Here at The Current Quarterly, we are always trying to add value for our readers, as well

as those who support the magazine by advertising with us.

This past summer we launched our website TheCurrentQuarterly.com that houses our blog, as well as pictures from anyone’s Instagram feed who references #thecurrentquarterly. We also launched our Tumblr page (thecurrentquarterlyblog) with the intention of sharing fashion tips, tricks and inspirations. Additionally, we have increased our presence on Facebook (‘like’ us at facebook.com/thecurrentquarterly) in order to share our advertisers’ events, and cool local fashion news and finds.

Our goal is (as always) to make it easier for people to support local businesses that add value to Cape Cod, simply by opening their doors and adding to our community character every day.

Ever hear a fashion buzz word and wonder what the heck the stylists are talking about? Here is your guide to the trends of the season.

Neckline: TurtleneckTurtlenecks certainly aren’t new to the fashion world, but who says you can’t turn back to the classics for some inspiration this season? Ribbed, slouchy, fitted, cropped - there are countless options to choose from when it comes to

these high-necked tops. Wear a turtleneck under a dress for a peekaboo effect or even under a dramatic coat for a look that looks fresh off the runway. From philosophers to housewives, turtlenecks have been rocked throughout fashion history and this upcoming autumn, these traditional wardrobe staples are ready to be appreciated

once again.

Print: HoundstoothHoundstooth is one of those simply timeless prints that designers constantly re-visit. Seen on runways all over the globe, it is prominent this season. It has been even more prominent for this upcoming season and seen on runways all over the globe. This crisp print can look modern and edgy, or timeless and classic, it all depends on the way styled. Due to its graphic and statement-making nature, houndstooth is great to pair with

some neutral basics. It has been spotted in subtle touches like skinny belts or in

bold statement coats that are g u a r a nt e e d to turn some heads and add some flair for this

upcoming season.

Material: Chunky KnitAs we enter the chillier seasons, layering is key to keeping warm on those crisp autumn days. So embrace the sweater weather and grab some chunky knit pieces that can be anything from buildable basics to statement sweaters. Chunky knits are the cuddliest of pieces that will keep you toasty, yet fashionable! An oversized cardigan over a flirty dress plays off of the ‘Grandpa Chic’ trend and will keep you warm, but still cute. Pair a long chunky pullover with some thick leggings to be cozy and representing comfortable dressing at its best.

Hemline: Wide LegFor this fall, women all over are retiring their skinny jeans and heading into wide leg territory! Wide leg trousers are a perfect sophisticated look that carries an aura of nonchalant. The over-sized aesthetic is intriguing and effortless and will make anyone look like a Parisian fashionista. Tuck a plain white tee into these trousers to instantly appear cool and casual. If you want to take your look out to nighttime, throw on some heels and grab a dressy blazer to take on the night.

• Give your hair a break! Let it air dry and take a break from the heat for this season.• If your eyes are looking a little tired and red, apply some white or nude eyeliner to your inner corner for an instant pick-me up.• For a quick and easy highlight, use a concealer one shade lighter than your skintone on the tops of your

Tips, tricks, advice and adages for having fun with your hair and makeup

cheekbones. This will catch the light and make you glow with some added definition.• Big bold brows have been all the rage lately! So fill those babies in with a shade darker than normal to give them that trendy and statement making look.• Check your products ingredients! Do some research and get to know the products you use every day and find out what is in them. Watch out for any harmful chemicals that have found their way into your daily routine. • Is your hair looking drab and you feel as if you are running out of options? Scrounge in your purse for some bobby pins! These little handy dandy tools can also be pinned in graphic designs to innovate your look. Pair three sets of two to create a chevron shape on the side of your head. Or take three and pin them parallel to your ear to add some sharp contrast.• New season, new look; Mix it up this fall and try something new. Winged liner, berry lips, or bare faced, the options are endless and it’s all up to you!

Wardobe Want

You may be aware of the importance of creating a waist in order to accentuate curves or slim

the silhouette. The right belt – wide or skinny, black and brown - is the central wardrobe fundamental to achieving this fashion feat.

A wide belt is great for adding drama and style, as well as shape, to a dress or a tunic. If you have a fuller shape, this size belt is perfect for you, especially in a darker color.

