Over the last few weeks, students from the Exploring Interpretation as a Career class have visited the
three middle schools and met with more than eighty students to talk with them about the importance
and value of maintaining their heritage languages as they build English proficiency. The students
explained the cognitive, professional, personal and global benefits of multilingualism while providing
stories of their own experiences as multilingual students. They explained how to pursue and be ready
for the district's new Seal of Biliteracy Award as high school students. To help students do this, the
class will be donating sets of high-interest translated and international books to the schools' libraries.
Here, Junior Chris Kombo, formerly of Brazzaville, Congo, speaks. Chris' middle school teacher
Redemptus Malyata (leaning against the wall) reminded Chris and the students that when Chris
arrived at King, all he new how to say was "Hello"--now he is in Honors and AP classes!
Stacy Nightingale's geometry class studied and created mandalas as a way to explore concepts
in both meditation aids and geometry!

Elizabeth Cockrell's ELL 3 class gathered before reading excerpts from their personal narratives
at the Telling Room, Wednesday May 30. Thank you to all the Telling Room volunteers who
came to Deering to support these students as they toiled away on their writing!

**Important Immunization Changes for Adolescents**
The following changes are effective for the 2018-2019 school year for all students attending a public or
private school in the State of Maine:
* One dose of meningococcal vaccine MCV4 (serogroups A, C, W, and Y) is required for all students
entering 7th grade.
* Two doses of meningococcal vaccine MCV4 are required for students entering 12th grade, with a
minimum interval of 8 weeks between dose one and dose two. If the first dose of meningococcal
vaccine was administered on or after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required.
We are providing you with this information now so that you have ample time to schedule an
appointment prior to the first day of the 2018-2019 school year.

● 4-H Teen Teaching is a paid summer internship for teens ages 14-19 which will give students 21st Century Skills for the future. The internship is only a few hours per week during July and August so students can combine this awesome opportunity with another summer job or internship. For those teens selected for this 8-week program, they will teach a science lesson to kids in 3rd-6th grade at least once a week. They will receive training (must be available for the training June 26-28) on how to teach others and the subject matter. The theme for this year is "Be an Engineer – Make It Work." Deadline to apply is June 1st.
● The University of New England will be hosting its first annual Health Careers Explorations
Summer Camp from August 4-6th on their Portland & Biddeford campuses. The goal of this overnight camp is to provide an opportunity for high school students from rural or underserved communities to explore various careers in healthcare. Applications are accepted from students throughout the US who will be entering 10th - 12th grade. Students from rural and underserved communities, and those who have more limited access to such opportunities will be given priority consideration. There is NO cost for this program and it is expected to fill quickly. Students should look for applications on the bulletin board outside of room 303. See Mrs. Shibles with any questions. All application materials must be received by June 15th.
● USM, in collaboration with SIEMENS Industry, is hosting an Energy Engineering Institute
for students in grades 7 - 12 on their Gorham Campus, July 10th-15th. “Guided by a curriculum grounded in STEM & Sustainability, the institute is designed to encourage youth consideration of STEM fields and foster their STEM education.” Cost: $900 Residential Tuition or $600 Day Camp Tuition.
● UNH is hosting several summer Tech Camp programs on their Durham, NH campus.
They offer partial and full scholarships to those in need of financial assistance. FREE SAT Prep with LET’S GET READY
Monday and Wednesday June 18 - Aug 13 4:00 - 7:00 at the Portland Public Library This program works. Dozens of Deering, Portland High and Casco Bay students have participated in past
semesters and seen their SAT scores increase by as much as 150 points. This is significant and could give
you more options for college and better financial aid. The target audience is low-income students and
those whose parents did not attend college, but it is open to everyone. To learn more and apply, go to
http://letsgetready.org/signup/ Choose Maine and click on Portland.
Sgt. Joel A. House Summer Camp Fund Established in 2008 in memory of a Maine soldier who was killed in Iraq, this scholarship helps about
100 Maine school-aged students attend an academic, sports, visual/performing arts, conservation, or
Bible camp of their choice with scholarships between $50 to $350.
To apply, students fill out the online application at http://sgtjoelhouse.com including tuition cost and
an essay/reflection entitled "Freedom Isn't Free". While this isn't an essay contest, bigger scholarships
are given to the essays that show the topic has been given real thought. Also, if there are special
circumstances about the student or his/her family (foster care, medical bills, immigrant, parent lost job
recently, etc.) it is helpful for them to know, as well.
Adventures in Healthcare (formerly known as Camp Survivor) is a residential program that
provides high school students (those entering 9, 10, 11 or 12th grade) with the opportunity to explore
the wide variety of healthcare careers through hands-on activities and challenges. Campers actually
practice casting, suturing (on bananas), and spine immobilization. They take x-rays and often have the
opportunity to use the laparoscopic robots in the EMMC operating room. 4 days of fun, excitement, and
once-in-a-lifetime experiences. http://www.emcc.edu/student-life/life-at-emcc/summer-camps/. The
cost of the program is $300 and scholarship opportunities are available.
College of the Atlantic is presenting a two-week residential summer session, The Wonder of Acadia , based in Acadia National Park. $500 discount for Maine High School students. For more

FAME (the Financial Authority of Maine) lists many scholarship and financial aid resources on
their website ( famemaine.com). Look through the Maine Scholarships list and have your student apply
to several. This is the best site we have found for advice on paying for college. MES is another
scholarship resource, as in the Maine Community Foundation . FAME is offering "Financial Aid & College Financing" sessions for your students and families As you know, the financial aid process can cause families stress and anxiety. Spring is the perfect time for families to attend a financial aid informational session. Having this information as early as possible can help your families feel less overwhelmed and give them time to prepare. In-person Financial Aid and College Financing sessions will continue through May and June at high schools throughout Maine. A list of events can be found here . FAME is offering an online Financial Aid and College Financing session on June 5.
