Welcome

BUSINESSL O C A L

As 2012 races past and the promise of long cold nights and short daysis just around the corner it is good that we are also coming into the funtime of year when we can enjoy Halloween and Fireworks with ourfriends and families. It is also a good time to ensure all your homemaintenance is up to date before the winter really sets in and wetweather finds the weak spots. The Deans Magazine has a wide range oflocal trades people who can help ensure that the leaky roof doesn’tbecome a raging torrent,or that the niggling noise from the radiatorsdoesn’t become a broken down boiler in the middle of winter, I’m sureyou can think of your own examples, but what ever it is do keep ourlocal traders in mind. Finally don’t forget to check out the exciting news about local authorClare Derby on page 41. Clare has appeared in The Deans Magazinebefore and we are really pleased to see her work going from strengthto strength.Keith - Editor

Artist of the month 7

Newhaven lifeboat taking the crew from the ‘Vega’ c. 1954 I was born in Sheringham on the Norfolk coast, trained at the Norwich School of Art and then moved to Londonwhere I worked as a graphic designer and illustrator for the next fifteen years. I moved back to Sheringham where I took up painting full timeMy marine and landscape paintings from this period are widelyexhibited and are in private collections worldwide. The seeds ofmy inspiration for marine and lifeboat paintings were sown inthe 1950’s on Sheringham beach around the fishermenwatching the North sea in its many moods and hearing storiesof the courage and determination of the lifeboat crews battlingagainst overwhelming odds, in the face of a North Sea gale. It isthis selfless courage that motivates me to paint these pictures. Ihave held many major exhibitions reconstructing rescues fromaround the British coastline. Everything was researched verycarefully from R.N.L.I . records. The books I have written andillustrated are Watercolours of Norfolk Past, the Wells andBlakeny Lifeboats, The Sheringham Lifeboats, The Rescues ofthe Caister Lifeboats, the Rescues of Henry Blogg and thecrews of the Cromer Lifeboats. In 1980 I moved toRottingdean and produced a book ‘Watercolours of Sussex

Past’ with verse by the great Bob Copper. I now live and workoverlooking the sea at Rottingdean. I am an admirer of thegreat marine artists W. L. Wyllie and Arthur Briscoe.

Trick or Treat ?

BUSINESSL O C A L

Halloween looms in front of us meaning the likelihood of Trick or Treaters knocking at our door. Whilst some seethis as harmless fun, for others it’s a menace and something to avoid. We may be able to put up postersdiscouraging unwanted visitors on our door step, but what about our computers?

43Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades 11

Email scams are becoming more sophisticated, andmore prolific. This week alone we have had thefollowing emails sent to us:● HMRC - informing us that we are entitled to a tax

rebate – we just need to click on the link and fill inour details for our rebate to be credited to our ac-count.

● A well known bank – someone has tried to accessour account and if we don’t follow the links in theemail and resubmit our details our account will belocked and we won’t be able to access our money.

● American Airlines – there have been alterations toour bookings and we need to click here to ensurewe don’t lose our tickets.

● Facebook – as we haven’t logged in for a while ac-cess to our account is being suspended unless weresend our log in details.

Of course, if you don’t pay tax you are unlikely to befooled by an HMRC email; if you don’t have an accountwith that particular bank you won’t worry about youraccount being inaccessible; if you’ve never booked aflight in your life you won’t worry about losing tickets, etc. But if you do happen to have dealings with the companythe scammers are pretending to be, these emails canlook very genuine. As they become more sophisticated itbecomes more difficult to spot them. If you have anydoubts do not click on links or attachments! For anyfurther advice, please don’t hesitate to give us a call –we’d rather you were safe than scammed.

The mill was used to grind local corn into flour for villagebakers. In 1877 the miller was George Nicholls. His young sonHarry went around the village each day delivering hot rollsbefore going to school.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones’ wife Georgiana records seeing the millworking in 1880. However, by the end of that century, the onlyuse of the miller’s home was as a changing room for thecricketers who played on Beacon Hill until the First World War.

The mill’s disrepair resulted in many efforts by landowners andvillagers to preserve it. The machinery was removed and aninternal steel framework fitted to hold the structure together. In 2001 a £40,000 Heritage Lottery Grant enabled the sails, or“sweeps” as they are known, to be restored. The currentTrustees of the mill are The Rottingdean Preservation Society.

The mill has been known internationally since the artist SirWilliam Nicholson produced a woodcut of the mill. This wasused as the emblem or colophon for Heinemann publishers andhas appeared on the spine of their books since 1897.

The mill is open on the 3 Sunday of each month, from May toSeptember.

Local History - Part 8Rottingdean Windmill

The windmill on Beacon Hill is a familiar landmark between Roedean and Rottingdean. The original Rottingdean mill was erectedsouth of Bazehill Road in the 18 century. The present windmill dates from 1802 and was built for Thomas Beard, a member of anold Rottingdean family. It is a grade 2 listed smock mill. A smock mill is traditionally a weather-boarded mill with six or eightsloping sides and a revolving cap which allows the sails to take advantage of the wind. They were given this name because of theirresemblance to a farmer’s smock.

Lido Nights entertainment 35

Forthcoming LidoNights EventsAutumn and winter has some fantastic entertainment lined up by Lido Nights. As usual all events take place atSaltdean Community Centre and with a lot of the worrying building issues now out of the way we plan to end theyear with a bang!

Saturday 20th October sees the return of the everpopular country rock band The Diablos. They have had afantastic year with two number 1s on the British CountryMusic Chart, plus they had two nominations for BestAlbum and Best Original Song at this years BritishCountry Music Awards. Even if you’re not a countrymusic fan, don’t miss this great band! Tickets availableon the night at £2.50.

Saturday 3rd November sees the grand final of Lido’s GotTalent. This is an under 18s competition and is afundraising event for Children in Need. Judging by thestandard of the auditions this will be a great show put onby the cream of our young local talent. Please try andsupport this event as everyone has given their time forfree including the Community Centre who have wavedall room hire charges. Keep your eyes open for acelebrity judge or two plus the Mayor of Brightonpresenting the prizes!

Our end of year spectacular is an incredible Rat PackNight starring none other than Frank Sinatra, DeanMartin and Marilyn Monroe. They are backed by aterrific 11 piece band including close harmony singersThe Doo Wop Dolls. These are probably the best tribute

artists in this genre around , in fact Neil Gordon (Sinatra)has just finished a stint playing ‘old blue eyes’ in thetouring production of the West End show The Rat Pack-Live from Las Vegas. The show is on for two nights –Friday 30th November & Saturday 1st December andtickets will sell out fast.
