Dear friends,

It is such a thrill to welcome you to a brand-new season at the Croswell … the first in our newly renovated theater!

When you enter the Croswell for the first time this summer, you’ll see a lot of new things … but plenty of familiar favorites too. We’ve transformed our former Heritage Room into the brand-new Farver’s, a fun and friendly gathering place for before and after the show — and other times as well. A new studio space on the mezzanine level will host exciting events like this fall’s world premiere of Michigan playwright Terry Hissong’s The Family Digs. We’ve made several changes that will make the Croswell more accessible for all our guests, including an elevator to the mezzanine level and improved options for hearing assistance. And, of course, we’ve more than doubled our restroom space … a long-overdue improvement, I think you’ll agree!

And then there’s the theater itself. In addition to numerous behind-the-scenes changes, we’ve repainted, refinished the floor and installed new carpet … but rest assured, we did not change the historic beauty of the place we all know and love!

On top of all that, we have an incredible season planned for you. Our Grand Reopening Concert Series in May will bring many Croswell favorites back to our stage … and I know you will love the musicals in our 2017 Broadway Season. This year will be every bit as spectacular as you have come to expect from the Croswell.

As always, thank you for being part of the Croswell family. I hope to see you soon!

WHAT’S NEW AT

Farver’s: Join us before and after the show — and on non-show evenings as well — in Farver’s, the new spot for food, drinks, and conversation! Farver’s is located in what was previously called the Heritage Room. We’ll have a bar, light snacks, and entertainment on select evenings. It’s just one more reason the Croswell is the place to be!

Van Doren Studio: Located on the mezzanine level of the Croswell, our new studio theater space will host everything from casual cabaret-style entertainment to productions of brand-new plays.

A comfortable mezzanine lobby: The mezzanine lobby will provide a comfortable, welcoming space for patrons attending a show in the Studio or who are seated in the balcony for a show in the Julia Argyros Auditorium.

More accessibility: We’ve widened our doors, added an elevator from the main floor to the mezzanine level, and a wheelchair lift to get beyond the stairs in our main hall. Although the structure of our 1921 balcony makes it impossible for it to be wheelchair-accessible, the number of steps required to reach it has been reduced from twenty-seven to nine.

Improved sound and lighting: We’ve made numerous behind-the-scenes changes, including acoustic modifications to the orchestra pit, that will make our productions even more enjoyable.

More hearing assistance options: In addition to amplification devices, we now have a hearing loop system available for all seats on the orchestra level. This system will allow people with newer hearing aids to receive a radio signal directly from the sound board, eliminating the need for headphones.

More restrooms: We have more than doubled our restroom space, with restrooms on both the main floor and the mezzanine level. A family restroom is available for those who need the assistance of a family member or caregiver, changing tables for infants are available in a restrooms.

As we reopen after 12 months of renovations, we invite you to check out our incredible new spaces and offerings! Here’s a look at what you can expect from the newly updated Croswell.

Start with one father infected by a strange malady. Whisk in his freeloading, New Age aficionado son. Add a dollop of manipulative co-workers. Marinate it with the final ingredient — the world’s greatest archaeological discovery. Pour the entire mixture into a small two-bedroom apartment, turn up the heat, and what do you have? Possibly the most oddly baked comedy you’ll see on stage this year. This is the world premiere of the new play by Michigan author Terry Hissong.

Meet Me in St. Louis

Branson on the Road brings all the fun of a Branson country-western show to Adrian! Join us for a star-spangled salute to American history and heroes. The show begins with the founding of the nation and then moves musically through some of our great cities and towns with songs like “Abilene,” “Detroit City” and “Route 66.” Producer and performer Debbie Horton holds the distinction of being the only woman to have played lead guitar for the late, great Johnny Cash. Don’t miss this toe-tapping good time!

