enough to text me, with a cool photo of Larry out front of their place. Maybe I can convince them to share their thoughts on the trip in one of the upcoming Drip Lines. Safe travels Larry & Dayna!! Thanks for thinking of us while on the road.

fund raiser for the Collector Car Club of Colorado (CCCC), or which the PPCC is a member. Taking place on

the Havana Motor Mile, the Poker Run is only one of many events. Live bands, lots of classis cars, this is one

Saturday, June 14th @ 10:00am-3:00pm: “Castle Rock Cruise In 2014” This is a fun get together,

held annually in beautiful downtown Castle Rock and sponsored by the Vintage Car Club of Castle Rock. Lots

of cool cars, and typically only one or two Corvairs (mine and a member of the RMC). Come on out for this

show and lets show some rear engine pride! You will love the variety of vehicles on display. For more infor-

Sunday, June 22nd @ 9:00am: “PPCC Rally – Poker Run” This “gimmick” rally will cover a

course set up with 5 designated checkpoints and scattered with questions to be answered along each leg of the

run. At each checkpoint, teams will pick up an envelope, which will have a playing card in it. Upon completion

of the rally, when we meet up for lunch, teams will open their 5 envelopes at the same time and display their

hand. Best poker hand will win a prize. The team that answers the most questions correctly will also win a

prize. Lots of fun to see a bunch of Corvairs running across the local countryside. Several other car clubs are

being invited to attend as well. $5 entry per car to cover prizes. All vehicles welcome to participate!!

Monday, July 21–25: 2014 CORSA International Convention - “Corvair Expo” This year, the

national convention is in beautiful Tacoma, Washington. For more information, check out: http://

PPCC New Member Application The Pikes Peak Corvair Club, Inc., (PPCC) was formed in September of 1977 by a group of enthusiasts from the Pikes Peak Region to preserve the Corvair automobile & related artifacts. Ownership of a Corvair is not required for membership. The PPCC is a chartered chapter of the CORVAIR SOCIETY OF AMERICA (CORSA), and is registered as a Nonprofit Corporation with the State of Colorado. The purpose of the PPCC is to encourage the acquisition, preservation, restoration, and enjoyment of Corvairs, promote sociability among members of the organization, and to promote the exhibition of Corvairs and related vehicles. Monthly meetings are typically held on the 3rd Sunday of each month at 9:30 a.m. Please refer to the most recent Club newsletter, “The Drip Line” for the latest meeting information, or call the Club President directly. Joining the PPCC is important whether you are just beginning to restore your Corvair, or if you have a finished vehicle, ready to drive and having fun. You’ll find the local knowledge of technical resources and available parts invaluable for any project you undertake. Dues for the PPCC are $25.00 per year, payable each year during the month of January for the current year. New members joining after July 1 will pay one-half (1/2) the annual dues for that year. CORSA membership is a prerequisite for membership in the PPCC. CORSA dues shall be paid directly to CORSA, and verification of that payment will be provided to the PPCC Membership Chair within 30 days of the PPCC Application. Failure to provide that verification will result in the termination of the membership application.
