NANTWICH Town Council has teamed up with the Nantwich Bookshop and Max Books to organise the inaugural Nantwich Sports Book Festival. Between May 4 and 7 a number of venues around the town are inviting prominent sports personalities and authors to discuss their latest book releases. The festival was set to kick off at Nantwich Bookshop on Wednesday May 4 at 7pm with Sherlock Holmes and The Birth of The Ashes by Arunabha Sengupta. It has a local connection as A.N. Hornby is buried at Acton Church, Nantwich. He was captain of England during the test match featured in the book. David Millar offers a unique insight into the mind of a professional cyclist during his last year before retirement on Thursday May 5 at the Crewe Vagrants Sports Club. On Friday May 6 at 7pm Tom Smith (pictured) and

some of the Lancashire team will be at The Studio. And on Saturday at 7pm Duncan Hamilton, author of For the Glory – The Story of Eric Liddell, comes to Nantwich Methodist Church, promising a story of a true hero of our times. Tickets are available from the Civic Hall or Nantwich Bookshop directly, by calling 01270 628633 or online at www.nantwichtowncouncil.gov.uk.

CHESHIRE East Council is to seek a Supreme Court ruling in a bid to protect local planning powers and prevent developers ‘riding roughshod’ over councils’ development policies. The authority is spearheading a landmark ‘leave to appeal’ to the highest court to challenge a Court of Appeal ruling which undermines the scope and force of council planning policies to shape development. The aim is to maintain the significance of Local and Neighbourhood Plans in determining applications for development even where a council cannot show it has the required five-years’ deliverable housing land supply identified. The Council’s decision follows a reversal in the Court of Appeal of Cheshire East’s

earlier court success that had overturned a planning inspector’s decision to grant developer Richborough Estates permission to build 146 houses at Moorfields, in Willaston. Councillor Ainsley Arnold said: “We have thought about this long and hard and it is not something we do lightly. “However, this court decision is too important to be allowed to go unchallenged. “It is clear to us it would have deeply detrimental implications for councils across the country and their powers to protect local communities from unplanned and unsustainable development. “We believe this action is necessary to protect local people, their communities and our beautiful Cheshire East countryside.”

NANTWICH resident Ed Andrews has been enjoying a four-day adventure with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Ed, aged 19, recently joined the Trust for an inspirational challenge, including sailing, canoeing, high ropes, cycling, archery and orienteering at the Essex Outdoors Centre in Bradwell. Ed who finished cancer treatment in 2007 for a brain tumour at Alderney Children’s Hospital, was joined by 18 other young people from around the UK, in recovery from cancer. Taking part in his seventh trip with the Trust, Ed explained what the opportunity meant to him:

”Socialising with other young people in a similar situation who are the same age as me is great because they know where you are coming from and what it is like.”

NANTWICH mayor Andrew Martin is to take part in this year’s London Marathon. Despite a busy schedule the Mayor has managed to squeeze in training for the

challenge, which is all in aid of The Anthony Nolan Trust. To support his efforts in what is his fifth marathon, visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/AndrewMartin70

OFFICERS from the Crewe Local Policing Unit are appealing for information following a robbery in Nantwich town centre. The victim, a 29-year-old local woman, left the Wilbraham Arms on Welsh Row and walked along Queens Drive at around 11.30pm on Sunday March 27. As she turned into Meanee Drive she was approached by two males who demanded money from her. After stealing cash and jewellery from the woman, one of the men then assaulted the victim before leaving the scene, heading in the direction Queens Drive. As a result of the incident the woman suffered minor injuries, although she did not require hospital treatment.

The first man is described is as white, early to mid 20’s, approximately 5 ft 10 inches tall with light brown hair that was gelled at the front. At the time of the incident he was wearing a light coloured shirt and denim jeans The second man is described as white, in his mid 20’s, approximately 5 ft 8 inches tall with short brown hair. He was wearing a dark coloured jumper. Police are appealing for any information in relation to this incident and for any witnesses that may have seen the two males described in the area. Anyone who has any information in relation to the incident is asked to contact PC Tom Vass on 101 quoting incident number 32 28/03/2016.

THE Nantwich Concert Band, led by musical director Nick Birch, will perform at the Civic Hall on Sunday June 26. The evening starts at 7pm and will be a joint concert

with the Simply Allsorts Choir from Madeley. The concert will feature a mix of popular tunes and old favourites. Tickets are £7, or £5 concessions.

THE Rotary Club of Nantwich has donated a further £1,200 to local good causes, bringing the total so far this year to almost £3,000. A cheque for £700 was donated by by club president Rod Stokes to Lisa Courtney for the Donna Louise Children’s Hospice (pictured). Lisa said: “We couldn’t provide the wonderful services for the children and their families without the support of organisations such as the Rotary Club.” Local fundraiser Steven Bebe, who suffers from Muscular Dystrophy, also received a cheque for £500. He said: “I am very thankful to the Rotary Club for their cheque, which along with many other donations, has

given me the independence that only an electric wheelchair can offer to someone with my condition. “Without such kindness, I would struggle to maintain my independence.”