Short and short-waisted people are best suited for skinny belts, so as not to overwhelm the figure. Skinny

belts are also ideal for adding a sophisticated and elegant feel to a pencil skirt or a pair of wide-leg trousers. Take a fashion risk and try one in a bright color.

Placement of belts is important, so try placing the belt at different points of your midsection. Experiment with wrapping the belt right below your bust, instead of the natural waist - this will lift your bust and show more waist, creating a nice long slimming line.

Whether you want to create a fashion statement or add that little extra to a plain outfit, a belt can help you achieve that.

School is in SessionIt has become a sort of Current Quarterly tradition to have

a ‘back to school’ focus in our fall issues. Last year we had

teens model in a photo shoot, and this year we tasked our

teen intern, Emma Childs, with organizing and styling her

own photo shoot. From the concept – local educators posing

at Sturgis Library in Barnstable Village – to choosing outfits

reflecting fall trends, and even getting behind the camera,

Emma handled herself with maturity, grace and most of all

style, and created a beautiful product for these pages.

Richard Avedon was an American

fashion and portrait photographer

who photographed for publications such

as Harper’s Bizarre and Vogue, as well as

subjects such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth

Taylor and Diane Keaton in the second half

of the twentieth century. Avedon created

his own style of fashion photography –

minimalist, soft light, few props, with a white

background – always trying to capture the

soul and personality of his subject. Avedon

was also known to show his models full

of emotion, smiling, laughing, and, many

times, in action which was revolutionary at

the time.

For our “Vintage Inspired” fall photo

shoot, we enlisted local photographer

Rebecca Brown to shoot our model, Sarah

Frazier, in Avedon’s style. Frazier donned

clothing from local boutiques whose designs

were inspired by vintage styles.

Style Profile

Barnstable native Shawn Vecchione has made a name for himself on Cape Cod as a surfer

and a surfboard designer, and now he is trying his hand as a clothing designer. Drawing on his experience as a professional surfer and snow boarder, as well as one of the original owners of the Boarding House Surf Shop in Hyannis, Vecchione has designed a pair of fleece-lined jeans meant to make the wearer look good and stay warm post-session while surfing through New England winters.

CQ: When did the idea (and the name) for the NorEaster Jeans come to you?

SV: The idea came to me when my partner Mike Marks and I were in his office talking about what it takes to be a winter surfer in New England. I told him my flannel-lined jeans, even though they are pretty ugly looking, are essential for checking the waves when the temps are below freezing. They are also easier to get on than pulling on long underwear when wet after just getting out of the

water. So we took it to the next level of a warmer, more flexible, stylish jean. The name came from the obvious; we wear these jeans during NorEaster season... bitter cold winter.

CQ: Some people might question a surfboard craftsman designing a pair of jeans - what would you say to those people?

SV: Yes I design surfboards, but I'm also the guy that surfs all winter long in below freezing conditions. I don't miss a swell come winter. Being an avid surfer in the winter, you need to have the right gear. These jeans are a necessity for a cold water surfer.

CQ: What makes these jeans special?

SV: What makes these jeans special is that not only are they American made and eco friendly, but they are stylish and not just a work jean. They wear well, are unrestrictive and are extremely comfortable.

CQ: Can you explain the design process for the jeans - start to finish?

SV: The design of this jean was a collaborative effort of the NESurf group. Everyone gave input on the style and look of the jean.

41

Page 44: The Current Quarterly Fall 2014

Material and production were also important to us. We chose a denim from South Carolina that has part recycled elastane to give the denim stretch, and a polar fleece that is made here in Massachusetts with around 20 recycled water bottles per jean. The jeans are sewn in LA.

CQ: Who would you consider the NorEaster customer?

SV: These jeans are designed by surfers not just for surfers. They are designed for people who want to be outdoors, warm and comfortable in the coldest climates. They are for people who care where their jeans are made and what materials are used.

CQ: Where can you find the jeans locally?

SV: You can find these jeans at Chatham Clothing Bar [in Chatham], Mass Bay Company [Hyannis], Sick Day [Wellfleet], and my shop Vec Surfboards [Orleans]. You can also find them online at NESurf.com.

CQ: How would you describe Cape Cod style?

SV: Cape Cod style has variety. It depends on what area of the Cape you go to. I feel it has a bit of a preppy vibe but is still very casual and comfortable. These jeans were made to appeal to any style.
