Welcome

BUSINESSL O C A L

When ever school holiday’s come up I’m sure other parents willbe groaning over the fact that not only does school stop, butalso most of those other activities which you can get your childinvolved in to keep them busy. I can offer one option: sportsclubs never seem to stop, our son is a member of Lewes Athleticrunning club and they keep him (and us) busy all year round! Inthis edition we also have an enterprising young man with anexcellent idea for helping parents and children during schoolholidays - see Elliot Corner’s article on page 31 for more on this. A quick reminder that we will need articles, ads and othersubmissions in plenty of time for the December edition - it isalways a busy one so don’t get left behind!

Rose Macfarlane of Adams & Remers

As the leaves turn gold and red and the first frost approaches, mindsoften turn to fireworks, bonfire nights, Christmas preparations, officeparties and family gatherings. Niggling in the back of one’s mind, though rarely taking centre stage until after all the fun’s been had,is the thought that it’s also not so long before we see ads on the tellywith the familiar Moira Stuart reminding us of our tax returns.

For those blessed with just PAYE employment, this particularly headache is most likelyunknown, but not for all.

Take our new friends Sally and Tom – Iintroduced them in my last article in TheDeans. Tom falls into that PAYE category. Hissavings and the few dividends he gets from acouple of shareholdings are all taxed at source,so it’s an easy January for him.

Sally has her own business, and as soleproprietor she knows all too well that she needsto make sure she has her paperwork togetherready to tackle that self-assessment form. Each year she is finding it harder to deal withthe intricacies and has recently taken advice. She is also planning to start a new internetbusiness with her close friend, another localMum, and their projections are very exciting. If things go as well as they hope, her incomewill rise substantially over the next few years.

You may remember Sally has a small flat fromher student days, which she lets out. It’sworked out well the last few years, since she’sbeen married with children, as this providedher with some personal income before she setup the shop. However, if the internet businesstakes off, she will be paying high rate tax.

It may therefore be sensible for Sally to thinkabout whether it would be better to transferthe income from the flat between herself andTom, or even for Katie’s benefit – Tom’steenage daughter who’s in her last year ofschool and hoping to go to Uni. Sally coulddecide to transfer as little as 1% of theproperty to Katie, whilst passing to her all theincome – which will definitely help with herstudent costs. The rent Katie received from

the flat would then be taxed at her lower rate, after her personal allowance, rather than atSally’s high rate.

Once Uni is over for Katie, Sally could thendirect the income elsewhere if she chose to.In the meantime, this arrangement has madethe best use of the flat for the benefit of thewhole family…. truly flexible planning for thefamily’s needs.

Tom’s Mum & Dad, who live nearby, arefortunate enough to have a few differentpensions from their jobs over the years. They’ve been finding it very difficult to getclarity from HMRC recently about the taxationof these different pensions. This is a generalproblem that many individuals and coupleshave faced, but some assistance from theirpersonal tax adviser has sorted things out andnow they know exactly what income they haveand what tax is due. The stress and worry hasbeen lifted.

Maximising the tax reliefs and allowances thateach individual may enjoy with joined-upthinking about one’s whole family can reallymake a difference. Good advice is alwaysessential, and it’s worth seeking it out fromthose who have tax and estate planningexpertise, with property and business legalexperience to boot.

Computer Tips & Advice 38

Don’t Risk IT!

BUSINESSL O C A L

For many people at the moment money is an issue, and we are all trying to “tighten our belts”. At the same timetechnology, and in particular computers, are becoming an integral and necessary part of our lives. So is this an areawhere we can cut costs?

43Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades 11

There was a very sad story that caught our attention lastmonth: a teenager decided to strip down his old familycomputer that was deemed irreparable for theindividual components within. He had unplugged itbefore taking the machine apart. The naturalassumption for most people is that, as it is unplugged, itmust be safe. And maybe that is what this teenagerthought.

Tragically, he was electrocuted, and he died.

The 16 year old in question had tried to access thepower supply unit - but unplugging the computerdoesn’t mean the power has dissipated. We wouldNEVER recommend that you try and access the innerworkings of your computer – or your laptop, or anyother device that you plug in, even if you feel sure that

you have turned everything off and disconnected thepower.

The standing jokes within IT are “switch it off and thenswitch it on again” and “are you sure you’ve plugged itin?” but in reality electricity is no laughing matter.Business owners have a duty of care, both their staff andto any members of the public who are on their premises,to make sure that their electrical equipment is safe; butfor Joe Public it is more just a case of erring on the sideof caution.

If you have ANY safety concerns with your computerthen please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us foradvice. In the meantime we wish you, as always, continued happy and safe computing.