Get InvolvedVolunteering: Volunteers help the Croswell in many ways. Show night volunteers serve as door greeters, ticket takers and ushers, and also serve food and drinks at the concession stand. Others might help out in the front office or assist with promoting shows — for example, by distributing posters to local businesses as a Croswell Ambassador. Volunteers also work backstage and help with things like building sets, painting drops and hanging lights! croswell.org/volunteers

Auditions: Open auditions for Croswell productions are held throughout the year. If you’ve ever had an interest in performing, we invite you to come and try out! Upcoming audition dates are always listed on our website. croswell.org/auditions

Summer camps: Croswell summer camps are a great way to introduce young people to the performing arts! This year, camps will run July 17 – 29 for ages 6 – 17: croswell.org/summercamps

the fun doesn’t end when the curtain goes down! Stay after the show and enjoy drinks, light snacks, and conversation at Farver’s, located in the former site of the Heritage Room on the Croswell’s main floor. Farver’s will even be open when the Croswell doesn’t have a show running … adding another great destination to historic downtown Adrian!

Post-show parties in MayEach of the shows in our Grand Reopening Concert Series is followed by an opportunity to celebrate with music, conversation and more! After the May 6 concert by Under the Streetlamp, join us under the tent outside the Croswell to socialize with Shonn Wiley and friends, enjoy drinks and light hors d’oeuvres, and dance to the music of the Dan Kesterke band.

After Best of Broadway on May 14 and Jukebox Legends on May 20, join the stars of the shows for a small, exclusive reception in our new studio space! Tickets to all post-show parties in May are $25 per person.

HistoryOur HeritageFrom the day it first opened its doors — on a snowy March evening in 1866 — the Croswell Opera House has been at the center of community life in Adrian. It was a place where people came together … not just for theater, but for concerts, festivals, high school graduations, and much more. Great crusaders like Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass spoke on our stage. Legendary artists like Edwin Booth and John Philip Sousa performed here. From the end of the Civil War to the beginning of the film era, the Croswell played host to just about every kind of event imaginable. The Croswell was converted into a movie theater in 1919, but it continued to play a vital part in Adrian’s community life. Movies at the Croswell were a cherished part of many people’s childhoods. However, by 1967, the Croswell’s future was in doubt. Movie audiences were dwindling, and there was a very real risk that the building could be torn down and replaced with a parking lot. Luckily, an Adrian businessman named Charlie Hickman stepped forward to buy the theater, and a group of dedicated volunteers banded together to save this community treasure.

In Summer 2017, the Croswell marks its 50th season of producing high-quality live theater for the people of southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio.

Our PurposeWe are preserving Adrian’s cultural heritage by maintaining a building that has played a pivotal role in the community’s history, with programming that’s in line with the building’s original purpose. We take pride in staging professional-caliber productions in a comfortable community theater setting. The high quality of our productions allows us to draw patrons from around southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio.We provide a top-notch educational experience for area youth interested in the performing arts by exposing them to high standards and production values and giving them an opportunity to work with accomplished professionals in their field.

the definitive guide to the croswell’s first 150 years! The Croswell Opera House is pleased to announce the publication of Behind the Curtain: 150 Years at Michigan’s Oldest Theater. Annual fundDid you know that ticket sales only cover about 45% of the cost of keeping this beautiful theater operational? One of the ways we close the gap is with the help of many generous contributors to our Annual Fund. These are patrons who make a donation to theater to help make the extraordinary things we do in this building possible.

Corporate and foundation sponsorshipIf you are interested in learning about sponsorship opportunities for your business, foundation or other organization, we would love to speak with you! Sponsorship of a Croswell production or season is a great way to show your support for the community and build goodwill!

Planned givingYou can leave a lasting legacy by including the Croswell in your estate planning! Planned giving is a way to keep making a difference … forever. An estate gift to the Croswell doesn’t have to be large to make a difference. We can help you determine a gift that makes sense for your circumstances. No matter the amount, your gift will make a positive impact on your community and benefit future generations.
