The Deering Weekly Update
On Friday, May 3 Deering celebrated its Annual Culture Day! Students participate in activities that represent the many cultures at Deering, eat delicious international food, dance, and strut their stuff! And we are ALL ONE SCHOOL! (Thank you to Ms Helen Bright for organizing this year's event).

Principal's Corner
Dear Deering Community, This past weekend Deering’s great theater director, Ms. Kathleen Harris, and our dedicated students put on the spring play, Exhibit This! Which was yet another reason to appreciate the community that Deering is committed to creating and sustaining. It was a fun, entertaining show. You could feel the great energy and excitement from our students onstage and the audience was so supportive and positive. Similarly, last Friday saw Deering students celebrating our annual International Culture Day at the high school. During the last hour of the day everyone gathered in the gym to watch student dance routines and to admire one another’s traditional garb that many had worn to school. Others dressed in Deering purple and white. Following the performances, students ate, danced, played games, and shared their heritage as part of all that makes Deering a special place. Looking to the future, to help orient new parents and students, from our rising 9th grade class, we will offer an informational meeting and some social time on Thursday, May 23rd from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm starting in our library and ending on the back deck. We’re lucky to partner with our great PTO who will help us with this event. If you have time and are interested in helping to make this an informative and fun event, please contact me ([email protected] or PTO Communications Director Jenny Wriggins ([email protected]). Finally, our prom is on Saturday, May 11th at Port City Music Hall. And on Friday, May 10th the high school will host Speak Out, an organization dedicated to help teens dialogue about safe and respectful behavior when dealing with one another in various settings, including interpersonal relationships and dating. On the eve of prom this will be a valuable chance to talk, share concerns, and think about ways to take care of one another. Which I see our students do on a regular basis. The Speak About It mission is to promote awareness of healthy sexual choices, advocate consent, and strive to prevent sexual violence through inclusive performance-based education, discussion facilitation, and provision of resources. Check out this video here!
Speak About It will be performing a school-wide skit followed by smaller break-out discussions facilitated by student leaders and educators.

DEERING HIGH SCHOOL came in 2nd place at this year's Girls Go CyberSmart Cyber Assess
competition for girls interested in cybersecurity. Participants won a $750 Amazon gift card for
the school. Congratulations to teacher Jeff Borland for encouraging and mentoring the
participants!

DISTRICT II POLICE TRAINING COUNCIL TRAINING ANNOUNCEMENT
REGIONAL ACTIVE SHOOTER TRAINING & EXERCISE
The District II Training Council will be hosting a 16 hour Regional Active Shooter Training and Exercise on May 17th and 18 th, 2019 for Police, Fire & E.M.S. personnel within Cumberland County. We are looking for student, parent, and teacher volunteers to assist with the training at Deering High School located at 370 Stevens Avenue on Saturday, May 18th. All participating volunteers are asked to report to the Deering High School gymnasium no later than 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 18th. All volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and shoes. A second set of clothes to change into is recommended for “wounded” actors. We will provide lunch but encourage you to bring snacks and water.
We anticipate that your portion of the exercise, including lunch and a debriefing, will be completed by 12:00 p.m.
Any questions that cannot be answered by the School Resource Officer, Steve Black, should be directed to Portland Police Training Sergeant Dan Hayden. Sgt Hayden can be reached at [email protected] or by phone at 874-8590.
Deering senior Samatra Sam is raising money for the Dempsey Challenge for
cancer research as her Senior Capstone. Please help her meet her fundraising goals by contributing to her GoFundMe page, here

Money raised and donated to the center allows a cancer patient to explore new abilities to kill off cancer, while providing support to families. UPDATE: At our meeting Monday April 22, Principal Gregg Palmer gave us an update, told us
about an evening welcome event for parents of 8th graders who are entering DHS this fall
(Thurs. 5/23 is the date, time TBA), and outlined some plans for next year. We’ll be sending

● A list of seniors earning their STEM Endorsement has been posted outside of room 303. Please encourage your senior to check the list for accuracy.
● Maine Robotics is hosting “Build Your Own Computer” week-long sessions for youth 12-16 years old at USM in Portland. Sessions run the week of July 8th and again the week of July 15th. Learn more about the program here.
● UNH is hosting several summer Tech Camp programs during the month of July on their Durham, NH campus. They offer partial and full scholarships to those in need of financial assistance.
● Open Bench Project is hosting several week-long programs for high school aged students. Popular offerings include their Blacksmithing program as well as their 3D Printing program where participants build their own printer to take home at the end of the week.

DHS Guidance News The Deering Guidance Counselors go into English 11 classes each semester to talk with juniors about the college process. We specifically discuss in detail the many factors colleges use in making decisions on which students get admitted Those factors include rigor of high school curriculum, grades, extra curricular activities, well-written essays,

SAT scores and more . Wendy Thompson, a local Maine college consultant will be coming to Cumberland in May to explain these similar things to greater Portland area parents and students in an engaging and enlightening presentation. We encourage Deering parents of 9th, 10th, and/or 11th graders to attend Wendy’s presentation with your child. You’ll be glad you did! See her flyer below.

The DHS Counselors welcome parents who want to join their child in the Junior Interview. Some parents want to be part of the conversation and others leave it up to their child-either way works. What is important is that your 11th grader does it before leaving Deering for the summer! Junior Meetings can be scheduled with Guidance Secretary, Gerri Adams (874-8264) because she has the calendar for Ms. Moore, Ms. Alexis, Ms Heselton, and Mr. Cherry.

$$$. Here are some reputable resources for scholarship searches: FAME (the Financial Authority of Maine) lists many scholarship and financial aid resources on their website (famemaine.com). Look through the Maine Scholarships list and have your student apply to several. This is the best site we have found for advice on paying for college. MES is another scholarship resource, as in the Maine Community Foundation. We found a good resource for scholarship information from Reviews.com. This is a website “dedicated to conducting data driven and unbiased research about topics that can help make an impact in people's lives.” Below is a link that covers the best scholarship search sites, what you should know about scholarships, and how best to apply, etc: Reviews.com scholarship search

LOCAL PORTLAND AREA AND MAINE STATE SCHOLARSHIPS
More and more Local and State Scholarships are being added all the time on your senior child’s Home Page of their Naviance Account this time of year! If
you want to see that comprehensive list, ask your child to show you their Naviance Account. The Scholarship List is on the Naviance Home Page in the
left, bottom corner of the page. (Students who may have forgotten their Username & Password for Naviance can always see Ms. Adams in Guidance to
get refreshed on that information.) The Maine Difference Scholarship The Maine Difference Scholarship, a program funded by Lamey Wellehan, is intended to aid in the cost of attaining an education for a Maine young person studying at a Maine college or university. The focus of the student’s studies should be on the Ecology and/or Economics of Maine. The award is a $1000 renewable scholarship. Application for the 2019 scholarship is due by May 30th. Cornell University’s Summer program for high school students is one of the nation's longest running and most highly regarded pre-college academic programs. It brings more than 1,500 academically talented high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors from around the world to the Cornell campus in Ithaca, New York, each summer for three- and six-week programs. This free program is sponsored by the UMaine Pulp and Paper Foundation and is a great way for High School Juniors who excel at math and science to learn more about engineering, career options, and college life. The University of Maine at Orono offers the opportunity to attend one of three sessions: July 14-17, July 21-24, or July 28-31.