Christmas Parties &Company Events

31First & Foremost Entertainment 27

Let Them Entertain You - Part 3

Whether you have been charged with organising a Christmas bash for your business and its employees, or a festive gatheringfor family and friends, there’s still time to get things organised. Saltdean based entertainment agency First & Foremost Enter-tainment Ltd has already helped many local businesses and private clients alike as Christmas celebrations and the office partyseason draws ever closer - but even now, it’s still not too late for you to put together a great Festive Celebration of your own.

So what types of entertainment are most popular as Christmasfare, and what tips are there for creating a successful event?

There is a vast amount of choice available for Christmas enter-tainment, but traditionally there are certain elements that fitthe bill perfectly, which we are asked for time and time again. These range from Discos, Pianists, Swing Singers, Magicians andBands, through to Tribute Acts, Harpists, Firework Displays andCaricaturists.

Some performers and artists often have what is referred to as a“Christmas Set”, which means that some of their act, if bookedfor a Christmas party, will have a festive theme. For example, discos will play seasonal “floor fillers” and well loved Christmassongs, pianists can switch from background music to party sing-a-long and carols as the evening progresses, and magicians asyou would expect, always have something special up theirsleeves!

Regardless of the type of entertainment however, the one thingthat everyone is looking for these days is quality and of course, good value for money.

One way to judge the intrinsic value of entertainment is to di-vide the artist’s fee by the number of guests attending and thenby the amount of time per hour that everyone will be enter-tained. The other way of course is simply to see the enjoymenton your guest’s faces!

Rather than dividing your party budget rigidly, try dividing it inorder of priority, remembering that without music or entertain-ment a party is just a group of people in the same room!

Finally, if you are holding a ticketed charity / fund raising Christ-mas dinner or party, having professional entertainment is likelyto attract more interest, allows you the ability to charge moreper head, and in doing so, increases the percentage going tothe good cause.

3131Local musician - Elliot Corner

Now I find myself aged 18, with a publishing contract and innegotiations with a classical record label for my compositions, whilst applying to study Viola and Composition at the RoyalCollege of Music and playing both solo and in ensembles in andaround Sussex and London. Back when I was 6, I don’t think Icould envisage myself doing this today. I played because Ienjoyed it, and I wanted to be better. This is still the case.

Music is one of those things that has been proven to have abeneficial effect on learning. In studies, It has been shown toeven increase IQ by up to seven points in both children andadults. An hour a week in a 65 year old visibly changed thebrain structure. Learning to play an instrument improves theskills of self-discipline, attentiveness and planning.

Many students are given the opportunity to learn aninstrument in the state education system, an utterly fantasticidea! I have always found not having lessons in the holidaysdifficult, so I decided to offer ‘top-up’ one-off lessons in theholiday periods (Half terms, Christmas, Easter and SummerHolidays) to help keep students focused and interested. It isgood practice for me teaching in the future, and a good way tosave up some money for University!

But these big sounding things on my ‘CV’ all grow from thesmallest of seeds. I wanted to go into the fiercely competitiveworld of Classical music since I was 13. An inquisitive child isgoing to investigate their potential, no matter how bad or goodthey end up at being at something. Classical music will alwayspersist, as it is completely timeless.'

I remember the days when I was first starting to learn music - I was 6 years old at Saltdean Primary School, learning the Violin in astate-funded class of 8. I had been allowed to start playing 3 years earlier than usual, because my teacher noticed my knack forsinging perfectly in tune. Eventually I was asked to leave and ‘go private’ because I was too much of a disruption, as I was alreadyplaying notes with the bow while everyone else was only plucking!

St Nicholas Church Hall 41

Not just any oldchurch hall!

St Nicholas Parish Church Hall in Saltdean Vale has been having a face-lift over the summer. Not only is it newly-decorated andrenovated, it can also boast one of the biggest stages in the area. This was part of a ten-year renovation project that has kept localbusinesses busy over that period. This summer the stage lights were re-established, after a nineyear absence. This attracted the interest of a professionaltheatre company and, in the summer, there were twoperformances of the popular play ‘Blood Brothers’ which woncritical acclaim. The sound system has also been upgraded andnow the venue is able to host live music events, as well as theusual quiz nights and parties. The venue has become popular for wedding receptions, danceclasses and the local ballet school; and has, for many years, been the permanent venue for Saltdean pre-school.One of the hall committee members said: ‘This is one of thebest-kept secrets around here: few people realise how lovelythe hall is now. People who come to see a film at CinemaSaltdean, end up hiring the hall for their own events.’The hall is the home of Cinema Saltdean, something that hasbecome a firm favourite in the community: it shows the latestfilms, at a budget price and without the hassle of going in to

Brighton or the Marina. The friendly team of volunteers alsoserve refreshments during the interval.