THE creation of a special flag for Nantwich is being considered by the town council. The authority wants to hear peoples views on the idea and what the flag might look like. Last summer, the town council decorated the town centre with Union flags and this year decided to add to their displays, flying a limited number of flags from the Home Nations on the saints’ days. A decision to fly flags and bunting was made to further brighten up the thriving tourist town, making it even more vibrant to visitors and local residents alike. Councillor David Marren said: “I am really pleased to see the flags and bunting in the town. “As a busy town, with an ever increasing number of visitors, I feel it adds to the town’s attraction and complements the wide range of events and festivals we host. “I’ve had a number of enthusiastic conversations with complete strangers as I’ve wandered around the town centre and I’m really pleased with the display.” The Town Council is now also considering creating a flag for the town and would welcome the views of residents and businesses before we make a final decision. One argument is that a town flag could help to foster a sense of identity. A town council spokesman

said: “Flags create a symbol which members of the community can relate to and a Nantwich flag would bring the town’s diversity together under one banner, celebrating the town’s unique character and reinforcing its personality and independence. “It would cement the idea of combined responsibility in the town and give community members something to feel proud of. “We’d like to know what people think.” If there is support for the creation of a flag, the council will create a small number of designs as examples and ask for feedback before choosing a design. Alternatively it may run a competition and invite people to submit designs. The design could reflect local place names, local legends and folklore, traditional emblems and colours, local achievements and industries. Email your views to views [email protected].

NANTWICH Players are set to present their latest play The God of Carnage. Penned by Yasmina Reza, the play is a modern drama about intelligent, metropolitan parents. What happens when two sets of them meet to discuss their sons’ unruly conduct at school? A calm and rational debate about the need to teach kids how to behave properly? Or a hysterical night of name-calling, tantrums and tears? Boys will be boys, but these adults are a whole lot worse. In this play, of just four characters, the Players welcome back Anne-Marie Scragg and stalwarts, Charlie Gobbett, Sian Weedon and Jonathan Everitt.

It is directed by Simon Porter, who has directed several plays, including Art, by the same author, The Murder Room, and Bouncers, and appeared in countless productions. The play contains adult themes and strong language that provides a realistic tone to the action, as used in context. The drama runs from the May 6 to 4 at the Love Lane theatre. Tickets cost £8 and are available from the TIC in the Civic Hall, online at www.nantwichtowncouncil.gov.uk or on 01270 600727. • Pictured are Charlie Gobbett, Jonathan Everitt, Sian Weedon and Anne-Marie Scragg in rehearsal.

A TEXTILES exhibition entitled Time and Place has opened at Nantwich Museum and will run until June 18. It features the work of Breakaway Textile Group celebrating the skills and pleasure of creative textile

work. There are three contrasting themes to the eye catching exhibition, two inspired by the museum’s artefacts and local history whilst the third reflects how other artists have influenced each contributor.

A sixth-former at Brine Leas, Harrison has run heart-defect screening sessions attended by hundreds of young people, won bids for defibrilators at his school and, along with family, has campaigned to raise funds for the cause. A group of individuals including Ros Reid, John Parkin, Anne McKay and Cathie Riddell, members of St Mary’s Church snapped up the Supporting The Community Award The Outstanding Organisation Award went to both the Nantwich

Agricultural Society and Nantwich Events Photographers. The Inspiration Award was won by Chris Radford, a presenter and chairman of The Cat Community Radio. The Mayor chose to present his Recognition Award to Jeff Stubbs, familiar for his role as chairman to Nantwich Civic Society, Greenspaces South Cheshire and the Nantwich Partnership. Retiring to Nantwich after many years as a town planner, Jeff said: “I vowed never to get involved in planning again, until I came to Nantwich and fell in love with the town.” He now uses his knowledge and experience in relation to public realm improvements to townscape and works tirelessly to improve the environment and protect the town’s heritage.

AS Nantwich Town continued an unbeaten run of five games with a 4-0 win over Hyde and 1-1 draw with Mickleover, the side celebrated the success of one of its young stars. Matty Kosylo (pictured) was named as the league’s Young Player of the Year award at a special awards night in Barnsley. The winger has excited the supporters of Nantwich Town all season with his skill and flair and that has seen him contribute 14 goals to the club in all competitions this season, with a number of assists too. It has also been noticed by the managers of the 24 member clubs of the Premier Division, because it was they who voted for Kosylo as their Young Player of the Year and they also gave him a place in

the Team of the Year for the Premier Division. Kosylo wasn’t the only Dabber to be collecting an award in Barnsley as Andy White was also named in the Team of the Year. The versatile defender who has played at both right back and his favoured left back position has been virtually an ever-present in the Nantwich Town line-up this season. He has also netted twice this season scoring against Stockport County in the FA Trophy and also he got the opener in the League against Blyth Spartans at the Weaver Stadium in January. Chairman Tony Davison said: “It’s with great pleasure and pride to see Matty Kosylo win the Young Player of the Year award from the League as voted by the 24 managers. “Matty has put in a lot of

hard work this season and has delivered some memorable moments that will live long in the memories of the fans and everyone connected to Nantwich Town Football Club.

“His performances have been superb. “It’s been a fantastic season overall making the FA Trophy semi-final and it looks like we will be finishing in the top 10.”
