From the Prez
This Friday’s meeting starts at
6PM (not our usual 7pm time) as extra time is needed for our Friday evening mini show. The potluck will take place from 6 to 6:30 with the Mini Show to follow.
The Mini Show is an opportunity for new members to learn about the process of showing dahlias, understand the various forms, and practice staging blooms. You will get help from experienced show participants. Bring your best blooms and remember to cut them to include a set of leaves. If you have show containers bring those too. If not I will bring some extra show containers for anyone in need.
When showing blooms at a show each bloom requires a container with a pin frog at the bottom. If you are showing 5 blooms you need 5 containers. If you need to borrow more than two containers please email me ([email protected]) ahead of time.
The ADS Judging Seminar is coming up in Santa Cruz, July 20th at Simpkins Swim Center from 9am to 3pm in the Multi-purpose room where we always meet. Please let me know if you plan to attend as I need a head count for lunch. All MBDS members can attend free of charge and a complimentary lunch will be served. At Friday's meeting I will have a signup sheet. If you can’t attend Friday’s meeting and want to come to the judging seminar please email me at [email protected].
The Dahlia Dine Around is July 27th. We will be visiting the gardens of Katie and Dave, Lynn and Debbie. More on that at Friday’s meeting. On Friday we will also be reviewing volunteer opportunities for our Annual Bloom Show, August 24th and 25th at the MAH in downtown Santa Cruz. Please consider volunteering eight plus hours to help make our show successful. We are expecting a large turnout (last year we had over 3,000 attendees) and will need all hands on deck. There will be volunteer signup sheets at our meeting. If you can’t make the meeting on Friday, please email me at [email protected] and let me know how you would like to help out.
The first dahlia show of the year is August 17th and 18th at the Hall of Flowers in San Francisco. Hope to see you there. Also, if you need containers for any upcoming shows let me know. I have some loaner MBDS containers.

Minutes MONTEREY BAY DAHLIA SOCIETY Attendees ~30 Meeting Minutes – June 14, 2019
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 by President Kristine Albrecht. All were welcomed and introductions were done. President Kristine noted two calendar changes – our fabulous Dine-Around will be held on July 27th and our Judging Seminar will be at the Simpkins Center on July 20th. Other dates to remember are the San Leandro Dahlia Show September 7th and 8th, our dahlia show August 24th & 25th, and the Santa Cruz County Fair September 11-15th. Enter lots and enter often!!
Steve Hammack graciously invited us up to visit his garden the last Sunday in June to view his garden and learn about how he cultivates his garden and orchard.
At our next meeting – July 12, we will have our mini-show. Bring your blooms and the experts will show you how to stage them for upcoming shows.
Tuber RaffleOur monthly raffle was conducted for new introductions.
