THE DIGITAL BANKING CLUB POWER 50 Retail Banker International

Back in February, I extended to readers and members of The Digital Banking Club the question - ‘Just who are the most important people in European digital financial services today.’

The level of response was gratifying and resulted in a pow-erful who’s who of European digital financial services of almost 200 names. A reminder of the criteria for inclusion:

• The most influential thought leaders within European finan-cial services providers, including regulators, consultants, ana-lysts, innovators and influencers,

• I was not looking for nominations for individuals working for payments providers (unless their work was part of a broader digital financial services offering), digital and/or mobile plat-form providers and back office technology suppliers.

The exercise just to cut down the near 200 names to a mere 50 was time consuming but rather good fun. First thoughts: the project has highlightedsome of the most prominent names in the industry; fig-ures such as Anne Boden, who played a major part in the turnaround at AIB and drove forward that bank’s innovative digital strategy as well as Cristina de Villeneuve, the global head of BNP Paribas’ Hello Bank, the first 100% digital mobile bank in Europe. Although no ranking has been imposed beyond qualifying for inclusion in the top 50 - the names listed within the Power 50 are shown in alphabetical order.

The nominations process also served to flag up a number of region-al differences in the adoption of a more digital approach. Nomi-nations aplenty came in from such countries as Spain, Turkey, the Netherlands and Scandinavia. France was also a popular source for nominations; and representing Germany is Matthias Kröner, the founder and CEO of Fidor Bank.

Lastly, the nominations process highlighted that within Europe’s most innovative digital banks, strong arguments were advanced to include multiple nominations. So we have included Barclays’ Derek White, Shadman Zafar and Darren Founlds; at la Caixa, any such ranking has to include both David Urbano and BenjamiPuigdevall.

As everyone loves to spot the stars of the future, in addition to The European Digital Financial Services Power 50 there is a list of 5 Ris-

ing Stars, those digital financial services players under 40, who are changing the way their financial services firms do business.

It would be no surprise to see all of our Rising Stars, including names such as RBS’ Terry Cordeiro and Akbank’s Ahmet ErtanAl-gan feature prominently in a future Power 50, given the outstanding work they are doing. I want to take this opportunity to thank sub-scribers to our consumer finance titles – Retail Banker International, Cards International and Electronic Payments International – and to members of The Digital Banking Club, for taking time to sumbit their nominations. This list of 50 and the Rising Stars showcase just how varied and exciting the world of digital has become.

I chaired a panel of judges (see page S2) and I want to thank each of them for their time, patience, good humour and expert guidance throughout the judging process: Jerry Mulle; Ian Sayers; Richard Cooper; Roy Vella, and Daniel Mayo. I would also like to take time to thank the founders of The Digital Banking Club, Intelligent Environments – the international provider of innovative mobile and online solutions for financial services organisations – for taking the initiative to propose the launch of The European Digital Financial Services Power 50.

Given the level of interest in this, the inaugural Power 50 for European Digital Financial Services, I hope that this will become an annual exercise. In the meantime, as power lists often start more arguments than they settle, let the debate continue.

If I have been guilty of some egregious oversight and overlooked an obvious name in this year’s list do tell me. Lastly, eagle-eyed read-ers will note that Ian Sayers, one of the judges, also features in the listing. I ought to make clear that he did not vote for himself…
