VOLUME VII ISSUE XNEWS FOR THE RESIDENTS OF THE DOMINION OCTOBER 2015

In last year’s November article I explained the physiological and conditional factors that cause autumnal color change. In that article I briefly listed both native and naturalized tree species that produce noteworthy color. The lists from that article are reproduced below and the focus of this month’s article will be a brief exposition on the various native and naturalized maple varieties.

NATIVE SPECIESSpanish Red Oak (multi), Cedar Elm (yellow), Blackjack Oak (red/

purple), Bigtooth Maple (multi), Chalk Maple (scarlet), Trident Maple (yellow), Escarpment Black Cherry, (yellow), Bigleaf & Littleleaf

Walnut (yellow), Texas Ash (yellow then scarlet then purple!), Flameleaf Sumac (multi)

NATURALIZED SPECIESGinko (yellow), Shantung Maple (multi), Caddo Maple (multi), Mexican Sugar Maple (multi), Silver Maple (multi), Drummond Red Maple (scarlet), Amur Maple (multi), Trident Maple (multi),

Chinese Pistache (multi), Shumard Red Oak (scarlet)The most well known of all maples in the hill country is the

BigTooth Maple, erroneously thought to be located only in the Lost Maples State Park. They are interspersed in many Hill Country counties with large populations in Kendall County (especially Tapatio Springs area). They have a moderate growth rate and boast multiple colors in the fall once they grow out of juvenile state (i.e. 10-15 years). There are very closely related species to the BigTooth – namely the Caddo and the Mexican

Hill Country Autumn ColorSugar Maple which both have almost double the growth rate, reach color age quicker, and manage both caliche and drought situations better that their cousin the BigTooth.

The Chalk Maple is a much smaller multi-trunk maple that is actually found in the northern Austin area but is generally associated with the East Texas region. It is quite probably the best fall color producer. This tree is number one on my list of maples to push for heavy planting throughout the Hill Country. The Trident Maple is also native to the East Texas area but I’ve come across numerous specimens growing well in our area.

The Amur and Silver Maples are the least adapted of the maple species but with moderate amounts of routine micronutrient supplements chlorosis can be avoided and they can both do well here and add diversity and uniqueness to our landscapes.

With all these native and/or naturalized trees – consumer pressure for nurseries to propagate these species from highly successful specimens in the local area can increase the vitality, vigor, and longevity of these species. I find it very unfortunate that many of these species are hard to find or labeled as incompatible because so many large nurseries do not make quality and attrition rate a priority. The smaller growers such as Madrone Nursery, Medina Nursery, Natives of Texas, Green Cloud Nursery and others know this and are committed to the plant quality and diversity that our green industry desperately needs.

BOERNE HANDMADE

MARKETIS NOVEMBER 7, 2015

Local artisans are busy painting, sewing, crafting, and creating as they prepare for the upcoming Boerne Handmade Market on November 7, 2015. This fall marks the sixth market that organizer Alyssa Mantooth has put on and the third market that organizer Beth Legge has put on. Organizers say that they started the market in October 2012 because they knew that several of their friends were making beautiful and unique products but did not have a good way to sell them locally. They wanted to provide a platform for the community to shop for trendy and unique products. The idea for a handmade market was born. The first market only had 11 vendors. This fall registration was cut off on September 1, with 47 vendors registered. Registered vendors bring all kinds of products such as: painted wooden signs, stationary, local honey and goat milk soap, jewelry, woodwork, spices and rubs, home decor, children's accessories, and tons of unique gift ideas for the holidays! Many of the vendors have now grown to sell online in their own Etsy shops and at handmade markets around the state.

One exciting addition this fall is that the market will have a Kids Market sections that will feature children ages 6-14 selling their own handmade items in booths that they have paid for. The Kids Market booth fees are significantly lower than the "adult" booths at Boerne Handmade, but allow the children to learn about business and becoming entrepreneurs. Alyssa and Beth hope to instill a love for the arts in children by making Boerne Handmade Market not only accessible and enjoyable to children, but also somewhere they can learn and create while being supported by their community.

The Boerne Handmade Market is from 9am - 4pm on Saturday November 7, 2015 located outdoors at The Pavilion Events center on John's Road. Multiple food trucks are parked at the event for refreshment and there is also a great playground behind the pavilion for children! For more information as well as exciting giveaways, you can find Boerne Handmade Market on Facebook and Instagram (@boernehandmademarket). More information as well as Kid Market registration can be found at http://www.boernehandmademarket.com.

