The Digestive System

5th grade Health Class
Experiment previously done by the teacher:The teacher will demonstrate the absorption process with the following activity:
A. Using a coffee filter, form a funnel shape. Place the funnel in a glass.
B. Using a second place, mix together the following solution-1/4 glass of water, one tsp. sugar, one tsp. Cocoa. Stir together with a spoon until they are thoroughly mixed
C. Pour the mixture into the glass with the coffee filter. Be sure to hold the filter in place with your fingers.
D. Watch the mixture drop through the bottom of the glass.
The result that the students should see is that the filter holds back the particles of cocoa . Only the liquid can pass through the coffee filter. Explain that the same function that occurs in the intestines.(Instructor WEB, (2002-2005)

1. Identify features of the human body, focusing on the digestive system.
2. Explore the needs of the human body by explaining the importance of good health on relationship to the human body.
3. Understand the functions and care of the body and its organs
Long Range Objective:The student will develop an understanding of living things.

Students will work in groups. Four centers have been setup for the groups. They have been assigned to a centerand will eventually rotate to all four centers.
Students have been assigned duties such as makingcopies or printing copies, passing out scissors and crayons, and other needed items.