Bookings for the hall have soared since the refurbishment, which continues on in to 2013. ‘We benefit from everythingbeing on one level here’, said a committee member. ‘We alsohave a fully-equipped kitchen, with convenient serving hatchesto the main hall: it’s all very well designed, really. I’m lookingforward to our Barn Dance, with a live band, on 3 November:it’s a chance to use all of the new equipment and lighting.’

Unusually, there is a gap in the bookings diary at the moment. The Wednesday at 5:00pm slot is free for a two-hour-plusbooking but the committee imagines that this will not beavailable for long. Normal hire fee is just £15 per hour.

If you are interested in booking the hall for your business, theatre or social events, please call the bookings secretary on301558 to check availability.

SECURE ALL DOORSMAKE YOUR HOME YOUR CASTLE!If your front and back doors are not secure, neither is your home.

·Make sure the doors and frames are strong and in goodcondition. Doors should be at least 44mm thick.·Fit front and back doors with five-lever mortise deadlocks- and make sure you use them!

·You could even fit bolts to the top and bottom of all out-side doors. Remember to fit all security devices with strongscrews or bolts.·Patio doors should have special locks fitted to the top andbottom unless they already have a multi locking system.Get specialist advice before fitting locks to patio doors.·If you're thinking of buying UVPC or metal framed windowsor doors, make sure that they come with good built-in locksand a fitted chain.·Before fitting locks to UPVC doors, check with the installerto make sure this will not affect your warranty.

For extra protection you could consider installing the follow-ing:DOOR VIEWER - Look through this to identify callers beforeyou open the door.LETTERBOXES - Never hang a spare key inside the letterbox. This is an obvious place that a thief will check. Consider fitting

a letterbox cage which prevents thieves from putting theirhands through the letterbox and trying the latches from theinside.CHAINS - These help you to speak to strangers at the doorwithout letting them in. Remember, if in doubt, keep themout. Buy a chain and use it every time you open the door.AUTOMATIC DEADLOCK -This locks automatically when thedoor is closed.MORTISE DEADLOCK - Fit a five lever mortise deadlock about athird of the way up the door. Most insurance companies arehappy with one Kitemarked to at least BS3621. (new updated2012 kitemark TS 007) You can only open a deadlock with akey, so a thief can't smash the nearby glass panel to open thedoor from the inside. If a thief gets into your home through awindow, they can't carry your belongings out through thedoor.

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:AVOIDING WINTERCOLDS AND FLU

BUSINESSL O C A L

We all seem to be more susceptible to colds and flu in the winter months, yet if our immune systems are working well we shouldbe able to fight the bugs and avoid being ill or at least limit the length and intensity the bug has on us. Both are viral infections soare not treatable with antibiotics.

Research has suggested that several natural remedies can helpthe immune system fight viral infections. Many of these anti-viral substances also have anti-cancer and anti-inflammatoryproperties.

VITAMINS AND MINERALS● Vitamin B3 (Nicotinamide), B6 (P5P), B12 (Cobalamin), C

and flavinoids in citrus fruits● Vitamin D has a role in regulating the immune system● Selenium A mixture of amino acids lysine, proline and N-

acetyl-cysteine, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), selenium miner-al and green tea extract was shown to inhibit influenza.

● A mixture of Vitamin A and beta carotene, some B's (par-ticularly B12), E with minerals magnesium, selenium andzinc was as effective as pharmaceutical anti-viral drugsagainst bird flu

● A mixture of coenzyme Q10, selenium and amino acid me-thionine helped recurrent viral infections

HERBSSince May 2011 herbal medicines are strictly regulated in UK.Many remedies manufactured before that date are still availa-ble. Only about 80 products are licensed for use in UK and someare available as foods.● Astragalus, capryllic acid, Chinese herbs (many varieties),

cordyceps militaris (mushroom variety), curcumin (tumer-ic), dandelion extract, echinacea, gardenia, licorice root(avoid in raised blood pressure)

WHAT TO DO?● Get outside in the fresh air and expose yourself to winter

sunshine when you can● Take regular gentle exercise● Manage stress as it impacts negatively on the immune sys-

tem● Include anti-viral food in your diet:

● brazil nuts for selenium● citrus fruits for vitamin C, nutrients are richest if

picked when ripe● carrots for beta carotene● fruit and vegetables for zinc, though our soil is

quite depleted● garlic and onions, ginger, tumeric (commonly

used in curries)● green tea● spirulina has a unique blend of nutrients that no

single source can offer, including B vitamins, min-erals, proteins, gamma-linolenic acid and the su-per anti-oxidants such as beta-carotene, vitaminE, trace elements and a number of unexploredbioactive compounds.

● whole grains, including brown rice for B vitamins, meat or marmite for B12

● Remedies that you many need in addition to agood diet

● Vitamin C in small regular doses or time release,D, selenium, zinc

We are happy to advise you on your health matters.