When the time of year arrives when leaves begin to fall and the landscape starts to appear a bit more barren, some things become more noticeable, even though they were present all along. One such thing is epiphytes, or plants that grow harmlessly upon another plant (such as a tree), and derive moisture and nutrients from the air. The word epiphyte comes from the Greek ‘epi’ meaning ‘upon’ and ‘phyton’ meaning ‘plant.’ Epiphytes differ from parasites in that they grow on other plants for physical support and do not necessarily negatively affect their host. They are also called ‘air plants’ since they do not root in soil. In central Texas, the most common epiphytes native to our area are Ball Moss (Tillandsia recurvata) and Spanish Moss (Tillandsia usneoides).

Members of the Bromeliad or Pineapple family, neither of these plants are real mosses, but true plants with flowers and seeds. Ball Moss is a scurfy herb with narrow leaves forming small, grayish ball-like clusters on the branches of deciduous trees. In North America, it is native from Florida to southern Georgia, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, with a disjunct population in central Louisiana. Slender, pale violet flowers appear on long bracts from June to August. Ball Moss grows well in areas with low light, little airflow, and high humidity, which is why it is often found on shade trees in the South. It photosynthesizes its own food by receiving water vapor from the air, nitrogen from bacteria, and other minerals from windblown dust. Wind is also the main method of Ball Moss seed dispersal, and its plentiful seeds are armed with fine, straight hairs that cling well to wet or rough surfaces such as bark.

Generally growing upon larger trees such as Southern Live Oak and Bald Cypress, Spanish Moss forms a cascading mass of slender, scaly gray leaves. These scales help the plant absorb water

and nutrients, mostly from the minerals naturally leached from the foliage of its host tree. Its specific name ‘usenoides’ means ‘resembling Usnea’, which is also known as Beard Lichen, but this plant is not a lichen either. It grows in chain-like fashion to form hanging structures up to 20 feet in length, and bears tiny whitish-green flowers from April to June. Its primary range is the southeastern US, but is found as far north as Virginia, and it propagates both by seed and vegetatively with fragments carried by the wind to neighboring tree limbs. Spanish Moss has been used for various purposes, including building insulation, packing material, and mattress stuffing. It is still in use today for arts and crafts, and even in the manufacture of evaporative or swamp coolers. These coolers contain thick pads of Spanish Moss that are pumped with water, with the cooling effect of evaporation caused by a fan that pulls air through the pad and into the building.

There is a common misconception that these epiphytes are parasites, and that they harm the trees that serve as their hosts. While trees that are heavily infested with these plants can have increased wind resistance and result in fallen limbs, there is little evidence among the botanist community that a reasonable presence of these plants have a noticeable effect on the growth or health of the tree. In fact, the presence of these air plants serves as a benefit to many forms of wildlife by harboring small insects that provide food, supplying nesting material, and serving as shelter from the outside elements.

Clothes moths can cause considerable damage to materials containing wool, fur or other animal-derived products. There are two common clothes moths, case making clothes moths and webbing clothes moths. The names describe the larval (caterpillar) stage of the moth. Case-making clothes moths spin silken cases that they drag along with them while they feed. Webbing clothes moths feed within silken burrows that they spin over the surface of fabric.

Adults are small, tan moths about 3/8 an inch long. They are weak fliers and avoid light. Larvae like to feed in protected areas, such as folded clothing, and rarely leave their food source.

To reduce or avoid clothes moth problems, the following tips may be helpful:

Locate & remove any infested itemsLook in drawers & closets; on the floor; on or under furniture; on

or in walls, ceilings & atticsLaunder or dry clean clothingPeriodically shake & air out items such as rugs & clothingUse heat and/ or cold to kill insects in infested itemsThoroughly clean storage areasStore clothing in tightly sealed containersCedar is not that effective in repelling clothes mothsCedar must be freshly cut or chipped for vapors to be effective &

vapors lose potency quicklyMothballs (naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene) can be used to

repel insectsRead & follow all label instructionsUse only in sealed areas or closed containersNote that the fumes from these products may soften or melt some

plasticsInsecticide sprays can be used to supplement sanitation techniquesRemove all items from the area before treating with an insecticideAllow area to completely dry before returning itemsFor more information or help with identification, contact Wizzie
