1

What is CWMS?

2

A USACE-developed decision support systemcapable of real-time:• Data acquisition• Data visualization• Hydrological forecasting

CAVI = Control and Visualization Interface

Where has CWMS been deployed?

• Big push in 2009 as a result of ARRA.• Current push with funding coming from the

USACE Modeling, Mapping, and Consequences (MMC) center.

3

2009 CWMS deployment sites

Is CWMS available for non-USACE users?

• No, but a similar package is available: • Hydrologic Engineering Center Real-Time

Simulation Program (HEC-RTS)

The big idea…

15

Want to predict stage/flow here

ReservoirFirst need runoff hydrographs!

Forecasting workflow

17

CWMS utilizes familiar and widely used modeling software

Step 1: Meteorological forecast preprocessor (MFP)

• Need to start by specifying meteorology• Lookback period: NEXRAD data• Forecast period: User specified or NWS

quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPFs)

18

Step 2: Hydrologic modeling system (HEC-HMS)

19

• Given precipitation, compute runoff

Precipitation inputs from MFP

Flows computed by HEC-HMS

Step 3: Reservoir simulation (HEC-ResSim)• Given runoff (incl. reservoir inflows), compute

reservoir releases

Step 4: Channel simulation (HEC-RAS)

21

• Given reservoir releases, compute downstream:• Stage/flow.• Inundation.

Reservoir releases from HEC-ResSim

Intervening local flows from HEC-HMS

Stages and flows at all cross sections from HEC-ResSim

Step 4: Channel simulation (HEC-RAS)

22

Output available for all cross sections

Step 4: Channel simulation (HEC-RAS)

23

Sample inundation map

Step 5: Consequences (HEC-FIA)

24

• Given stages/inundation, compute impacts and required response

Viewing forecast results

25

In Summary, CWMS:

• Is easily adaptable• Can do as little or as much as you want it to do• Allows users to access lots of information and

data from a single interface• Improves operational decision making
